Joel’s ‘Final Countdown’ Live Streaming Event Tonight

With only 12 hours left in the campaign to #BringBackMST3K, Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson will host a very special livestreaming event, “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Final Countdown” starting tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/ 5 p.m. Pacific.

    Hey Sampo,
    This may have been asked elsewhere, but will Satellite news continue to cover the new series with episode guide entries and such or will it remain a classic mst3k site with occasional news about the new series? Just curious, love the site either way!

    Thanks!

    Thanks for asking. This site covers all the current professional endeavors of former cast members (at least the ones we know about) and Joel is a former cast member, so we will cover what he’s doing. The details of how we’ll cover it are being worked out.

    I sure hope so, because that’s how I was planning to watch it. Just navigate to the official MST3K page.

    They’re pretty close to reaching the $5.5 million mark now. Joel has added the addition challenge that if they reach $5.9 million to break the crowdfunding record set by Veronica Mars, they will also do a holiday special for a grand total of 13 episodes.

    there are people i follow on twitter who are making fun of joel and the campaign and i wish i were even half as funny and creative about it as they are. instead i just make bitter, unfunny statements about people involved with the revival who i don’t like. OH WELL.

    good luck with your new season, folks!

    This telethon is going to need Mike’s old plinky keyboard background music like when Joel demonstrated the back-talk in episode 510.

  14. Whether the new season is referred to as Season 11 or Series 1 (like Doctor Who) or something will be up to Joel, I think. No matter what, I certainly think Satellite News should cover it like any other season. Doctor Who web sites didn’t stick to the classic show and treat the new series as just another spin-off project. MST3K is MST3K. I understand (and agree with) not covering RiffTrax, Cinematic Titanic, etc. in the same depth as the show, but this is not just a “professional endeavor” of a “former cast member”. This is MST3K.

    That’s debatable at this point. What was MST3K and what the new show will be at the moment look like really different animals. Although I’d agree that it should covered in depth on this site.

    I don’t think it is. This isn’t like the new “Battlestar Galactica”, that featured no involvement of the original creators and jettisoned everything that came before. This is the next season of MST3K from Joel Hodgson. I don’t see how it can be considered anything else. I’ll make the Doctor Who comparison again. Very few people who worked on the old show worked on the revival for quite a while, but no one said it was a “different animal”, even though it used a completely different production structure, run time and style from what had come before.

    This season *will* be different. But, then again, 1013 – Diabolik is very different than K01 – Invaders from the Deep. But they’re the same show.

    mnenoch: That’s debatable at this point.

    Well, no, it really isn’t. The new show is MST3K. That is the title of the show. (Or the abbreviation thereof, if you want to get technical about it.)

    If people say “It’s not the same show as it was before,” okay, that’s debatable. If people say “It’s not MST3K,” well, no, that’s not debatable, it’s just wrong.

    Thomas:
    Here’s hoping someone makes a Best of the Telethon video, because they are having a lot of problems. Ha.

    So far the telethon has:

    * Started 20 minutes late;
    * Had trouble getting an audio feed from the Frozen guy;
    * Had horrible, deafening static on Patton Oswalt’s mic;
    * Had trouble getting an audio feed from Jonah Ray;
    * Lost the feed from Jonah Ray;
    * Not actually updated the money counter at the bottom of the screen even once in the hour it’s been running.

    It is mostly Joel and Special Guests sitting there awkwardly and asking if things are working yet.

    But like I said before, I kind of love it. If I didn’t enjoy watching people try and fail to produce technically-competent video content, I wouldn’t be an MST3K fan.

    On the plus side, according to the counter on Kickstarter (which is not an hour behind), we’re up around $5.83M, with nearly 4 hours to go. $5.9M is looking very likely now.

    (Also looking likely: nobody on the telethon will even know when it passes $5.9M.)

    @megaweapon: I didn’t care much for his Shatner bit but I liked the routine about his father coming home drunk at 3 AM and singing.

    Great makeup, too.

    I wasn’t previously aware of Game Grumps/Ninja Sex Party but I’ve enjoyed their segments. And I’ve always liked the lady from Garfunkel and Oates.

    I really do hope somebody’s snatching this whole thing. Liable to be tricky since it keeps going down.

    I missed most of this, and unfortunately most of what I was able to see were the train-wreck parts. ;)
    I have a sense it got better later, though. I’m going to scan through the youtube vid as I have time.

    Here are my favorites:

    Patton Oswalt reading and responding to tweets: 1:05
    Kate Micucci’s song, and Joel finds out they’ve passed $5.9M: 2:01
    Game Grumps and Crow riff Manos: the Game: 2:13
    Starbomb sing about Castlevania: 2:54
    Bobby Lopez sings a song to $5,000 backers: 4:00
    The final push: 4:10

    I watched the entire telethon from beginning to end. I’ve had all night to think about it, and I’ve concluded that it was perfect, just as it was. It was delightfully weird in all the right spots, and even the technical issues somehow gave it an intimate quality that was very much in keeping with the spirit of the original show. During Joel’s years in particular, sometimes somebody would flub a line, or something would go wrong during an elaborate skit, or Servo’s head would fall off, or somebody would sneeze in the theater, and they just soldiered on and we loved them for it. The telethon felt a lot like that, at least to me.

    If nothing else, it also gave the on-air personalities a chance to show off their improvisational talents! Joel, Paul & Storm, and especially Patton Oswalt did an admirable job of keeping the show going under a lot of pressure!

    In addition to the highlights that Thad mentions, I was very pleased to see Ashley Holtgraver again. I hated that her audio wasn’t working and that she got cut off, but I liked Freezepop’s studio performance of Ashley’s MST3K song from the Turkey Day marathon. I hope both versions are somehow made available for download.

    My favorite moment was probably the last few minutes, when we crossed $6.3M just in the nick of time, and seeing Joel’s flabbergasted reaction LIVE.

    Dana Gould doing Shatner as Dr. Zaius was pretty outstanding too. That was in hour 3 or 4?

  43. John Seavey says:

    The telethon was wonderful. The technical issues felt strangely right for a show that has always been about comedians kitbashing together impromptu brilliance out of things they found lying around, and watching everyone joke about the malfunctions reminded me what great improvisers these guys really are. (I think it was Paul and Storm who said, “That’s right, folks, this just goes to show you that every single penny we’re raising is going straight to the show.”)

    The comedians and magic acts were great, too–who was the magician who did the trick with the Sherlock Holmes book? I don’t remember his name, now, but he was amazing. Like watching Garth Marenghi do stage magic. And Dana Gould’s Shatner/Zaius bit kills.

    And the songs, and Felicia Day talking about feeding you baby bird style, and Patton Oswalt reading tweets (that should be the spin-off: “Patton Oswalt Reads Tweets About Last Week’s Episode”)…it was glorious. A glorious, wonderful mess, and I was glad to be there for it.

    I’ll always remember the telethon, that’s for sure! At first I was annoyed that it didn’t start on time, but I got on twitter and started laughing at people’s tweets, and enjoyed that. I ended up watching the whole thing! Every glitch and sound drop out. At the end when Joel put on his Gizmonics jumpsuit I got a little misty (or should I say mistie?) I went to bed with a smile on my face that MST3K is coming back.

    This bodes well.

    That Castlevania song was god-awful. I think it was the jokey accents that made it particularly bad. The riffing of the Manos game wasn’t too bad, though.
