Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3K Viewing Habits

Alert reader Dan writes:

I’ve talked to a lot of MST fans and found that a lot of them pop on an episode before they drift off to sleep. I also do that, same with my brother. Maybe some watch an episode every morning with their Wheaties?

So what are your MST3K viewing habits?

(And I’m always interested in discussion thread ideas, btw!)

Yeps. One of my favorites, for some reason. When I burned it to DVD I filled out the rest of the disc with History Channel Halloween goodies about ghosts and grave-robbers and movie trailers and stuff, all within the general ghosts/skulls theme. I did this with a couple other titles, like The Dead Talk Back (another fave) and Sampson vs the Vampire Women (possibly my favorite at all). Great fun. It’s a horrible movie with some actually nice atmospheric moments. In one sequence the score is particularly cool, in an eerie way.

I know “yes” would have sufficed but this seems like the thread for surplus geek exuberance.

I didn’t know so many people watched before going to sleep. I guess I got into the habit because it came on Sci-Fi late Sunday nights.

Well I usually watch an episode a week or so. Me or my wife will pick an episode we haven’t seen in a while, and I’ll usually stay awake till the end (but my wife’s been known to slip off to dream land about halfway through).

I’ve also been tormenting one of my friends in our monthly get togethers with either some Rifftrax or MST3K. Just did the Rifftrax shorts disk with them and they loved “Drugs are Like That”.

At work, we’ll do a monthly two day lunch movie. I brought in “I Accuse My Parents” once and we’ve been viewing a show almost every month. Of course I have to keep those viewings to movies that are “safe” for the work environment – mostly black and white flicks or shorts. But “Clonus” did get some serious laughs.

But as others have said, MST3K is perfect for when you’re feeling down or have had a real crappy day. My wife’s been working long hours, so it feels like we’ve been watching quite a bit of the show lately. Not that either of us complains. She’s the one that introduced me to the show, so I guess she’s the older fan. ;)

Allmost everyday I watch a movie before dinner. After dinner I go for a walk. Then I putter around a little and have dessert while watching some MST, Cinematic Titanic, or Rifftrax. “What’s Up Tiger Lily?” and “Blobbermouth” get in the rotation once in a while too. Then I play video games on my computer for an hour or two before showering and going to bed. Except for the first few KTMA episodes I’ve got a full MST set as well as most of the rifftracks and all the CT releases, so I’m well stocked for laughs.

How about for a topic: What MSTed movies do you think have some merit? Space Travelers, First Spaceship on Venus, and Rocket Ship X-M come to mind.

How funny!! I’ve often wondered if other MSties fall asleep to MST episodes too! EVERY Night, pretty much, my husband and I put in an MST episode. It’s so comforting to watch these–to me they NEVER get old! After a rough day at work and going back to school to become a respiratory therapist, MY therapy is to put in the MST episode of “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die”. Let’s face it–I love people, love helping them, would never say this to their faces–BUT–can sometimes be real “dickweeds” (as Crow would probably put it!). So, to put things back into the proper perspective, I play this episode just to hear the hilarious riff, “BREATHE, STUPID, BREATHE!!” Cracks me up every time and reminds me that everything really is going to be ok!! (Plus, if I encounter rudeness anywhere the following day, I have that lovely riff to fall back on (reciting it to myself, of course!). By the way, it’s very cathartic when driving in Dallas traffic  –DRIVE, STUPID, DRIVE!!

Wow! This was a great topic! I think we learned a lot about each other! Maybe too much…

Anyway, since a lot of people induce slumber with Mst3k, how about a discussion of a good sleepy-time episode? For instance, I like “Touch of Satan” but would NEVER watch it before bed. “Day the Earth Froze” is much better dream material.

“Surplus Geek Exuberance” – now THAT’S a great phrase, Castle Monster (#151), one that everyone here appreciates, I bet…could we all use it from time to time?

  9. Speaking of The Brain that wouldn’t Die, it’s on Turner Classic Movies right now. And I don’t think this is the first time. Odd choice for a classic movie at first blush, but I guess it kind of is.

I actually watched part of “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” on TCM while doing some ironing tonight. It just wasn’t right without the MST3K treatment!! I found myself filling in some of the spots with the riffs from MST3K! (Yes, I know, I’m insane.)

CastleMonster – Screaming Skull is one my all time faves also. Come to think of it, “surplus geek exuberance” would probably be an (almost) excellent name for a rock band. Hey, if someone can use Vampire Weekend, or Panic at the disco, why not this? Actually, Butthole Surfers has to be my favorite name of all time. Maybe this could be the germ of an idea for a thread – best/worst music in a mstie movie.

I thought a good thread (or threads)might relate to music used in episodes. Best song? Catchiest song? Song that while despising it, it just gets stuck in your head? Worst song (Never Get Anything Wet, I’m looking at you!!!)?

Music would make a great discussion. I also thought about – just in time for mother’s day/father’s day – Worst Parents. The “I Accuse My Parents” parents are an obvious choice. But when you start thinking about it, there are lots of others. “Manos”, “Johnny at the Fair”, “Violent Years”, “High School Big Shot”….. A “buffet of loathsomeness”.

Ooh, I like that one Pearliemae. Neglectful parents definitely help advance the plot in one way or another. Some of my faves:

    The Duvall’s from Catalina Caper

Mike from Manos (She’s my baby. She’ll understand.)

The crap farmers from Giant Spider Invasion

Wow! I could list ’em all day!!!

BTW, I was hoping the Oscar-type topics were going to go on for a while longer. What about worst supporting actors? Droppo, Cousin Billy and Rex from Bloodwaters of Dr. Z would get my votes!

I am so happy that I’m not the only one who falls asleep watching MST3K! I have a pretty steady rotation of films, but my favorites are Invasion U.S.A., The Sinister Urge (“is a stupid urge”) and I Accuse My Parents. I think it might be the “Truck Farming” that does me in.

I caught “Brain” on TCM too. Strange, it must have been a TV edit. There were some scenes missing that were included in the MST3K version. Mostly the bloody bits (the assistant getting his arm ripped off, the doctor getting chewed), but also the girl fight at the club.

It was also interesting to see what was edited from the film to fit into the MST3K timeslot. The scene of the doctor running back to “the country place” took forever in this edit.

I’m an ipoder also. I’ll watch some on my bus ride to and from work, or when I’m doing intense writing. I find MST both relaxes and stimulates wit.

My wife is not a fan of the show, so I usually only see it on the big(ger) screen when I’m doing chores or sick.

  23. Bad Wolf: To put a DVD’s audio on my Ipod I rip the audio with DVD Audio Ripper by IMToo software. Do a Google search, it will turn up, or others that do the same thing. After ripping the audio (I use 64 kbs, it’s decent sound. If you want to you can use 128 for CD quality) Then start Itunes and go to: File – Add File to Library. Choose the file and it will be in your library, then transfer to your Ipod. The DVDs will give you great audio.
To put a VHS tape on is a bit tougher, you have to sample the whole thing, then cut out the commercials, convert it into an mp3 etc… But I have done it.

I first started using MST3K to get to sleep after my dad died some 12 years ago I started with the laserdisc of MST3K: The Movie, then started compiling multi-episode VCR tapes I nicknamed “sleeping pills,” which I transferred to DVD eventually. It’s either the SOL or the original-cast recording of UNDER MILK WOOD, or I can’t snooze off. (I suddenly find myself imagining an episode of MST3K written by Dylan Thomas–VERY weird idea . . .)

I’m so suprised to see people have the same habit as me; EVERY single night before a goto sleep I pop in an episode of mst3k. I’ve been doing this for years. Having every season burned to dvd, along with all the offically released episodes, over the years I have watched the run in order, backwards, offically released eps only, random favorites ect but never does a day end without mst3k.

#129 and #173 Thanks for the advice! I forgot that now they’re releasing the Rhino sets on iTunes and have the VOD from Rifftrax, so there’s already more options than ever to watch.

I have to agree with others. Popping MST3K in the DVD player before I go to bed helps me drift off into the most relaxing sleep – not because the shows are boring, but because the episodes have a way of completely relaxing me.

I’m a Mid-Morning MSTIE. My mind has to be fully awake to be able to catch all the riffs. The best time for me to watch an episode is around 11am on a Saturday leading into lunch.

I’ve tried for years to watch various eps at night, but usually I’m too tired to even muster a laugh, even if I recognize a riff as being funny, I just can’t muster the energy to laugh out loud, so morning it is!
