In times of ancientness (October, 1972) there was a cover of Mad Magazine that featured gap-toothed Alfred E. Newman eating an ear of corn. The cob was denuded except for the single remaining row directly in front of Alfred’s dental deficiency.

I remember that one.

Wow, that’s the worst case of bad close captioning since I saw a news broadcast denoting the Ramones induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the “Raw Moans.”

I love B&MJ but I just can’t with this one, because of the captioning. The “actors” are saying one thing, the captions say something different, and then there’s the riffing on top of that. :-(

Yeti:
How about watching the short on a larger screen or more than once?
The short is only twenty minutes.

No, I get it, and I’m truly glad others can watch this but it doesn’t work for me because of the (wrong) captioning on top of the speaking and the riffing. Too much input. Warning, warning, Will Robinson!!! (Yeti’s mind explodes.)

Yeti:
I’m sorry about that.
To cheer you up, here’s a clip.
Since Spider-Man is popular again, and you’re a Yeti, I hope you’ll enjoy this. :-)

Mary Jo riff:
“The closed captioning just goes ahead and says whatever it wants to . . . “

Since I have nothing to say about this topic, I’ll raise one that occurred to me just a few minutes ago:
Although it’s well-known that Tom repeatedly attacks Crow throughout the series (via car, plane, sarcastic “This is the story of a robot named Crow” narration, and so on), I realized that Joel occasionally “mistreated” Crow too (I don’t recall Mike ever noticeably favoring one over the other).
In addition to tearing off Crow’s arm at least twice in the theater, Joel frequently ignored Crow when he tried to report the arrival of a exterior visitor several seconds before Joel noticed and called up Rocket Number 9. When he gave Tom a cool gift, he gave Crow the “lame” gift of sensible slacks, and he once teamed up with Tom to taunt Crow by playing ball in front of him yet refusing to let him join (in Monster A-Go-Go; sure, he later gave Crow a Snickers for being a good sport about it, but still).
It’s more noticeable because I don’t recall any occasions of Joel instead favoring Crow over Tom (although that of course doesn’t mean that there weren’t any). If I was certain that Joel created Tom before he created Crow (he created Gypsy third, as noted when in that one episode where Gypsy got to riff in the theater, Tom remarked “You should have stopped at two [bots], Joel.” (incidentally implying that Joel didn’t create Cambot at all so Cambot must have already been on the SOL when Joel was sent into space)), I’d venture that Crow is a victim of Middle Child Syndrome. But I’m not certain of that.
So there’s that, anyway.

Servo is the youngest; Beeper existed before Tom. I agree with you, Joel was less attentive/loving to Crow. In one of the KTMA episodes, he tells Crow to “go get my belt”, and the next theater segment Crow says something about how he hurts, implying that Joel actually beat him. Yes, Crow is a robot. But they can feel pain, or simulated pain. How many times did Joel drag Crow off at the end of a host segment to discipline him? Think about the end of Patrick Swayze Christmas.
The interesting thing is that Joel is a middle child, with an older sister (whom I have heard Joel mention exactly once in the many, many interviews I’ve read and listened to) and a younger brother. But as the oldest son in a religious family, well, I don’t think he was ever treated like a middle child is; from everything I’ve heard him say about his childhood, he was given a lot of latitude and support to do his own thing.

Back on topic.
I found out that “Charlie’s Christmas Secret” stars a young Seth Green.
The short was part of “Young People’s Specials,” another network’s attempt to emulate ABC’s “Afterschool Special.”
