HA! Nice to see Joel’s reaction to the Jaws Rifftrax was basically the same as mine. That guy…he knows where its at.

  3. Jaws is Jaws, but that’s not “MST3K.”

Umm, I think they meant the riffing part, Joel.

I’m a little concerned about Joel’s RiffTrax Jaws comment. Isn’t that the way flame wars really catch fire? I still say we are fortunate there are two groups giving us this stuff. As long as the quality is there more can be better.

Yeah, I was a little surprised by Joel’s comment as well. You wouldn’t ever catch the Rifftrax guys ever saying anything negative about Joel’s work publicly.

Also another of Joel’s comment’s irked me: “I did notice that after we started, they started doing older, “MST3K”-type movies.”

Most (all?) of those- Reefer Madness, House on Haunted Hill, Carnival of Souls, etc.- were originally done by Mike Nelson solo years before Cinematic Titanic started.

But certainly, one could make the argument that the decision to re-release the Legend films as three-riffer editions was, in part, a direct response to CT’s success with more “MST3K” style content.

I think Joel gets to say whatever he wants. It’s his baby, and if he thinks it’s odd to use “MST3K” and “Jaws” in the same sentence (which it is), then he has more than a right to make his opinion known.

I like both projects. I buy most of what both camps sell, and it’s great to have two teams of super-funny people selling riff-based entertainment. Both sides have their flaws, but really, it’s an embarrassment of riches (riffage?)

I agree- it’s a GREAT time to be a MSTie. Too much is better than not enough, and it’s KILLING me I’m too broke to buy more stuff from both camps…

Didn’t Rifftrax start doing shorts in earnest after CT was announced? That might be what Joel was referencing. As for the Jaws comment, I kind of get what he meant, but it could use some clarification.

Actually, as far as I remember, Rifftrax started doing more bigger budget films (along with an increase in shorts) after CT came out. It wasn’t until the begining of this year that I noticed them getting back to the older films.

They did jump right in with Star Wars Holiday Special right when people were speculating whether that would be CT’s first film.

  13. GersonK says:

@oddstock : To be fair, I think the reason they did that one was also one of the big reasons that rumor existed – because a lot of people wanted that one riffed. I doubt it was a calculated attempt to scoop Cinematic Titanic.

My original theory for re-working the Legend films solo riffing into three riffer editions was it was probably no more than a cheap ploy to increase sales of the Legend discs as well as new RiffTrax MP3 sales with minimal amount of writing. Basically I saw it as an attempt to be lazy as opposed to muscling in Cinematic Titanic territory.
Then the release of the RiffTrax DVD’s of the Legend Films releases so soon on the heals of the 3 Riffer MP3 seems to shoot down half of my theory. Still I don’t think RiffTrax updating previous material constitutes trying to muscle in on Cinematic Titanics “old movie turf.”

@GersonK: right, but regardless of whether it was a calculated attempt or not, isn’t the point more about perception/how it came across?

#12 I don’t see how the Star Wars Holiday Special could have been Cinematic Titanic’s first (or any) film. Since CT does DVD’s only there is no way they would have got that one licensed.
RiffTrax and their MP3’s only is the only way that title gets done.

#16 You’re right, it couldn’t have. But I remember people speculated wildly about it at the time because the title of the first CT release was a secret, because it was advertised to be a particularly bad film, because it would be released in time for X-mas, and because it would be performed at ILM. The ILM factor alone made it seem possible. But again, I mentioned it because of how things looked – not because of how things were. The timing of the RT release was a wild coincidence which seemed a little too coincidental in a way. Emphasis on the word ‘seemed’. Just an observation, not trying to stir things up.
