Chanhassen, Minn. — Prince Rogers Nelson known to millions by his stage name Prince — songwriter, singer, producer, one-man studio band and consummate showman — died April 21 at home here. He was 57.
Best Brains writers and performers, fellow Minnesotans that they were, gently mocked and imitated him many times throughout MST3K’s history, most noticeably in episode 815- AGENT FOR H.A.R.M.
What I clumsily posted in the Daily:
Major Bummer. I’m a latecomer to Prince’s music, liked a song or two but just started listening deep in the last 5 years, and he is incredible. And yes, the crew did about a bajillion Prince riffs and references. R.I.P.

When I think of Minnesota, the first two things I think of are MST3K and Prince. I love the Agent for H.A.R.M. episode specifically for all the Prince references. And one of my favorite MST3K moments (I don’t remember the episode being shown but when Servo and Crow were getting married) is when Dr. F was officiating the wedding and did the “Dearly beloved…” part from Let’s Go Crazy.

Prince. Bowie. It’s not a good year. :-(

One Prince joke I remember is from, I think the short “What About Juvenile Delinquency”, and a big question mark appears on the screen…
Servo: “Must be Prince’s new name.”

That would be from he brilliant “Racket Girls” episode. Fitting, since that one’s about wrestling, and Chyna passed same day as Prince.

R.I.P. Prince. Loved all the Prince references on MST3K. If there’s a trinity of entertainment icons from Minnesota, it’s Prince, Garrison Keillor and MST3K, with an honorable mention for the home improvement show Hometime.

well to that i can only say this:

well, no, not the only thing i can say… one night back in the ninties, with free-showtime one weekend, they showed “dead man walking” and then “purple rain” in a row; the only time i’ve seen either of them. after the first one, i felt like if i were the type, i’d slash my wrists – but then i saw “purple rain”, and as treackley as it was, i felt like “well that’s better!” a bit – or really a lot – of melodrama… but there you go. (not like i would’ve, but damn, “dead man walking” is a tough flick to follow up.)

whatta guy… kinda in line with freddy mercury, in that he could lead a stadium+ sized audience in chorus; plenty more to the horizon, as far as the eyes can see… one of those truly fearless entertainers who could lead the world in song. they are blessed! (and i can remember when you couldn’t play prince on the school bus, just like the beastie boys!)

Weren’t the theater scenes from MST3K: The Movie filmed at Paisley Park?

My name, Bone Ranger, is a reference to a Prince song….anyone here know which one?

Such incredible talent has come from Minnesota, mainly Prince, Bob Dylan, and MST3K. Prince was arguably the most important musical artist of our time, perhaps second only to Frank Zappa. What a profound loss….even at 57 he had many more years of music left in him…..it’s a damn shame.

People who misuse the word “even” irritate the hell out of me.
“Even at 57”
If someone were 90 years old and croaked, yes… even at 90, he had more years of etc…
I’ve noticed dim witted ads and news anchors misuse this word as well… listen for it. It’s rampant.
Some of the asshat media also feels compelled to refer to his height when giving an overview of his work! (Standing at only… blah blah blah.)
Idiotic mentality.
Even Bone Ranger should knows better than to bring up how tall Prince was.
57 is by no means ancient and he was in better overall physical condition overall than most visiting here.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the COD was in ignoring medical treatment according to insane Jehovah’s Witness doctrine.
We’ll cause of death soon.
Meanwhile, my guitar gently weeps at this announcement.
What a black, stupid, effed up day.
A PERFECT time to watch a favorite episode of MST3K and change gears.

The very first episode I ever saw, Robot Holocaust, referenced one of his songs.
“This is what it sounds like when bulbs cry.” – Crow T. Robot.

Also, the character of King Leo in Mike’s “Death Rat” novel is a parody of Prince. If I remember correctly, it was a reasonably affectionate takeoff, compared to the character that spoofed Garrison Keillor.

So last night I was kicking back with my just-purchased Cat-Women of the Moon from Rifftrax, and, you guessed it, a Prince riff. However, it’s early here now, I haven’t had enough coffee, and I can’t remember it verbatim.
Sampo — perhaps a WDT — your favorite Prince or David Bowie riffs?

What a hateful, crass post which also misses the mark. As Joel once said in response to a Prince riff by Tom, “That’s a reach.” I know they get riffed on the show quite a bit but I have very close family members who are Jehovah’s Witnesses, they are very kind people and they also have a sense of humor, and they LOVE MST3K, I once watched the Horror of Party Beach with them during s break at a family get together and I’m telling you they about fell out of their chairs laughing over the “Jehovah’s Monsters! Please take a Watchmonster!” riff during the slumber party scene (they also love the Far Side, and Monty Python to name a few more). They don’t celebrate Christmas but they still join us for other family gatherings and we don’t hold that against them not just because they’re our family, but also because we wouldn’t hold that against other faiths which don’t celebrate Christmas.
Second, the only medical treatment a Jehovah’s Witness will refuse is a procedure involving either whole blood or whole blood components like plasma (due to the very sacred view of blood outlined both in the Mosaic law, Acts chapter 15 and their faith in the sacrificial value of Jesus’ blood). A JW may even accept certain blood fragments in their treatment if it doesn’t bother the individual’s conscience. JWs encourage healthy eating, moderate drinking and regular doctor visits. A Jehovah’s Witness can also be a doctor and practice both medicine and surgery, again, as long as it doesn’t involve blood due to their strict adherence to the spiritual value of Jesus’ blood.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are also major advocates for modern medicine, in decades past they even worked with Johns Hopkins University in the influence and creation of the university’s Center For Bloodless Medicine and Surgery. Found some more info about this here on the Johns Hopkins resource site and a lengthy article from the New Yorker last year about the impact they have had on modern medicine:

Yes, Prince was a Jehovah’s Witness (he said in multiple interviews he converted after studying with his friend Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone who is also a devout member). Just because both he and his faith were viewed as “out of the norm” shouldn’t be any reason to slight him or his chosen religion as “insane.”
Also, JWs have won multiple cases in the Supreme Court which have helped uphold both freedom of speech and religion in the country for what it’s worth. Not a bad contribution I’d say by a group riffed on one of the best shows of all time which also thanks the authors of the First Amendment at the end of every episode. I also never felt like the show was trying to single JWs out in a mean spirited way because there are plenty of jokes on the show that poke fun at quirks in Catholic and Lutheran culture as well.
This is my only post on this, not trying to start a religious discussion, but Prince is dead, his music was awesome, let’s maybe not make silly Elvis style conspiracy theories about his death, think about it won’t you?

I recall reading a theory that virtually every episode had a reference to The Wizard Of Oz, but is it possible that every episode may have a Prince-related riff?

1999 and Purple Rain were big at my Jr. High. Kinda lost interest in his music after that. The 80’s were an innocent time when we thought that Michael Jackson was less strange than Prince. We were wrong.
