Most people remember him as the director of such acclaimed films as “Silence of the Lambs,” “Philadelphia” and unquestionably the best rock ‘n’ roll concert film ever, “Stop Making Sense.”
But MSTies will recall his small part as one of the monster’s victims in the movie in episode 704- THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN.
I honestly haven’t seen too many of his films, but THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is an undisputed classic. And I also really like THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN episode. I watched the original, uncut version sometime ago, and even enjoyed it in its own right. RIP, Johnny

Johnathan Demme was a masterful filmmaker and was very well admired and respected.
Cancer sucks.
My condolences to the Demme family.

Uh, not exactly tasteful (cancer never is), seeing as I was ten minutes away from posting that Demme had also directed the music video for the Talking Heads “Once in a Lifetime”, whose MTV exposure also gave the song its own importance in MSTiedom. (“You might be living in a shotgun shack” “This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!”)
Riff references to Swimming to Cambodia were also plenty during the later years.
…Now would be a good time to think “Awk-warrrd!” ;)

It’s his credits riff from 704, dummy.

Roger Corman had a nice memorial on his Facebook page for Demme. And above all else, let us not forget Demme’s masterwork: Caged Heat. RIP

Seriously bummed, this guy was wonderful. I was already a Talking Heads junkie when he did Stop Making Sense. Rescreened it recently and amazed at how well it holds up. I remember Ebert giving it two thumbs up and poor old fuddy duddy Siskel not understanding the music in the slightest. He also introduced me to Spalding Gray, Swimming to Cambodia was an epiphany. More than anything, though, was his overall body of work – what a range. RIP.
