I think this may be only the second time RiffTrax has done a short that was used on MST3K (with the prior one being What About Juvenile Delinquency?). Have there been any other instances?

Although it might be slightly sacrilegious to say so I actually like this short on its own. Yes, it’s fifties goofy, but who can deny the appeal of a family that loves and cares for each other?

    The MST3K version is funnier….
Maybe they’ll riff What to Do on a Date next….

Their MST3K re-dos have generally been less funny than the original, mainly because they keep redoing classics. If they must re-riff something, perhaps they should consider a KTMA? (*cough* SST:Death Flight *cough*)

I think the issue is they try not to make the same jokes, so some of the funnier ones from MST get tossed aside in favor of lamer quips.

    oh well

Except that the Joel-era version nailed the condescending narration and, sanctimonious moralizing with their riffing: “It’s called ‘Guilt’, and BOY, does it work!”
And the accompanying host segment (“Pinch yourself hard, Mr. Robot, you deserve it!”) was icing on the cake.

I don’t mind Rifftrax redoing titles.

We’ve now seen full versions of films cut for time or content for tv, “Manos,” “Time Chasers,” and “Angels’ Revenge” and extended versions of “A Case of Spring Fever” and “Mr. B. Natural.”

IMHO the re-dos of classic MST3K episodes are usually a downgrade from the original, mainly because the best jokes were used the first time. So far the only re-do that I felt came close to being as consistently funny as the MST3K version was “Manos”.

Every repeat is a missed opportunity to riff material that we’ve never seen before, though. Material regarding which we have no pre-existing expectations based on earlier riffings. But whatever. :-)

Email or tweet Rifftrax with your film suggestions.

According to their Twitter, they are considering riffing a film called “Rad.”

I’ll leave it up to you to look it up. :-)

…Why, are they running out of ideas?

(I’ll take that as a “yes”.)

No, because some people here may have suggestions of films or shorts they would like to see riffed.

I think you might be right, because that would explain the lower quality of season 3 compared to the others.

I would add “Time Chasers” and “SCCTM” to that list. I also prefer the live re-riff of “Carnival of Souls” to the original Rifftrax. The others have been generally disappointing.

    So was “Final Justice.”

Don’t forget about the Cinematic Titanic re-riff! That movie has the record for most riffs by MST3K alums. I think I enjoyed the Rifftrax version the best.
