XV Extras Update

Shout! Factory tells us that, due to technical quality issues, they’re replacing the footage of Joel and Trace’s MIT appearance with another bonus feature to be named later. They assure us they still plan to produce a featurette on “The Speculative Science and Technology of MST3K” with Joel and Trace for a future release.

Too bad, that sounded cool. Is there any more Poopie footage rolling around? That’s always good fun.

I am disappointed but hopeful as to what the new bonus feature may be. A new interview, behind the scenes footage, maybe even the scrapbook  ?

the scrapbook had some comedy central logo stuff on it, which may be a rights issue, it’s on the shout factory community board

  12. Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

If it’s just Comedy Central logos, can’t they just blur it out?

#4 re: episode change – if they were to change titles it’s mostly just negotiations that fail to come to terms, read that as “money”. I figure that the copy right holders fall into a few groups; grateful that anyone is even interested and will settle for a fair price, those that think that it’s worth gold but want diamond prices for something that at best may be a zicon, and then theres those who felt screwed over by the first broadcast treatment that they won’t say yes no matter what.

Personally the extras aren’t a big selling point for me. Most of the original Rhino sets never had extras. The extras are cool but not why I buy the sets. Frankly, I would still buy the set even if they took ALL the extras off.

I’d love to see footage (if any exists beyond them getting ready in front of the stage) from MST3K Live in Minneapolis many years ago (what movie did they watch?)

Count me as someone who isn’t going to let one dropped extra feature change their mind on buying a MST3K set; who knows, maybe the new extra feature will be more relevant to Volume XV. However, I hope this isn’t some precursor to how SF will be handling their sets; when they start changing the episode content , months before the release date, then I’ll start worrying!

  22. Ryan says:

Of all the reasons to not have a feature, “technical quality” sounds like they actually care about giving us good content. That is encouraging. I know I’ve watched their spectacular “History of MST3K” a few times already, it’s really fun.
Personally, I most want a Tom statuette to go with my Crow.

Hmm, yes. It would seem that a new scrap book could be made, using everything that they can legally use from the first one with updates from the remainder of the series, including The Last Dance: Raw

I do have to say that I have a small tinge of frustration over the fact that I’ve bought all those tapes (at a time when I have very little money, months and months of saving was involved), Poopie, Play Misie, Last Dance, Scrapbook, etc and if I’d waited I could have got them free.

Truth be told, I was a little surprised when I heard the MIT panel would be on the DVD. The acoustics were pretty terrible in that hall — in the fifth or sixth row I could barely hear what they were saying, and can only imagine what the videographer’s mike picked up.

#20, I’m pretty sure the live show was This Island Earth. I didn’t get to see it, but if I had to place a wager I’d say it was pretty different from the movie version. Maybe as an alternate audio for the special edition DVD we’re still waiting/hoping/praying for…

    #31 & 20

There were two live shows, actually. The first one featured Joel and riffed on “World Without End” starring Rod Taylor. Part of this one is available via a fan taping. The sound levels aren’t great, but what you can hear is really funny. Shame it never got to the series proper.

The second was the live run-though of “This Island Earth” at ConventioCon I. It was better than the movie version because they got to riff on the entire movie. Some of the riffs are different from the later movie; the one that sticks in my mind is Mike & the ‘bots, when the title appears, singing “‘This Island Earth’ doesn’t shine for me anymore!”
As I recall, a couple of bits from this show (like Dr. F’s grand entrance and Frank’s interpretive dance number) are included on the old “MST Scrapbook” tape.

    Hope this info helps.

    @ Jeff in Denver #3…

Not to dissuade you from your budding career as a television psychic or anything, but what makes you think that they would announce the titles to be in the set this early if they didn’t already have the negotiations for them done and the episodes locked in?

Anyway I’d like to see Shorts 3 as an extra at some point. I was never able to get it what with the idiotic way Rhino released it as a limited bonus for ordering The Essentials set over the phone. I love the shorts collections since they were some of my favorite things on MST, and they are perfect for those times where you feel like watching some MST, but it isn’t feasible to watch an entire episode.

I took it as more of a “****e happens” type statement. Rhino in the past has announced titles, and had the rights get yanked pretty close to the last second (I seem to remember even seeing box art that got changed due to such an event)

  41. outerspace says:

    #40

That never happened. The only time box art was changed was when Monster A-Go Go was changed to Monster A Go-Go. No rights to any mst movie were pulled before a release.

  42. Uncle Bill says:

@#40 For one thing this is Shout Factory not Rhino, but that doesn’t matter anyway, because Outerspace is correct, nothing like you describe did or would happen. Rights issues are the very first step in putting a set like this together, so a film wouldn’t “get yanked pretty close to the last second”. They have to master and produce the DVDs, which isn’t something that is just done overnight, so they have to know very early on that they definitely have the rights to a film, which involves a contractual agreement with the rights holder. They might have had negotiations for certain film rights fall apart unexpectedly, but that would be long before you or I would be seeing any box art or reading a press release with a list of the episodes in that upcoming set.

And as a preemptive on any “what about the whole Godzilla vs. Megalon thing?” reply, Rhino actually had all of that stuff finalized, and had every right to release the episode in Vol. 10. The people who they had negotiated the rights with were the ones who might not have actually had the rights to license them to begin with, and even that is debatable. The truth is probably closer to a situation in which everyone involved in the release of that Godzilla episode of MST were within their rights to do it, but Toho didn’t like it, and since Toho has more money to toss around than Rhino or the other party involved, Toho got their way whether they actually should have been able to stop it’s release or not.
