The Lost & Found Collection is essentially the new home for episodes that were forced to leave their old homes when one of their roommates expired. There’s nothing new to see here, the content remains the same. But we have a cool new cover, don’t we? And the episodes included here get to stay in print. That’s worth celebrating!

Interesting idea for a set. It appears the “roommates” they’re referring to are “The Final Sacrifice” and “Soultaker”.

Jeez, this pretty good, but it feels like the next step marking the winding down of official release of MST3K episodes. I have the feeling that eventually there will be nothing left.

With this odd-lot release, is there a list of episodes that (1) Haven’t been released yet and/or (2) Won’t likely ever be released? Asking for a friend (It’s really me…I don’t have a friend..)

And they couldn’t simply replace a new roommate like Rhino did for Godzilla vs. Megalon.
Well, you knew there HAD to be, sooner or later…That’s why there’s disk.

Well shoot, I have to give Shout credit for not letting some episodes be withheld through the loss of others. On the other hand, I have the original sets these were released on so this will be the first set since Shout took over that I will have to pass up.
I was thinking the next set would be a reissue of Rhino’s Volume 8. Hopefully there’s not a rights problem holding that (and the other Rhino sets) up.

We also got some official news on the MST3K comic book, it starts coming out in Sept. from Dark Horse:

It’s still odd that Shout hasn’t really tapped into their KTMA holdings yet. I would be very interested in upgrading a lot of those episodes in their entirety instead of just a disc with the host segments.

Is the MST3K Blooper Reel (Poopie) anywhere else besides The Essentials? If not, I will have to keep The Essentials, even though Manos and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians are elsewhere.

There was a standalone release that contained all three blooper specials, released in 2017. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear as if you can buy it from Shout Factory’s Store, as it was a limited edition item. eBay might have it, however.
A thought occurred to me about this Lost and Found release: Does this mean Shout is giving up trying to re-negotiate the rights to “The Final Sacrifice” and “Soultaker” (due to a stubborn distributor, or too high a price)? It would be unfortunate if that were the case, especially since those are two of the best episodes in the show.

Yep, the Poopie disc that came with Vol. 39 if you ordered soon enough is sold out.
And, yes, that’s exactly what that means. Final Sacrifice and Soultaker rights owners want too much, so the Lost and Found set was created. If there was any prayer of those 2 episodes getting back in print, Shout wouldn’t have made this L&F set. Those original sets were in print for a long time, so hopefully anybody who wanted one got one. Otherwise, it’s high priced eBay time.
Well, if Final Sacrifice ever does come back in print, let’s hope they remove that horrible popping sound that happened once about 30 minutes in. It’s really loud!

I go back forth over this, but I really think that those episodes in their entirety will never see the light of day. Not only are they rough and unpolished, there’s more than a share of un-politically correct humor contained in them. I doubt any involved wants that stuff out there as a representative of the show.
I enjoy the KTMAs, but I totally understand not putting them out.

I don’t think this means Volumes 14 & 17 will never get re-released. It’s just an efficient way to get the other six episodes back in print for DVD customers as quickly as possible. This isn’t like the Gamera collection where they have to re-negotiate for every movie in the set before they can sell them all again. Up until this point the Shout customer service department had to turn away fans with the desire to legally purchase them directly from the official sites. “Yeah, those six episodes you’re looking for were randomly tied to two unrelated episodes we can’t currently sell you. Sorry.” This way they can direct those particular customers to an actual product, provided they aren’t specifically looking for Soultaker and Final Sacrifice. What if their plan is to largely focus publishing efforts on the remaining OOP Rhino sets before they focus all their attention on the rights issues for OOP Shout sets? It could make sense since they’ve been unavailable for a longer period of time and might sell slightly better as a result. That would mean even if they manage to eventually get those rights back, the six otherwise legally salable episodes may have had to sit on a proverbial bench while Volumes 8-12 get new Shout editions. Much like the Singles Collection, this was a smart move on Shout’s part considering their current position with distribution rights for these episodes.
They could be giving themselves more time to clear up rights issues with the remaining Rhino sets. It’s also possible they believed there was a higher demand from customers for the episodes on the Singles set and the Lost and Found set than there was for the Volume 8 episodes.
