Weekend Discussion Thread: Season 11 on DVD

Alert regular Kenneth (what IS that frequency?) has this:

Eventually, they’ll release Season 11 on DVD. What ideas do you have for the release? Should it be one big set, or a few smaller ones? What extras would you like to see?

  1. Don’t really care all that much as I already have the episodes in HD (and not a huge fan of the season anyway) but the one recommendation I’d make is they also do a blu-ray version, for those folks who do want HD (which is more and more people). It could include a DVD as well, as is the common practice nowadays.

Thanks for using my topic! And I’ll have to check with Dan re: the frequency.

As for the Season 11 set, here are a few ideas:
    – Given the length of each episode, and the number of episodes, I figure it’ll have to be multiple sets, rather than one single one.
    – Documentary on how the relaunch was conceived, cast and filmed. Narrated by Mark Hamill.
    – Interviews with the cast and crew.
    – Deleted scenes and bloopers.
    – “Hi, I’m Doug McClure” Ballyhoo documentary on the actor.
    – Ballyhoo documentary on Amicus Productions.
    – “Dreadful, Dreadful Copenhagen” Ballyhoo documentary on the making of “Reptilicus”.
    – “All the Way from the R.O.K.” Ballyhoo documentary on the making of “Yongary”.
    – Interviews with the guest stars.
    – Interviews with stars of featured movies.
    – “Play MST for Me” compilation of Season 11 songs.
    – Mini-posters by Steve Vance for each episode
    – Bonus disc with footage from “Watch Out for Snakes” tour.

    How do those sound?

I see four box sets. 1-4, 5-8, 9-12. Set four containing 13-14, a hopefully recorded version of the two live shows. Among the four sets: all the promotional stuff. Crow & Servo q&A, Stranger Things riff. Mst3k visit Netflix. Cast Q&A, Highlights of the final kickstarter campaign. I may have missed a few.

I’d forgotten about the promotional items. That’d mean including the on-line fan Q&A with Joel and the cast, as well as the YouTube segments with Tom & Crow.

  5. While the movie rights are all locked down I say they just do a full series set. If feasible, maybe have docs about as many of the movies as they can. Then again, some episodes are rough to sit through, mostly because of the movies. Wizards of the Lost Kingdom. Ugh. So it would be more fair to make four episode sets like we’ve been getting all these years.

I have to admit that I never got around to watching the season/series finale (Who are we kidding, Netflix is too chicken to commit to an hour and a half series like MSTK3.)

Looks like Kenneth Morgan has the question covered. But wait! What if they went old school and started by issuing individual episodes on VHS cassettes with colorful cardboard containers wrapped in cellophane? You wouldn’t even need to open them, just tastefully arrange them on your display shelf where they can await the arrival of the soon-to-be-produced tiny plastic replicas of Yongary and Caroline Munroe’s cleavage. It would be marketing genius!

I almost forgot. Maybe a bonus for wizards one is the full movie with the recalled rifftrax. Seems like Joel and Mike have gotten very accommodating lately. The mst3k reunion show and shout factory tv now showing rifftrax films.

I want a Ballyhoo doc on Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner Robert Lopez’s involvement in the new season. It will be called: From “EGOT to Eegah.”

I’d like a few features to help them fit seamlessly with the other episodes I have physical copies of:

    – Make promos for C-list 80s comedies like Earth Girls are Easy to put in the middle of episodes.
    – Hire Penn Jillette to interrupt the end theme.
    – Ads for America’s Talking, CNNFn, The Box, and CDi.
    – More Mentos Ads
    – Add an optional filter to give us that authentic 3rd generation 90s VHS copy feel.

I bet they’ll release it in one big set at first, similar to the version those of us who sprung for the set via Kickstarter are supposed to get. (And to Mike’s Blu-Ray question, we did have that option via Kickstarter. I can’t imagine Shout would make a commercial release DVD-only.)

If memory serves, that Kickstarter set is supposed to include a documentary as well. I’d include Ballyhoo docs and original trailers, like Kenneth lays out above.

After a few years, then you break it up and sell in four or five-volume sets. All depends on what Shout’s future plans are regarding reissues and classic episode rights being cleared.

One complete box set please. Even if it costs an arm and a leg. Plus the option for close captioning. My father loves the show but is hard of hearing.

  12. Sitting Duck says:

Kenneth Morgan’s suggestions look pretty comprehensive (great Ballyhoo feature titles there). Perhaps some movie trailers as well.

As for number of volumes, the fourteen episodes lengthwise are equivalent to twenty-eight episodes for an hour long show. That’s slightly more than a traditional broadcast network season. Since Shout would invariably stuff it to the gills with features, splitting it into two volumes seems about right.

An alternate title for a Ballyhoo feature on Reptilicus could be Something Rotten in This State of Denmark.

I’m up for more geek-historical real Ballyhoo featurettes (yaaa-AAAH!!) on the more storied cult-fan films like Reptilicus and Yongary–and don’t they already HAVE one for Christmas/Wasn’t?–but let’s not encourage them too excessively on that Doug McClure thing, outside of whatever they can do for Amicus and one big Land/Core featurette:
Once we start jumping on the Pavlovian cult-refs, and start pretending that their own preemptively artificial-synthesized in-house “running gags” are somehow real fan gags, we’ll end up back like the Other Guys in no time…Wasn’t that what the New series was trying to help prevent?
Next thing you know, we’d have “I’m a Widdle Baby” t-shirts.

And of course, the deleted ending of The Time Travelers is a non-negotiable must, as is the Al Adamson story.

    Mike “ex-genius” Kelley:

Since Netflix was streaming in at least 720p, a Blu-ray set would be possible in the way Shout couldn’t with the Classic series.
One box is fine if it’s six Titanic shows, but with 13-14, plus maybe the live bonus Superargo, is WAY too much disk count for my wallet, with or without the “DVD copy” (which some companies are now finally considering retiring, nine years after we all forgot why they started in the first place)–
If bringing in Superargo brings it up to 15, I could see three sets of five, with more Blu-ray storage for a smaller, lower-rez show allowing two on one disk for non-extra movies.

Still, the trick about MST3K disks is to get them all out in one big kamikaze blast before, ahem, someone takes the rights away again, but they’ll all be safely on our shelves by then, haha, neener-neener! :)

I figured on a Doug McClure documentary because, in addition to appearing in three MST episodes, he also had a long and successful career in show business. That includes lead roles in several TV series (most famously in “The Virginian”) and many guest shots. Sounds like he’d be an interesting subject.

Then again, considering that there are two other sci-fi/fantasy movies he was in (“People that Time Forgot” and “Warlords of Atlantis”), they could schedule those for Season 12, then do the McClure doc as part of that set.

As an alternate choice, “The Loves of Hercules” could serve as the basis for a general doc on Herc movies in the Sixties. Or have they already done one of those?

And think Original EricJ makes a good point re: rights claims. We’ve been burned by that in the past. And I completely forgot about the full ending for “Time Travelers”; thanks for the reminder.

They did a Joseph E. Levine featurette for the original Steve Reeves “Hercules”, that focused on how he imported the Italian market for sword-and-sandal.
The Jayne & Mickey story of how Loves came about would be a more interesting story than the movie was. (The riffs seem to imply most of us already know the backstory, but what about the kids who don’t?)

And Charles B. Griffith’s long pre-directorial past as a Corman screenwriter would liven up Wizards of the Lost Kingdom II–
Given that we’ve got almost half a season of Roger Corman’s 70’s-80’s New World titles, also an interesting story to paste onto how we got Roger’s big “A-picture” Avalanche–Or an analysis of the whole fleeting 70’s era of big-budget Irwin Allen disasters it came from.

Well, we’ve already seen the disc menus, so we know there will be 2 episodes to a disc, no matter how they are released (big box set or smaller box sets). I spoke with one of the guys from Shout at San Diego Comic Con who was working on the bonus features and he said they are packed to the brim on the disc (making it sound like a bonus features disc). He wouldn’t give specifics on what was included other than a feature length documentary.

It’ll be all in one box set, similar to the one the Kickstarter backers will get. DVD or Blu-Ray, your preference. I just sincerely hope they don’t add more extras to the commercial version that’s coming out next year. I don’t want to double-dip.

I would think Shout! would jump at the chance to release a season box set, since Season 11 presents their first opportunity to do so.

I’m definitely pro-FULL SEASON set. I’ve always wished they could do that with MST3k, but understand that it would be impossible with the old episodes. But since all 14 movies of this season were cleared at the same time, I’d be shocked if Joel & the team haven’t already made a home video release deal between the rights holders and the distributors.

But whether it’s a full season set or broken up into individual releases, please please PLEASE release it on Blu-ray (and DVD)… I’ve been dying for more MST3kHD content since watching MST3K: The Movie on blu-ray for the first time!

Some stuff I want to see in terms of extras:

-Uncut versions of the films featured in the episodes (especially considering some of the lampshaded cuts that were made in some episodes and MST3K version of The Time Travelers missing its twist ending).
-The aforementioned Rifftrax commentary for Wizards of the Lost Kingdom.
-Ballyhoo’s documentary on the making of The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t.
-New documentaries on the making of Starcrash and Carnival Magic.

My worry of a full season box would be getting hit with import duty (I’m guessing the set won’t get a UK release). I haven’t seen any of the new shows at all but happy for 4 shows per box. Extras have to cover the Kickstarter, maybe some background on the movies and a full live show. I suppose they have the option of releasing single shows without extras and then a box set with extras but I hope they don’t go that way. Has anyone any idea when the new season will get a DVD release?

  32. I cannot reveal ALL the extra’s that are included on the Kickstarter backer edition of Season 11, but I can tell you that it is loaded! Per the Kickstarter updates, my new Ballyhoo feature-length documentary is the complete story of bringing back MST3K and the making of Season 11. I was there from the beginning documenting the entire process, from concept to Netflix.

There was an update over the summer that made it sound like the commercial release was going to be released in May.

  34. The Kickstarter set arrived the other day and the extras are quite reboot-related heavy. Nothing in the way of individual film docs that I have grown to love from Ballyhoo. I do so hope that when season 11 is released to the non-Kickstarter contributing public that there are no individual film documentaries as bonus features. As much as I love them, I do not want to repurchase this set.

For the ‘Loves of Hercules,” they should somehow try to get the rights to the TV movie made years ago about Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay about their marriage around the time the film was made.
Mickey Hargitay was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Would be interesting, to say the least. lol
