IMDb lists a running time of 108 minutes for this film, yet Rifftrax has cut it down to 77 minutes?

While I have no issue, for the most part, with them cutting out a few minutes here or there (especially where it might pertain to objectionable material), anyone else have a problem with them cutting out nearly a third of the entire film on this one?

Saying up front that splatter and gore films are my least favorite kind it will come as no surprise that in my opinion they could have cut 107 minutes of this material and substituted repetitions of Bambi Meets Godzilla without reducing the overall quality. I usually try to be positive here on SN, but this time I failed. Pardon.

    From Thrashalla (rifftrax forum):

The movies are being edited for content, pacing, and just overall comedy. It’s the same thing that they used to do with MST, just now it doesn’t have to be done for ad breaks. They go through the move, give me the timecode that they want cut, I make it look as natural as I can. In the end it enables them to riff movies that have potential but they otherwise wouldn’t touch.

Cutting 30 minutes seems excessive, though.

  6. If they cut out 25% of the movie, they should charge 25% less.

There are 1000s of movies that could be riffed. To say that some movies have to be cut that much in order to be riffed is silly. Just pick a different movie.

But my guess is they just want shorter movies because it means less writing, less studio time, but the same amount of money.

I trust them. But they (well, except Mike, maybe) are basically just reading lines. I don’t trust the people at Rifftrax who do the actual writing of the jokes. The quality has gone downhill and gotten stale.

It’s also possible that a movie needs to be below a certain length to fit on a standard blank DVD. I have the vague feeling that they cannot be much longer than 90 minutes.

Off topic, but Bill posted yesterday on his Twitter that the longstanding money issues regarding MST3K residuals have been resolved.

Yay, now they don’t have to do Rifftrax anymore! :)
Of course, does that mean they get back residuals, or just residuals on future Shout boxset sales, now that Shout isn’t making any more?

(And while we can dabble in the “Wes Craven sells his name over the title like Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino do” era of minor B-titles, let’s hope it doesn’t extend all the way into “Wishmaster”. Life’s too short.)

If you are on Twitter, ask Bill about the residuals issue. He is quite friendly and personable.

By the way, has it occurred to you that even though you don’t like RiffTrax, many people DO?

I say more power (and more press) to Mike, Kevin, Bill, Mary Jo, Bridget, Conor, Sean, Molly, et al. :-)

Yeah, it’s just, the way he tells his jokes, I’m afraid if I Tweeted him, he wouldn’t STOP tweeting back… ;)

You can fit 2 hours on a blank dvd, no problem

Then, it occurred to me that you love yourself enough for ten significant others.

Many of these lesser horror pics are heavily padded with redundant scenes. This may be an extreme edit, but i’d prefer it to the audio-riff they once did for “Twilight: New Moon.” which riffed the Entire length of that film, which seemed an hour longer than “Berlin Alexanderplatz”; I think many of us are close to the saturation point on Riffs. The original MST3K is on PLUTO, COMET, YOU TUBE, etc. (CHANNEL PEAR: R.I.P.), the new version is on NETFLIX, RIFFTRAX puts out 40+ releases annually and Trace & Frank are doing a live tour. Maybe we’ve got too much Irony in our diet?

Sadly, I agree. I quit watching a while back. It used to be a lot more humorous. Maybe I just caught some bad episodes.
