MST3K in “Reason”

We’re told the June issue of ‘Reason’ magazine, of all places, has an article on MST3K, Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax.

Update: It is now online.

Thanks to Jean for the tip!

  1. I know a few of Reason’s writers/editors, and it’s a hotbed of sci-fi geeks, bad-movie fans, and MiSTies — who also happen to do politics. I once wrote an article for Reason, but it was about EC Comics, not MST3K.

I like to imagine what would have happened if the ‘net existed in its current form when MST3K was still going strong. There would be SO MANY fan sites, review sites, future episode speculations, live chats during episodes… EUPHORIA!!

  4. I wrote the piece for Reason. It should be on newsstands about now (I haven’t seen it yet) and on the web in a month or so.

I’m interested to see this – on the one hand mst is like an early mashup and CT has shown that the writing is highly distributable (RT writes separately then pools their riffs too, don’t they?)

On the other hand, at 90 minutes without commercials, they’re decidedly out of step with youtube and most modern tv.

Guess I’ll have to wait for the article.

The new issue of Horror Hound magazine has a couple page article on Cinematic Titanic, along with an interview with Joel and J. Elvis, then a shorter, funnier interview with them (where they ask questions like “What 3 stores would be in your dream mall?” and “Who’s your favorite member of Kiss?” (Joel’s least favorite is Paul Stanley).

This isn’t the first time “Reason” has referenced MST. On my MST page I have this quotation:

“Newer models of the consumption of popular culture have a lot in common with a show such as Comedy Central’s Mystery Science Theater 3000, in which wise-cracking characters watch B movies and provide running commentary. The characters in MST3K represent what’s known in literary studies as ‘resisting readers.’ They don’t merely soak up what they see, they actively process information, spin it to their own purposes, and critique it.” — Nick Gillespie, “View Masters,” Reason, February 1996.

I haven’t read the new article yet, but my wife was pleasantly surprised to be able to point it out to me.

Yeah, I think the benign and rollicking anarchy appeals to those who ‘get it’, and I’d certainly hesitate to apply any political motivation to anything BBI has done, even though ‘Reason’ is a political magazine. Even ‘National Review’ has spoken highly of the show.
What was so striking about Mr. Stooksbury’s article is that by encouraging us to ‘Keep circulating the tapes’, BBI was actually a paradigm, foreshadowing the success of the internet, and the innate human desire to find other folks to share our fun and creativity with.
