20th Anniversary Set Going Down Under

Shout! Factory has sublicensed the MST3K 20th Anniversary Box Set to Beyond Home Entertainment, who has retitled it as “Mystery Science Theatre 3000 – Vol. 1” for release in Australia and New Zealand. It’s due out on June 10th, but you can pre-order it now.

Note: This is NOT the same as the Vol. 1 set released by Rhino Home Video.

Thanks to David Hill in New Zealand for the head’s up!

Is this the first non US/Canada release for MST? I know the movie was released elsewhere (wasn’t there a nice German DVD of it?) but I don’t remember ever hearing about any foreign releases of the series.

    So Australia’s region 4; not what I would’ve guessed.

As a Transfan, I gotta say I HATE the region system, since region 1 is about the only one the three Japanese Transformers G1 series haven’t been released in.

What other regions have already gotten MST3K DVDs, anyhoo?

    Yay, synchronicity again! 11:47pm forever!

And will the mini-bust of Crow be going down under too?

Let’s hope he lands on Yahoo Serious…

  4. Ross says:

The Movie has had a region 2 (ie: Europe and the UK) release, but they’ve never sub-lisenced the series proper for DVD release in Europe. Hopefully, this is a sign that the powers are waking up to the fact that there are MSTies in parts other than North America, even if those damn Aussies get to see it before we do!

Hey, they spelled the show’s name wrong!

  6. Mark Shields says:

In the US it’s spelt “Theater” but in Australia and the UK (where I am) it’s spelt “Theatre”. Just like we would spell color as colour, favor as favour etc. So technically both are correct.

Oh, and the movie was never released on DVD in the UK. It was available on VHS, but I only ever saw it for rental, I tried to buy it from them but they wouldn’t sell it. Grrrr.

I’ve seen copies of the region 2 DVD of MST3K:TM for sale- admittedly on ebay so they may not be legit. In fact, there’s one availible to buy now for onl £15.99 and free P&P!

I bought the German release of MST3K:TM a few years ago.
    It was a legit release.
Good extras too if you can get past the German language.
    I can’t speak German.
I bought it from the German Amazon.com

  9. Katana says:

“Who knows, they only speak German…”

My rough German translations (using two years of class, not any online translator) reveals the extras being a making-of (“where it all began”?), an interview “eight years later” with…two people I don’t know, a trailer…Eigentrailer…English trailer? Of what, I dunno…Then the next phrase, I have no idea. “Trabant” can be “satellite”, and we all know what meaning that holds…Trailershow, again, no idea. A trailer of some sort.

The last extra is the original, uncut version of “This Island Earth”.

    I’m sorry, this was pointless and confusing. >_<;

I was thinking of picking up the German version of MST3K:TM, but it sounds like it doesn’t have any English overdubbing…or at least close-captioning(?)

  11. I am a fan of MST3K. I posted this news on my DEMONIC TOYS website, another film produced by Charles Band (Full Moon Features), whom also helped make LASERBLAST. Hopefully if any Full Moon fans in these two countries not too familiar with MST3K will decide to check it out. Or fans of LASERBLAST.

  12. Cronkite Moonshot says:

@Ross #7 I believe Germany is also Region 2, so those DVDs you see on eBay might be the German release.

@The Bolem #2 Regions BAH! I haven’t worried about regions for years now. Region free DVD players are creeping around all over the place. I’ve owned three Phillips players that were all both region free and featured PAL/NTSC converters built in. They were all purchased in regular stores for great prices. My current one was purchased at Best Buy for $70 and it only cost that much because it has an HDMI connection. I spent $45 on the one before that. You can play any DVD from anywhere in the world on those players as well as pretty much any other mpeg, divx or xvid file out there. Making them region free requires no hacking or modifying, you typically just open the tray and put in a number code with the remote, which activates a hidden service mode and allows you to change the region to whatever you want (but 0 is the only one you’d ever need as it lets you play everything). I doubt it would even void the warranty since it is a built in feature, and if you wanted you could simply change the region back to 1 if you did have to send it in for some reason.

Just to be clear, the movie MST3K and TIE are in original English OR German.
    The extras are all German.

It’s a bit off topic, but david C is correct about the German version of MST3K:TM. You can read my post about it here:

  15. My first DVD player was a Sampo DVD Player that was Region free and Macrovision free.

    Sampo means flavor. :)
