UPDATE: Shout officials have informed us that, yes, the “Atomic Brain” stinger WILL be included.
September 27 to exact. MSRP: $44.99. Includes: The SideHackers, The Unearthly, The Atomic Brain and Shorts, Vol. 2.
Pre-order from Shout, get it shipped two weeks early.
Thanks to Paul for the heads up.
I don’t see any signs of special features. That’s a pity.

Given that they have yet to disclose the special features on Volume 36, which comes out in late July (late June if you preorder), it’s possible that any special features slated for this set have yet to be finalized. Given that Volume 2 only had the MST Hour wraps, don’t expect much for this, but there probably will at least be something.

Well, I guess it was asking too much to want something to replace the Shorts compilation, since some (most?) have seen their episodes properly released by now. That being said, the Rhino version had no extras at all, so I’m sure Shout! will come up with something to sweeten the pot and entice reluctant customers to double dip.
Goodness knows there’s probably a documentary that could be made about the grungy biker film trilogy.
Were any of these used on the MST3K hour?

Not sure if any of these were used for the MST Hour, but the Rhino set included additional takes of the host sequences as extras.

Indeed, and I’d like those carried over. They weren’t funny but they were fascinating.

“The Unearthly” was used in the MST3K hour. The other two were not.
One other thing to note is that this set will probably have the “Turn down your lights…” or “Reel one” screens restored before the episodes that should have them. Shout! started including them in their releases around the time the Gamera set was released I believe. Before that point neither Rhino or Shout! had included them. It’s not much, but it does make the episodes more “complete”.
No matter what, the more episodes that are currently in print the better, and I will be double dipping to support Shout’s efforts to keep as many episodes in print as possible.

I’m probably one of the few who count Sidehackers as one of my very favorite shows, so I’m overjoyed to see that they’re doing this and will definitely be buying this. The Rhino set included outtakes of the host segments that were in pristine condition…better even than the prints of some season three releases like #308, weirdly enough…I’ve never seen material like that included on dvd since, I wonder where it came from and if we’ll ever see any again?

We had a Crown Pictures documentary, IIRC, what volume was that on?…Wait, didn’t we?

Speaking of complete episodes, I wonder if we’ll get the stinger for The Atomic Brain.

I might stop with this volume as far as re-releases of the Rhino sets go. I could go for a volume 4 & 5 if the Mike Nelson intros were separated from the episodes..

So this one should include (at least):
The Unearthly MST3K Hour Wraps
Restored bumpers (including Atomic Brain’s missing stinger [reinstated on the Shout! Select release a few years back])
Extra Footage (ported over from the original Vol. 3)
Pretty good. I’m waiting until the zero hour to see if Barnes & Noble have the under $30 price tag…
And count me as a Sidehackers aficionado also!

Actually, yes. Then it’s not Volume 3 any more. That’s kinda how it works.

I am glad to see Volume 3 reissued since I missed out on it in the Rhino days. A benefit of having the shorts collected together on a disk is that it makes MST more palatable to newbies. You can show or all.

Well, it could have been like what happened with Volume 10 where we got Volume 10.1.
Believe me, I didn’t mean to come across as bitter and I’m not saying this is a dealbreaker. I was only thinking it might have been a way to get one of the OOP Rhino single discs (like ‘I Accuse My Parents’ or ‘The Hellcats’) back in release. Shout! seems to have moved away from single-episode releases (at least for physical media) so I’m concerned whether those episodes will be re-issued.
I agree with Jay’s point about the shorts compilation being a good ‘jumping-on’ point for new fans. I hadn’t taken that into consideration.

My guess is the remaining eight singles will be turned into the last two box sets. One being 2 Joel 2 Mike, the other being 3 Joel 1 Mike. The eight being Eegah, Beginning of the End, Hellcats, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians, Batwoman, Crawling Hand, I Accuse My Parents and Red Zone Cuba.

Did anyone ask on the Shout! message board / social media if the Rhino extras will be included in Volume 3’s re-release?
Yes! Sidehackers abd shorts vol 2 are the only formally released discs that I don’t have official copies of! So, I’m getting this no matter what.
Actually, I’ll likely buy any other volume Shout re-releases from here on out. Mostly because my OCD likes the starfield artwork on the Shout discs better than the random art on each Rhino disc. And if there are new special features, that’s just icing on the cake.

Volumes 1 and 2 are both fantastic sets. Volume 3, unfortunately, was the first big disappointment. While The Sidehackers is above-average, the other two movies included in the set are dreadful, awful bores. The Shorts collection is nice, but it’s relatively less nice now that so many of the episodes featuring those shorts are available in other sets. Were it not for The Sidehackers, I’d call Volume 3 a “for completionists/collectors only” set.

I am so very pleased that Shout is continuing in this regard.
This may be difficult for some to accept, but it is not Shout’s goal to persuade fans to double dip.
The re-issues are being made available for a very obvious reason. I say obvious, but that reason still seems to elude many.
The Obvious Reason: Making as many episodes available and as affordable on DVD as possible; both to new fans and/or fans who did not purchase the Rhino sets. There’s going to be a surge of demand for all episodes when the revival takes command. I praise Shout’s forward momentum to answer that demand.
But Shout can’t really win with the complainers. It’s a double bind.
If they added extras, the Rhino volume owners complain that they have to double dip to get the extras. (I’ve seen that exact complaint on this site.) But if Shout, God forbid, only provides the actual episodes as included in the previous issues of that volume, then they aren’t giving enough extras.
(“Sadly” “Pity” “I’ll pass” and other troll bait words are used.)
I’ve also seen people here complain about TOO MANY extras on the NEW volumes! That was sheer idiocy. I stopped coming here for six months after that experience. I realized I was in a den of idiots. But that is unfortunate, because I like to read the news items. But sometimes, I can’t help myself and read the “comments.” Mistake.
Luckily, Shout is appealing to the more sane fans, than to the petty cliques who are always coming here to complain about Mike or Joel or lack of extras and other minutiae that makes my skin crawl.
Stop acting like spoiled children.
Some you MUST be in your 50s and 60s and yet are basically trolling a fan site.
Here’s a thought: Send your complaints and concerns directly to Shout for a change, because I, along with many many many others who only read and lurk here, are tired of all wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Lovely.
My experience here has been mostly fantastic. Just because a few people (and it is very few) make a comment you don’t like doesn’t mean we’re all “idiots”. Goodbye.

In Cherry2000’s defense, I don’t believe s/he meant *everyone* here is an idiot.
And Cherry2000 is right, anyway. It’s annoying when people complain about Shout re-releasing the Rhino-era volumes. I own all the Rhino DVDs (except for the 2001 ‘Manos’ single disk) but I’d rather forego new bonus features than deprive other–perhaps newer–MSTies from having an opportunity to buy official DVDs of the ones they missed from Rhino. Good for them, and thanks to Shout Factory for helping out those fans fill in some of the gaps in their collection.

With the insane amount of love that Space Mutiny gets, a reissue of Vol. 4 should sell like hotcakes

Provided the reissue includes an interview with Buck Hardcheese.

I question the idea that folks are complaining. To me that would mean people are saying “This is a bad product and not only will I not buy it, no one else should buy it either.”
Yes, there have been some that say they will pass on this collection for one reason or another (bonus features, lack of bonus features, or the episodes themselves just aren’t someone’s particular cup of tea), but I’ve not seen anyone presume to speak for anyone but themselves. Further, unless I’m just not looking hard enough, the number of people who choose to deprive themselves are far outnumbered by those who support Shout implicitly.
Besides, I highly doubt that Shout! is ultimately basing their decisions of what to release on what’s said here, whether positive or negative.
That being said, whatever form they take, I want Shout to continue these reissues. Personally, I hoping they manage to work up to Volume 9 (which I missed and now cannot afford to buy) so those films can be properly cleared, released, and allow more fans (both old AND new) a chance to own them.

Actually yes there is a way to win. Make the extras. Go ahead and include them on the re-issues for those inclined to buy those and also sell a disc with JUST the extras for those who don’t want to double dip. In the case of disc with just the extras go ahead save them up and maybe release Volumes 1-5 on one disc to make it worth the pressing.
Seems like a pretty simple solution to me.

Personally I am glad Shout is releasing the old Rhino sets, I missed some of them the first time around and this will be great to be able to make my collection more complete. The stores near me rarely stocked MST3K DVD sets, but I did luck out getting the rear set with Godzilla at a Best Buy.

I think it’s more likely that future volumes after the next couple will be a blend of season 11 episodes, Rhino singles and existing episodes that they finally managed to obtain the rights to.
People will cry foul at being forced to double dip if they own the singles or contributed to the Kickstarter but it seems like they will need these types of stall tactics to get some of the strahglers out in the long run.

Unsung zero is right. I didn’t mean everyone here by any stretch. In fact, no one here is an idiot. I was using a figure of speech. It wasn’t the majority who were complaining and they were obviously intelligent.
“Den of idiots” was too harsh and vague of a thing for me to say.
I just grow weary of the fine tooth comb nitpicking. That’s all. It’s not that I am against differing opinions, but just this SPECIFIC THING, that NO MATTER what Shout does, someone complains.
Either they didn’t put the “right” episodes on the latest volume or they didn’t do a re issue “right” or whatever about the extras.
IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING. That is what is so MADDENING to me.
However, when in doubt, I should just read Sampo’s main article or link itself and not click on fan comments. And frankly, that’s usually what I do. Check in and see what the latest great news is, or the latest unfortunate R.I.P. news.
The downside is that I might miss the many expert fans here revealing interesting information related to either the topic at hand or MST3K in general.
It’s a tough call for me. To click or not to click to read fan comments.
I love what Chris and Brian have achieved with this website.
It is, in a word, simply “remarkable.”
And I will be an MST3K fan until I die.
And I apologize for the “idiots” comment. I’ve lurked here a very very long time and you guys know your MST3K forward and backward and I’m always learning new data.
It is simply a spike of negative nancys that sometimes get me riled up.
You know. Like when a beautiful new set comes out and someone quips, “I’ll pass.”
Grrrrrrr! I just want to slap my monitor. It’s totally OKAY if you want to pass on a purchase, but trust me, it’s NOT necessary to post every fleeting criticism that forms in your mind. You may not need that set, but there are multitudes of misties who do.
Thanks to everyone who understood what I was trying to say.
Back to lurking for this tired, nerdy woman.
I am greatly looking forward to the reunion.
May we all experience a safe and lovely event.

I can’t wait until Shout eventually re-releases vol. 9, since the original release now commands outrageous prices.

Most of the mistakes I make in my life have, of course, negative consequences to some degree. One of the few mistakes with a positive result was when I purchased a second copy of Volume 9 (this is before they pulled it). One day at work I was on the Amazon site, saw the set, thought I didn’t have it (and of course couldn’t check my library), so…I am the proud owner of two Volumes 9!

I wonder what will happen when they get to volume 10.
Will we see Godzilla or the Gila Monster in this future set? Or BOTH? I wonder…

Shout has worked some amazing miracles, but I doubt even they can persuade Toho to allow either Godzilla movie. Not only is Toho notoriously protective of the Godzilla copyright, I believe both movies used an older dub that they don’t want in circulation anymore.

Only Classic Media owns the 60’s dubs to the core Godzilla classics because they own Henry Saperstein/UPA which produced them. Megalon and Sea Monster weren’t in that group (which is how they ended up as PD and on the show in the first place), and Toho got them back.
Which explains why to hold onto your sets when they come out.
As to Cherry’s embattled comments, I agree that for Shout to put out the new sets isn’t “forced double-dipping” (oh, you should hear the paranoid Disney disk-fans sometime…), but just to get something OOP back in print again.
And if I say “Pass”, it’s more grumbling that those of us with the old sets can’t get in on the new-featurettes fun, or it isn’t cost-effective enough. Even if we did get a new Box 10 with extras, I wouldn’t be crazy enough to give up my old one.
(And wait, are we talking about Box 9–with WotPP and Incredibly Strange Creatures–or Box 10 with the replacement lizard, and can someone fill in what happened to 9?)

you guys do know that the stinger wasn’t the only thing missing from the old releases right (and that it was intact on Shout’s standalone DVD of this episode too)

Sadly, it’s a pity, but I’ll pass. There are way too many Joels in this set – he’s just not harsh enough on these films. He should completely sarcastically annihilate these wretched films that forced me to waste hours of my life watching them! And there are too many Mikes in this set – he’s much too harsh on these poor films that so many people worked so hard on. And don’t even get me started on the extras – A few MST Hour wraps and a stinger, and maybe some bumpers!!! Pathetic! :pain: For my money I expect a lot more extras if I’m going to double-dip. And I don’t appreciate having to spend money just to get a bunch of extras that didn’t appear on my original Rhino copy. They’re loading this set up with tons of extras just to make it irresistible to me, like I have money to burn! Die, Shout! Factory, Die!!!!!
P.S. Dear Shout! Factory, please release the Rhino set containing “The Dead Talk Back” with better video quality of that episode. The Rhino version was completely unwatchable. Die Rhino, Die!!!! Keep up the good work, Shout! Factory. :-D

I would also like to know the story behind Volume 9 getting yanked. That said, I’ll go home tonight and gaze adoringly at my mint-quality copies of volumes 9 and 10. Heh heh heh…

A few years ago I thought, when Shout! finally reaches the end of unreleased episodes, that’s when I’ll go back and start collecting the Rhino sets. But now that the reissues have started, Shout! beat me to the punch, so I’ll be picking up all of the reissues.
I can really tell the Shout! quality difference. Way more color than the Rhino copies, and a much improved, leveled audio track. Better than I remember it looking when it was on tv. And Shout! always has good consistency from set to set. The various episodes all feel very uniform.
I was buying 12 upgraded episodes a year, now I’m buying 20. But hey, it’s MST3K, I’m keeping these discs, and I watch them near constantly.
And we’re going to get 14 new episodes, too? Wow, that’s nice.

I know this is late coming, but I expected someone to mention the quality of the Volume I re-release and no one did.
Are there any glitches/dropouts, etc., such as ‘Jungle Goddess’ or the re-release of ‘Beginning of the End’ had?
I am thinking of buying it, but since I own the original release, I need to know beforehand.
Can anyone who has the Volume I re-release tell me what the quality is like?
