RIP William Schallert

william-schallert-pattyduke-3 Pacific Palisades, Calif.– Avuncular actor William Schallert, who guest-starred on just about any TV series you can think of, but was perhaps best known as TV dad Martin Lane on “The Patty Duke Show,” died at his home here May 8. He was 93. He was also a former president of the Screen Actor’s Guild.
MSTies will recall that he played (briefly) sheriff Scott Hood in the movie in episode 511- GUNSLINGER, a newscaster in the movie in episode 602- INVASION U.S.A. and Prof. Mills in the movie in episode K19- HANGAR 18.

Variety has the story.

Actually recognized him as Scott Hood before reading the full post. Good to see he had a long, full life outside of that film.

That’s mostly what I remember him for, but I also remember the Tribble episode. That was my favorite Star Trek episode ever. It’s sad, but it looks like he lived a good, long life. R.I.P.

And you might not have recognized him as Adm. Hargrove, the first Chief of CONTROL on “Get Smart”. He also had a nice, if atypical, guest shot as Earl Kibbee, CPA/Notary Public/Hired Killer in a later episode.

  7. The funny thing about William Schallert is, despite a rather clean-cut reputation as an actor, anyone who’s heard him in interviews knows he could drop f-bombs left and right without much thought.

    R.I.P. William.

I think William Schallert was in every television program that ever aired. He appeared on the original Twilight Zone, the 80s Zone, and the TZ movie – a nice little trifecta.

He was a member of the IMF in an episode of Mission Impossible: a heart surgeon working with the team during the first season.

And, of course, he was Nilz Baris on the original Star Trek.

Kirk: Mister Baris, [the tribbles] like you. Well, there’s no accounting for taste!”

    RIP, Mr. Schallert.

His last credit on IMDB was an episode of 2 Broke Girls in 2014. And his earliest was in 1947, in a movie called Doctor Jim. Quite a long career.

He also played Mr Pomfritt on “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis”, and Martin Short’s doctor in the movie “Innerspace”.

He was in one of my favorite episodes of Have Gun Will Travel as one of three men suspected of killing a rancher’s wife. Another suspect was James Best of Killer Shrews. Glad to see he lived such a full life. R.I.P.

God, this is so sad. I loved this guy. He literally was in EVERYTHING, and it’s fun watching movies and especially TV shows from the era and trying to find him. Sort of an I Spy for classic TV buffs. I first remember seeing him as a reverend on Here Come the Brides, in which he falls hopelessly in love with the most “matronly” of the 100 lovely ladies brought to the fledgling town of Seattle. Despite being the oldest of the bunch, and (it is later revealed) the mother of a troubled young boy, he proves the mysoginistic saw mill owner wrong by proposing to her. It was REALLY sweet. Great show.

This Saturday, my man Svengoolie will be showing one of my favorite films, The Incredible Shrinking Man. Schallert plays the doctor that examines the title character and delivers the most unusual prognosis. I will be watching it in his honor.

Rest in peace, William. You are truly a legend, and you will be missed.

    This man was AWESOME !!!

And for those of us who were around in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, it seemed as if he (eventually) showed up in just about every tv show known to mankind back then (Hardy Boy’s/ Nancy Drew Mysteries, anyone ???) !!!

They just don’t make ’em like Mr. Schallert anymore…… :-((

Once crowed the “Busiest man on television” by Nick-at-night.
He had cameos in Them! and Monolith Monsters, two of my favorite “classic” sci-fi films and over 370 credits on IMDB.
Someone I really wish I had met at the conventions I have attended, just to say “Thank you” for everything he did.
Even Border Hodges on the criminally under appreciated show “The Torkelsons.”

Ahhhhh… I’d forgotten he was in this:

google: “snl reach out and touch someone” should be on nbc.com’s web page. An absolute classic mock ad from SNL. :D
