Sweet, I missed Miami Connection. Perfecto.

From Rifftrax email:
“A significant share of the profits of all MST3k episodes sold on RiffTrax.com will be paid out directly to ALL principal cast members of MST – Mike, Joel, Kevin, Bill, Mary Jo, Trace, Frank, Josh and Bridget. We feel it’s important that the original artists benefit directly from their awesome work. So if you want to support them, buy your MST here on RiffTrax!”
I’m glad to hear that Rifftrax is sharing the wealth! There’s certainly an effort going to mend some old wounds.
I understand why Jim isn’t mentioned since he’s been making money off MST3K releases for years. But I wonder why Paul isn’t there. He was on camera as much as Bridget.

My first thought was: Bridget was a principal cast member??
But undoubtedly, it’s because Paul didn’t marry Mike.

Bridget appeared on camera multiple times over the years. Off the top of my head, I remember she played Mr. B. Natural, Adrienne Barbeau, Nuvena, one of the girls who visited Deep 13, and I know she appeared in the Sci-Fi Channel’s Season Eight storyline in multiple roles. I think she took on more roles (outside of the writing room) after Joel left the show. I guess you’d have to call her a supporting player like Paul Chaplin.

You know of all the people in the world to throw negative comments towards, it seems remarkably silly that Mike Nelson would be your target. Particularly on a MST3K fan site. The man has not only given us years of joy, but, has always been a total class act and incredibly warm to fans.
I don’t get you guys sometimes. I get skepticism in general, but, man. Same stuff with folks questioning Joel over the reboot.
Haven’t we reached a point (beyond Thunderdome) where we can maybe – just maybe – give these guys the benefit of the doubt?
Argh! (trips off soapbox and bonks head)

I have never understood why Paul Chaplin receives very little attention or mention regarding all things MST3K. He appeared in quite a few episodes and was a writer for a good portion of the series’ run. I hope he will be included along with everyone else who will benefit from the MST3K sales at Rifftrax.

That’s a great point. No one ever talks about Paul. He’s not on Twitter, he wasn’t involved in CT, he’s never been a part of Rifftrax and he’s never been mentioned in any talk of the reboot. No idea why as he seemed to be a significant contributor. He certainly was to the book and online episode guides. I always enjoyed him.

Paul Chaplin voiced Crow on the very short lived web cartoons on mst3k.com. He also worked with several MST3K alumni on Edward the Less. And he was at that big ComicCon reunion 6 years ago. But I really haven’t heard anything about him since then. Regardless, he was one of the main writers and certainly served his time both in front of and behind the camera. I just find it odd that he wasn’t mentioned.

Timmy Bobby Rusty!!!
THAT’S what the reboot needs!
(And I certainly hope Paul is doing OK.)

I wasn’t being the slightest bit negative towards Mike. Paul played his cards wrong. Or maybe… that’s why they don’t talk any more…?
I’m just going to assume you mixed up my silly little post with a delusional EricJ diatribe.

Yeah, I was curious about Paul’s lack of mention too. Like other posters have said, it’s like he vanished off the face of the Earth; it could be they legitimately don’t know how to reach him.
Mary Jo just tweeted a week ago that she wasn’t getting any share of Rifftrax’s MST3K sales, so it sounds like they’ve just hammered out some of the details over the past few days. Could still be a work in progress.

A recent tweet from Trace said everyone gets a cut, so Paul’s probably in the mix.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Paul started his own live riffing group made up of the likes of Colleen Henjum, Timothy Scott and David Sussman?

I’ve often wondered if Paul didn’t just go back to a day job when MST ended. His onscreen roles were great and he was always a core member in my mind. Still is. Maybe he’s made it clear he wants no part of this and doesn’t care what happens or maybe, like someone else said, he just disappeared into the background. He and Mike Dodge are the two biggest MSTeries we have. Lesson learned, let’s find Paul!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul did that. You do what you have to to pay the bills. I know Mike had to move out west when he couldn’t make enough money doing the funny in Minnesota. I believe Mary Jo also did voice-overs and writing workshops. The entertainment biz is a tough way to make a living full-time unless you’re in the upper echelons.

Yeah. Paul’s cool.

The beginning will be a little rocky, just like it was when they transitioned to the SyFy channel. The real key to the success of the new series doesn’t depend on the characters necessarily. But it does depend on how funny those first pilot episodes turn out to be. Writing will drive their success.

I gotta admit, despite being a fan of the show since the Sci-Fi years (I didn’t get Comedy Central) and visiting his site for at least 6, I had to look up Mr. Chaplin in Wikipedia and honest, that still didn’t ring any bells.

Paul Chaplin was such a prominent presence in the sketches towards the end of the Comedy Central run and in the Episode Guide (where it’s very clear that he’s a key writer on the series) that I honestly figured that he’d end up playing Crow when MST3K moved to Sci-Fi. I wonder if promises or assumptions were made in that regard given that he did end up playing Crow in Jim Mallon’s peculiar animated thing. Might explain why he’s never formed an affiliation with either “team” past his involvement with timmybighands.com (anyone else remember that?).

One of Paul’s best scenes as Observer:

Paul is hilarious in the Sci-Fi era, as both an Observer and one of the god-like children(among other appearances)

I will admit that we have lost track of Paul. The last time I saw him was at that big ComicCon panel. I specifically talked to him after it was over and asked him to stay in touch and he said he would — but alas he has faded away. Barbbb gave me an address she had a few years ago (I can’t find the email anymore, I will keep looking) but it was rigged with one of those anti-spam deals and I could never get through.
There’s a Paul Schersten (his real name) listed in whitepages.com at 5729 James Ave S. Minneapolis, MN 55419-1643.
Anybody got a Minneapolis phone book?

I don’t have a Minneapolis phone book, but since his address is listed maybe someone could send a letter?

Paul’s sketch as an Observer when he visits the SoL and has his face about 3″ from Mike’s face and goes on at length about how disgusted he is by him is probably one of my top 10 sketches ever on the show. Every time I watch it I cant figure out how they kept from breaking while filming/ how many takes were required….

My impression from reading his episode guide contributions is that he was a bit of a downer.
I love many of his on-screen appearances, including the one mentioned in #24.
I just got a real bitterness vibe from him, though. Maybe he’s really hard to work with and, even if he made genuinely funny contributions, they figured it wasn’t worth it.
How’s THAT for wild, baseless speculation?

Googling the address provides a phone number, along with the information that Timothy B. Hands LLC shares an address with Paul Schersten. (Also, I’m in Minneapolis, and do have a phone book, if you need any help.)

When I came to Minneapolis for the second convention I remember checking the phone book for MST-related names (I was obssessed), Paul Schersten being one of them. Luckily, common sense overcame my idiot teenager brain and I scrapped the idea of actually calling any of the numbers. A very wise decision on my part!
