Final Countdown Commences at 5 pm on

Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles

Calling all MST-ies: it’s the final countdown! For the past three weeks, MST3K fans old and new have taken up the rallying cry of “Keep Circulating the URL”, raising more than $3.8 million and guaranteeing at least six brand new, feature-length episodes of the award-winning comedy television series Mystery Science Theater 3000. As the Kickstarter campaign to #BringBackMST3K comes to a close on December 11th, and needing to raise an additional $1.7 million to fund a full season of 12 episodes, MST3K creator Joel Hodgson will host a very special event, “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Final Countdown! A Livestreaming Telethon with Joel Hodgson & Friends to Help #BringBackMST3K. ” Powered by the XSN, the Internet’s home to discover, buy and sell collectables, the telethon will be hosted at the legendary epicenter of cool, Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles.

Starting at 5 pm PT on Friday, December 11th , Hodgson will welcome a cavalcade of celebrity friends and supporters for an evening of laughs, music, magic, special offers, and MST3K memories as they join forces to ensure the campaign meets its ultimate goal of $5.5 million to produce a full season of 12 episodes. Along with special guest hosts, w00tstock founders and musicians Paul & Storm, the telethon will include in-person and video appearances from Felicia Day, Jonah Ray, Hampton Yount, Patton Oswalt, Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, Robert Lopez, Pendleton Ward, Dana Gould, Steve Zaragoza, Freezepop, Starbomb, Master Pancake, John Carney, Michael Carbonaro, Derek Hughes, Game Grumps, and many more!

Fans will be able to participate in the festivities by tuning into the livestream of the event at MST3K.com/FinalCountdown and The Official MST3K YouTube Channel, and join in the conversation on social media using the hashtag #BringBackMST3K.

While Hodgson will be involved in writing and all facets of production of the new series, MST3K’s new episodes will feature comedian Jonah Ray as the next host “Jonah Heston”, actress and comedian Felicia Day as the next Mad “Kinga Forrester”, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt as the next evil henchman “TV’s Son of TV’s Frank”, comedians Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount as the newest voices of “Tom Servo” and “Crow T. Robot”, and of course, new cheesy movies to riff.

This is just fitting. Exactly how this Kickstarter should end. :)

(Servo enters in clown outfit, with giant check)
Crow: “And here comes Ronald McDonald, with another check for–”
Joel: “Uh, actually, Crow, we’re just taking Kickstarters off the net, they’re not really sending in checks.”

Will there be a big tote board? Will Joel ask for a tympani roll before they put up the latest totals? Will the orchestra kick into “What the World Needs Now” when the numbers go up? Will Joel wear a tux with the tie pulled loose?

I have no idea if this is even possible with KS, but as someone who worked telethons in the past I can tell you that they are always rigged to the extent that big donations (which they’ve known about for many months in advance) magically “come in” near the end in order to bump the totals up (and, of course, keep people excited enough to donate themselves).

If this is even *slightly* the case here (let’s say that Shout has a few bucks up their sleeves they want to push in) they may very well reach the final total Joel is looking for (without those sort of tricks I don’t think it’s possible).

It will be fun to look in from time to time (we have company for a couple of hours that night but I’ll be able to watch the final hours).

I’m trying to resist the urge to leave work early to catch the beginning. It would probably be wiser to just connect and then move the feed back to the beginning.

KS campaigns always have a big push during the last 2 or 3 days, regardless of any conspiracy theories or telethons. Yes, I bet in a case like this, there are some special big last minute contributions lined up for the telethon, but there is almost always a level of excitement at the ground level at the very end, so I would say that things are looking good.

“Hate to interrupt, but we’ve had a request for the band, from a contributor who phoned in saying he’ll pledge $1K if Joel shouts ‘Rowsdower!'”

(Seriously, I want to see Crow show the results of the Backyard Carnival for Kickstarter he’d put together, and the mail-in kits for home.

Don’t forget the International Association of Fire Fighters. We should get them to chip in a few million. :)

I looked back at the MDA’s 990s a few years back to find – to absolute no surprise whatsoever – that they only convert 50-70% of tote board pledges into actual donations. At least with the KS the pledge is backed by a credit card so one would have to go in and cancel the pledge by the deadline.

A telethon, eh? Maybe this means that they’ll announce “The Day the Clown Cried” as the riffed film for the first new episode.

(N.b. Of course not, but that would be amazing. I’d settled for “Zardoz”.)

At the intersection outside the event maybe some female firefighters, dressed in furry bikinis, can collect donations in gold boots?
