Dang, that is an amazing line-up. Hopefully they’ll get a few of them to do guest voices, since Wayne and Pen at least have done a few characters on their respective shows.

Man, the talent is just flowing in like no one’s business! Adventure Time and Steven Universe are two of the best looking shows on television, so having Rebecca Sugar and Pen Ward on board can only mean good things.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a contributor and looking forward to the new MST3K but…

I’m getting a bit concerned about “staff bloat”. With the new cast, huge group of writers, and a set of visual artists, will the new version have a consistent “voice” (or “look and feel”)? It seems like in the earlier version there was a much smaller group of talented folks that doubled (or tripled) up on their roles to do a lot of this themselves. Between Joel and Mike as Head Writer, they had a manageable project that produced consistent results.

I assume in the new version Joel will be both the Head Writer and the Executive Producer and as such will try to ensure that they do the same. I have the utmost respect for Joel, but leading a platoon and leading an army requires somewhat different skill sets. I hope Joel is up to the task!

  8. Here’s something that’s puzzling me. Crow and Tom are having separate voice actors AND puppeteers? I don’t see that really working out…… the new voice actors will have to essentially loop their lines and have them fit with the mouth movements the other puppeteers made. Doing something like this can affect one’s vocal performance. That really has me concerned.

These same puppeteers did all the work for Turkey Day ’14 with Trace and Josh only voicing. And it worked just fine.

I’d have to assume Baron and Hampton will be puppeteering them once they actually get the show running… Crow and Tom aren’t exactly difficult puppets to manipulate… and Trace, Kevin and Bill did such an amazing job bringing life to these characters. Especially Trace… I was rewatching a Season Six episode and goddamn.

I’m also concerned about too many cooks in the kitchen. This is an amazing lot of talent…. but the show basically did really well before with just eight writers and a three or four person art department. On some of the most memorable episodes like Final Sacrifice they were even understaffed. Maybe they’re planning on just having some spectacular moments in the host segments when they bring in Wayne White or Rebecca Sugar or whoever to do something fun… or have a spectacular first episode that surpasses MST3K: The Movie. From the art I sort of imagine they’re going to do something animated to explain how Tom and Crow ended up back in outer space.

But in the end I hope they’re realize they’re a puppet show making fun of a crappy movie. It doesn’t have to be Spiderman: The Musical or look like Blade Runner. And I’d really like to see Frank and Trace come back! Even if just for a little bit.

Have to agree about staff bloat possibility… Too many cooks in the kitchen? The original mst3000 was a single person with 5 different hats to labor at
