Good interview overall. I particularly like how Joel pointed out that the rise of mom and pop video stores was kind of the pre-Netflix when people suddenly realized they no longer had to watch standard TV with all the choices open to them.

Worth noting: Joel says that they start working on the new season on January 4th, with a planned premiere date “sometime in the fall”. He hopes to have a preview reel by July.

    SO. EXCITED.

Wow. This just makes me more excited than ever, and more glad I backed it.

Joel addresses two of my concerns when he talks about how he is patterning the new show after the 30 or so episodes everyone agrees are the “best” of MST3K AND how you really can’t riff “Sharknado” because it’s already a self-referential comedy (he doesn’t put it in those terms but that’s what he means).

What’s interesting (and not to start ANY kind of war here) was that I was always a more of a “Mike” type guy in that I came to MST3K about a year before Joel left and then was there for the entire Mike run. While I have (now) seen the early episodes many times, my belief was that as head writer Mike brought the right sensibilities to the show.

But the more I hear from Joel the more I think he “gets it” in a way… well, I’m not going to go there but let’s just say that I could not be a bigger fan of his than I am now. I am so positive the reboot will be on point I am not even going to worry about it one bit.

    Go Joel!

I wonder what those 30 episodes “everyone” agrees on are. Because I’ve never seen that kind of solidarity in MSTies. Sampo’s Theorem, and all.

Well, Manos and Mitchell are definitely in there. I’ve never heard anyone complain about either of those.

Droppo’ I would really almost 100% agree with your “just kidding” list with maybe ONE exception (Boggy Creek) so 29 out of 30 ain’t bad!! :-)

I really hope the new show gets to the UK and when people start raving about it i can point to the DVD shelf and smile knowingly (and maybe nod my head and stroke my chin too).

I don’t think it’s half as important as *which* 30 episodes Joel thinks are the classics as that he has given it some thought at all. He’s approaching this reboot with a careful, considered attempt to please people who loved the original and that speaks volumes to me about my worries I wouldn’t like it.

It’s likely that both RT and CT made a conscious attempt NOT to be too on point to MST3K and I think that led them (but particularly the new kids at RT, like Conor) into areas that weren’t the sort of thing I enjoy. And that’s okay — they were (and still are) carving out their own legacy and building their own fan base.

Whether Joel succeeds or not in capturing the spirit of the show all of us here loved at least he’s doing all the right things. I get a sense of authenticity from him that is very rare in this cynical age.

Wow! I’ll happily take that winning percentage.

OK, what if I swapped out Boggy Creek II and replaced it with….Gorgo?

I think Boggy Creek II is one of the best episodes, seriously.

There was one VERY important part of the interview that others haven’t commented on yet. In the interview, Joel says:

“We finally got the rights back about three months before the Kickstarter … so about four months ago. Shout! Factory are my equal partners on this, and I really felt like we had to go to the crowdfunding [route] and tell fans what’s happening.”

So it sounds like both Joel AND Shout Factory co-own MST3K. Now it’s possible that what Joel meant was that they are co-owners of the NEW MST episodes. But, to me, this explains a lot.

I think Joel will be the creative end of the new show, and Shout will get the rights to the films they use and put them out on DVD, digital downloads, etc, and they share the profits.

If Joel is co-owner of the old series, that could explain why Rifftrax is now allowed to sell digital downloads of the Mike episodes. Why would Shout care if Mike & the original crew get any residuals from the show?

Joel, on the other hand, worked hand in hand with these original creators of the show, and would want them to share in any future profits from those old shows.

God, I hate Manos. I know it’s iconic, but it is so tedious. It’s just that, unlike EricJ, I focus my attention on the good and beautiful in life.

Agreed. While there’s no exact formula for picking an episode that’s going to be a winner, and they certainly couldn’t have predicted which episodes would be most beloved when they made the original show, there’s now 16-26 years of hindsight to figure out a consensus of what episodes are the best and figure out what elements they have in common.

Joel’s listed a few of them in his interviews and Q&A’s over the last couple months: it’s got to have a story, comedies usually don’t work, it should have a lot of dialogue, the audience shouldn’t already be familiar with it, etc.

Depends a lot on the movie, I think. There are movies (Rifftrax’s Giant Spider Invasion, CT’s The Alien Factor) that really do feel like vintage MST3K, at least IMO. I think they probably match a lot of those “What makes a classic MST3K episode?” variables.
