Vol. 38 Press Release

Mystery Science Theater 3000:Vol. XXXVIII
Four DVD Box Set Features Previously Unreleased Episodes
Invasion USA, Colossus and The Headhunters, High School
Big Shot and Track of The Moon Beast

Available on DVD March 28th, 2017 from Shout! Factory

Riffer extraordinaire Mike Nelson hosts all four episodes in the 38th collection of episodes from the beloved comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, but the true theme for this set is diversity. Proving to the world that no single genre is immune to cheesy movies and that our hilarious heroes aboard the Satellite of Love are equal opportunity critics, Shout! Factory presents an incredible melting pot of cinema’s multicultural genres, including the worst in Cold War drama, Sword and Sandals, Juvenile Delinquents, and Monster movies.

Available March 28th, 2017 from Shout! Factory, Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVIII includes previously unreleased episodes Invasion USA, Colossus and The Headhunters, High School Big Shot and Track of The Moon Beast, as well as a plethora of bonus features including the featurette Zugsmith Confidential , Tracking A Moon Beast with actress Leigh Drake, Mike, by Joel interview, the original feature film of High School Big Shot, four mini-posters by artist Steve Vance and more!
In addition, the first 1,500 fans who order directly from ShoutFactory.com will receive an exclusive bonus disc, MST3K: Play MSTie For Me Triple Decker, which gathers 39 of the finest MST3K musical moments into one eminently singable package.

In Invasion USA, a tapestry of Cold War-era American archetypes discuss the perils of Communism before witnessing the invasion of America by an unnamed but Soviet-flavored army; Colossus and The Headhunters is a 1960 Italian flick that clearly found the swords and the sandals at an Italian movie thrift store. We have a hero, we have a damsel in distress, and we have plenty of bad guys. Atypical of this genre, however, there are no monsters, unless you count the filmmakers and cast; High School Big Shot follows a beleaguered young man who gets involved in a crime for a payoff that he thinks will cure the troubles with his alcoholic father and cheating girlfriend; and Track of The Moon Beast brings us a sad tale of a mineralogist’s nightly transformation into a killer reptile following an unfortunate meteor shower. Alas, even make up effects by legend Rick Baker cannot redeem this film.

Volume XXXVIII Bonus Features
· Zugsmith Confidential featurette
· High School Big Shot (original feature film)
· Mike, By Joel interview
· Tracking a Moon Beast with Actress Leigh Drake
· Theatrical Trailers

“Mike, By Joel” sounds really intriguing.

Shame they couldn’t get The Band That Played California Lady on record, but I’m quite surprised they got Leigh Drake to participate, simply because of how rough the Brains were on her in the riffing. “So how’s the pretending you’re not old going?” On the other hand, she’s a Minnesota native, which I didn’t realize. Wonder if she was aware of the show before she became a subject?

That Drake can be so cool about this makes the skin on folks like Joe Don Baker and Joe Dante (who is otherwise the man) seem even thinner.

    Lemme guess:
“He was really funny when we promoted him for the first time, and he was doing all these great riffs and imitations…”

Mr. H. was rather out of the loop during his “hot dog” years, and now thinks the SFC era is hysterically funny because he can’t bear to watch the CC episodes, including his own.

(rings gong) THERE: The joke has now officially been made. You may now continue with the thread, without further obligation.

One site mentioned the fact that this was all Mike-era eps. from both CC and SF…How stands the current availability list for S1-5 Joel eps? Have we fished out the ocean?

I love the name, but I’m jealous that I didn’t think of it first. I’m highly exited too. Track is in my top ten favorite eps. Can’t wait to see how Leigh Drake looks today.

Shut up, EricJ, I tell ya, shut up.

I like these episodes. I lioved the riffing on Invasion USA, which lifted my spirits at a time that I badly needed it, I loved the riffing on Colossus, which is unusual because sword and sandals are not my favorite genre, High School Big Shot, though a depressing film, was also expertly riffed. My favorite of the bunch though, is Track of The Moon Beast. One of the IMHO, premier episodes of the SciFi era and of the Shiw as a whole. I would’ve loved to see a feature on The Band That Played California Lady,(not a bad song IMO) but I am more than satisfied with these extras, particularly the unriffrd version of High School Big Shot, because I like to watch B movies, and this gives us a feeling of what the Brains went through in writing these riffs for our enjoyment.
BTW: I think Antiseptic Manor would be a great name for a band.

If anyone could make a rights claim, it’d be Shout Factory, since they were able to release this episode commercially. I hope this won’t be a case of the price on this set skyrocketing because it has to be discontinued.

PS – They took Roman Numerals out of the lower elementary school curriculum at least ten year ago. Sigh…

Eric, folks, et al. Allow me. In Space Children, Dr. Woman, AKA Baldy, AKA Mr. Drysdale says (I paraphrase) “A Scientist tries to scoop up a bit of truth in sand,” or something- point is- all MST3k episodes are filled with levity, you just need to find it. I find joy in all of them, Joel or Mike. And, I fully expect to love the new guys too. So, this is a GREAT set to enjoy. And, if you don’t- go back and watch Seasons 1-5/2- lot of love there for all of us. Happy Valentines Day from an old guy who had soup today.

Showing my age here, but does anyone remember the kids’ TV show about mathematics called “Square One”? It aired in the late ’80s and early ’90s and I don’t know who loved it more, me or my kids. We were (and still are) such nerds. I never forgot their sketch about Roman numerals: http://youtu.be/6DzfPcSysAg — and if you like that one, check out their “Angle Dance” video. Pure ’80s.

I remember Square One, too. My son went through a very loooong period of walking up to me at random times and saying, “Math Man isn’t here right now; he’s in the mathroom!” and then laughing wildly. He loved the humor. In fact, it was like a gateway to the humor of MST. (OMG, my son was a humor addict!)

I’m looking forward to this set. At last I can find a glock and a wheat penny in one convenient spot.

(I don’t recall much of Square One besides Mathnet, but the sketches were good. Ah, the days when PBS’s CTW still existed.)

Cool video, but talk about chronological conundrums! We have ’80s post disco artists in Roman times (not the font) singing a ’50s doo-wop song! Dr. Who goes “Whaaaat?!”.
