Kevin Gives Us a Shout Out

Thanks to Kevin and everyone on the MST3K Reunion panel for the mst3kinfo.com shout out! I really was concentrating on other people’s questions and not thinking about any of my own.

Many thanks for posting this. I loved when he gave you, our Jedi Master, a shout-out. It was like a shout-out to all us Padawans. :)

And it was really wonderful to listen to the discussion. This was much that I could have for along with the excellent riffs at the show.

Didn’t hear much from Frank, but then my antique first gen IPad stopped playing the video right after Brian’s recognition. Rats!

I loved this exchange between Frank and Trace towards the end.

Frank: “I’m working on a book, but I can’t reveal anything about it right now.”
Trace: “But, you just said it’s a book!”

Just click through and watch it on youtube. That’s what I had to do from my PC.

I enjoyed the press conference. But. Was it just me or did half the reporters have no clue what the event was all about? There seemed to be a lot of misinformed questions – and a lot of awkward silences by the panel.

    Where can I purchase Bridget’s T-shirt?

Well, not Bridget’s – it would not fit me quite as flatteringly – but one of identical design.

Clear up the most important question of the press conference: Was Joel eating chili or soup? Because he kept saying he went to The Loon for chili, but he and the others referred to soup, and I’ve never seen anyone drink chili.

One other thought: I wish more questions would have been directed to Trace. He generally doesn’t speak up a lot and IMO other than Joel he’s my Obi Wan of the MST3K group. He’s got a great sense of humor, gives great comments and….well, I just wish I could have heard more. The Mads are stopping in NC. It’s 2 1/2 hours from where I am but if I get a chance I’d love to see them. And as I said in an earlier post, I’d love to have the Mads and the Rifftrax guys join for a night. Love some Crow on Crow action, and Bobo and TV’s Frank action too. :)

Pretty sure it was chili, but like myself more often than not, Joel forgot to get a spoon.

i dunno, some places make chili like it’s soup, has been my experience… if it’s thin enough, can drink it like a soup, it seems, till you get to the bottom. (like a good coffee, eh heh? ;) “i’m not happy till the spoon’s standing straight up!”)

i greatly enjoyed their sharing the presser for us home-bodies… though the rt/mst show turned out to be showing here, i just don’t get out to evening shows at all anymore (i just don’t trust my dodgy car to not break down after dark). i’ll catch the show someday! anyway, there was lots of neat bits to glean from the presser…

    1) joel teaches the importance of brevity, at least a couple times… asked some sort of “deep” question that would’ve needed more time than allowed to either a) respond to every single detail of a “good” question, or b) explain why the question asked wasn’t quite on-the-mark, and then go over the question they -thought- they were asking in the first place… then well, just go “-no, never mind, i don’t really know what i’m talking about…” ;0 and i don’t want to take away time from the others, and if that’s an important question to you, we can continue talking about it in the lobby afterwards. :)

    2) frank (and bridget offered the other angle) on the “riffing is -not- film critique” was on-the-mark too… and a good defensive position (of course!) for them to have had all along. even as they have often done, during riffing, cackling, heckling, and yelling at the acting, or the credits onscreen, it was never meant to -really, really- mean “we wish you hadn’t made this movie”. because, obviously!, they wouldn’t have had any fun (or even a job) doing so, if the bad movie hadn’t existed.

the very meaning of “riffing simply being for anyone who’s ever paid to go into a movie they thought they wanted to see, and then see something entirely something else that entirely fails to live up to their expectations”… well, when ya start thinking about this line of thinking, it all spells itself out pretty well. no cast/crew ever goes into a movie -wishing- for its failure, but, they might sure well realize it going into it, let alone during it… or even finish the dang thing, thinking (or at least hoping) they’ve made a hit, and find instead they have an audience/critical failure. ;0 their meal-ticket to fame+fortune? “HAH! boo; you’re not even a ‘one-hit wonder’ babay… enjoy null-residuals from that one for the rest of your life, nanny-nanny-nah-nah!” say the movie studios.

but then, only then to find that film might have a bit of a second life, if only for making fun of the damn thang, heh! :) the riffing crew(s) aren’t here to critique what film was created… only to endure it. ;0

    3) and, “manos,” of -course- that one had to come up… ;0 i can only imagine what it’s like for them now, since joel expressly (and the others seem to implicitely) wonder, as if they were waiters in a restaurant once upon a time, why do we keep going on about that order of cheesesticks they served us over twenty-five years ago now?!? ;0

lately i had thought about the old joke/line from the seventies or so – “i don’t like porn; i just like really bad jazz…” ;0 well, there is that element to manos that serves the whole “crow’s snuff film” vibe to it. ;0 lol – well if anything i can say, i have a cow pasture about twenty or thirty feet from my window, and when the tv’s turned up playing my bluray of the restoration, the cows seem to want to hang out nearby… i guess cows are into bad jazz too!

well, sometimes the answer to “bad jazz” is “MORE bad jazz,” and that’s what the crew did back then, in a big way… the mst version of it just seems to be about as perfect as they ever got with “timing” on delivery. (stuff like how “slugbug!”-“OW!” go over, is just a little tingly bit of geeky-kid “awesomeness” they did back then.) sometime soon i should check out the RT version (“lil’ debbie” jackie said that was her favorite in an interview before, so i should check it out – btw, happy belated birthday jackie! :)

think i’ll put that presser back on to enjoy another time; that was all just from one viewing the day it got posted… i’ll probably get more out of it again a second time, just like i do the old epis. :) well so anyhow (trying to learn from joel’s brevity! ;), for now, summations of thought regarding the reunion presser video… end of line! :)

Agreed. I’ve always considered Trace to be the Ray Manzarek, if you will, of the Best Brains crew.
