RIP Penny Marshall

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.–Penny Marshall, the nasally, good-natured Bronx native who starred on the ABC ratings sensation “Laverne & Shirley” before shattering records as a top-grossing female director in Hollywood, died Dec. 17 at her home in the Hollywood Hills. She was 75.

MSTies will recall that she was mentioned in a host segment in episode 423- BRIDE OF THE MONSTER.

The Hollywood Reporter has the story.

Complications related to diabetes. That’s a slow process in any case, but I hope that Ms. Marshall was spared the worse versions. RIP

I hadn’t seen A League of Their Own in over a decade, and by chance decided to give it a re-watch a couple weeks ago. DAMN does that one hold up. It’s kind of strange she didn’t direct more.

    As a Milwaukee man born and bred may I just say, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!”

I can think of two people who were waiting for her at the Pearly gates. Her brother Garry, and one of her best friends, Carrie Fisher.

  5. I read that she auditioned for the part of Gloria in “All in the Family”. (She met Rob Reiner at the auditions.) Wouldn’t that have been great, Penny Marshall as Archie Bunker’s daughter? She would have even given Meathead a run for his money. Missed opportunities.

Meathead went on to help make Lenny a legitimate actor. I liked it when MSNBC did one last Schlemiel, Schlemazel in her honor. RIP, Ms. Marshall.

One of my favorite actresses. Laverne, with the L on her shirts… icon. I own the whole series and felt it was great for longer than Happy Days was. Happy Days jumped the shark before Fonz jumped the shark.

She would have made a great Gloria, maybe even better than Struthers was. Easy to imagine it.

that’s a very moving pic of her and Fisher. And her Bro is fantastic in Lost in America, one of my favorite movies.

Haven’t seen it in decades, but I can still sing the Laverne & Shirley theme song word for word.

RIP, Ms. Marshall; may angels sing thee to thy rest.

And League is featured prominently in M&tB’s Femmy Movies Game at the end of Alien From LA, but can’t recall whether “Riding in Cars with Boys” was either. To her credit, “Big” was not.

While David Lynch tried to do his best for Squiggy’s career, but it never quite caught on.

(And I remember Marshall and Cindy Williams doing a celebrity appearance on NYC’s “Wonderama” during Laverne & Shirley’s 70’s heyday, revealing the true Bronxlyn origin of the “Hassenpfeffer Inc.” rhyme, and performing the whole thing for a new generation of street-deprived NYC kids.
Darn, the things you can’t find on YouTube when you need to.) :(
