The CW23 Twin Cities, descendant of KTMA-TV 23, has revived the holiday “Melon Drop” and this year has even brought back its old host, Bob Bagadonuts. Kevin Murphy is on hand to discuss the resurrection.

Thanks to Toby Mobias and Grady Daub for the tips!
Funny how this is reminiscent of my first TV job, working at a station with no budget (or news for that matter), and since the call letters were KNIN, our “anchors” were dog names. The head anchor was Rot Wyler, and we had some other anchors but I forgot their names because they didn’t last long as Rot became the only mascot. I got to play “Mala Mute” for some science thing they did, which may or may not exist on 1″ tape somewhere. Surprisingly our little station launched some careers too. The Rot Wyler guy (Brad Rowen) is doing his own thing now and has been pretty successful at it, though you may or may not have heard of him depending on your circles. The promotions guy is producing and directing a lot of promotions at WWE and is very cool.
The station was purchased a few years ago and is now a Fox affiliate (was previously the WB/UPN affiliate before WB pulled programming in the 100+ markets, then later CW) and does news. It was an unique time then, but it will always be one of the best times, and would have easily made for a good sitcom.

Solid interview over at the MSTieCast. Makes Jonah come off as one of us regular fans.

I’m still hoping someone has a copy of the first Melon Drop (from, I believe, 1986) available. The next two were great, while the 1989 clip-show, not so much.

It might’ve been inspired by David Letterman, but that was well before his move to the Ed Sullivan. Back then he was still with NBC, doing Late Night at 30 Rock, but travelling to New Rochelle to drop stuff off a five story building.

I was always miffed that Jim Mallon didn’t make good on his promise to keep offering old KTMA clips back when he was updating mst3k.com with content, but I’ll always be grateful he made this available:

So, Kevin and Jim basically invented The Daily Show.

The current version of KTMA TV23, has posted all three original Melon Drop videos from the master tapes to their youtube page (plus the revival from last year), as well as the “15 minute” videos Kevin mentioned. Here are the links:

I’m listening to the show and I find it very encouraging to listen to Jonah. Some people are “fans” of a show but don’t really KNOW the show. Jonah clearly knows the show.

Just listened to the podcast. Is it just me or does Jonah’s voice kinda sound like Josh’s, only slightly higher pitched?

Good interview with Jonah Ray! One tidbit in particular jumped out at me: he was asked whether his character on the show is a descendant of Joel or Mike, and he said that he wasn’t … “but there is some stuff that’s going to be announced soon that will be awesome and blow you guys away … it has something to do with that other silhouette [the new Henchman] … when I found out about it, I couldn’t stop rejoicing and laughing. You’re going to hear about it and you’re going to go, ‘perfect!'”
Hmmmmm …
As for Melon Drop 2016, I suppose I need to check out the old Melon Drop videos from KTMA. It’s interesting to learn something about the creative projects beyond MST3K that Kevin Murphy and Jim Mallon were involved with. It’s nice to know that the people in that area still remember them, and that the ones who now work at The CW23 Twin Cities are aware of their “heritage” as the station that launched MST3K!

The other henchman silhouette looks suspiciously like Frank Conniff, but it’s possible I’m imagining things.

That’s awesome, I’ve been looking for those for a while.
Hang on a sec… if they have original masters from the KTMA days… does that mean they have the original masters for K01, K02, and K03?

I thought so, too, but Frank confirmed on Twitter that it isn’t him.

It’s probably Torgo

It’s been known for some time now that Jim Mallon had the original master tapes for every KTMA episode in his private collection. In an interview with him on this very site circa 2008, he was discussing his intention to get them transferred digitally, and it’s clear that happened because of the tiny (but pristine) clips from K01-K03 he had uploaded to the official site several years back.
The KTMA material is all safely archived and complete as far as I know. It’s a matter of rights and swallowing embarrassment.

Thanks for sharing, that’s absolutely hilarious! Even though since it was done in the ’80s I’m sure it’s referencing the Berlin Wall, it also reminds me of the Mexican-American border.

Looked on the kickstarter. It appears the new assistant is Patton Oswalt.

Kevin doesn’t need the fake beard to play Santa anymore.

I remember some years ago, i actually contacted CW23 about the lost KTMA episodes in a vain attempt to see if they had them. They didn’t, stating that Joel and Jim took everything when they left. One of the people there also said something to the effect of “We still own the copyrights to those”.

I work at the TV station now…and I am the one who posted the links above to the other archived items. We get contacted every few months by somebody looking for “the lost” MST3K episodes. We have gone through everything in our video library and even though there are many videos from those days still here, there just is no sign of any MST3K videos. I’m still hoping to uncover a box with some random promos, a highlight reel…something. But so far nothing. We had Kevin Murphy in the studio last week to record his portion of Melon Drop 2016 and we took him into the library to show him what we have recovered. He was a great guest. Good stories.
