Joel has answered 24 of your questions, and since you’ll be discussing his answers anyway, we figured there was no point in coming up with a different weekend discussion thread on top of it.

This was really cool ! Joel is such a nice & accommodating person. I consider myself fortunate to have met him and got some pics with him. I consider myself to be…the luckiest man…on the face of this Earth…
    Here’s to you Joel
    Happy 2009

I loved this batch of questions…good stuff. Thanks for opening it up to us, by the way, and letting the fans share a bit of the fun. ;3

I’m just going to be on my merry way because he answered my question. XD~

That worked. Some people at times will sort of answer while passing on questions. Joel hits right for the point and never disappoints. Thanks Joel.

Great questions, great answers. His response to the query about fan interaction was especially thought-provoking and frankly, just dead-on. I think we’ve all tried to impress the people who impress us with mixed (and occasionally disastrous) results, and it’s nice to see that Joel is so gracious and understanding about the whole thing.

Really, really interesting stuff about the evolution of MST3K into a film franchise as well.

What a guy! Thanks, Joel! And thanks Sampo for sending on our questions!

I really liked this as well, especially the honesty about the MST movie experience.

It was the right mix of humor, honesty and humbleness (the three H’s as I like to call them…actually I just made that up).

  8. Thanks, Sampo, for asking two of my questions (I feel honored :>) and thanks to Joel for answering them (as I suspected, he was much more verbose when it came to his current work than he was about the past).

Joel seems like a genuinely nice guy, and it’s always good for them to have success, so I feel doubly good about supporting his new efforts nowadays.

I actually did NOT know the origin of “I’m Huge!” Thanks for the great answers to the great questions, Joel! (I actually AM a professor, but I couldn’t come up with any good questions for Joel myself. I admire people who can ask great questions!)

  11. I was surprised, too, about the evolution of the movie. I’d always interpreted his comment at the time of his departure, “I don’t want to be a movie star,” as meaning he was down on the idea of the movie. Instead, he meant he wanted more of a creative role than to JUST be the star.

Great Q&A! Very informative. Although I’ve answered the subject of Question 20 (regarding the Gamera films/Sandy Frank) awhile back:

It’s nice when someone you like in the arts/media is a nice person in real life. Joel has always come off as genuine and I think that’s a trait that’s not found very much anymore in entertainment. As one of the questions asked about young kids watching, I started watching MST3K in 92 when I was 10 years old and loved it. I also think that them straying from so many foul or profane jokes is much better because usually the vulgar jokes are the easiest.

On a side note, I was discussing with a friend last night how I think MST3K would fit perfectly on AMC. Granted, we all want the show back and we’ve all been crying forever about new episodes, etc. but I couldn’t help thinking that it would work well and there could just be one show a month, like the first Saturday every month or something so it would be like Discovery Channel’s Sharkweek, an event that happens on the channel every so often. It will never happen, but ahhh what dreams may come….

Excellent – thank you for this feature.

Joel has put me at ease about an upcoming event in Seattle. I am deathly nervous about meeting some of the folks that I have shared hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of my life with. It helps to know that Joel feels the same when he meets one of his icons. I always fear that I will say something stupid and turn into a babbling idiot. Joel has set the stage perfectly for the event by sharing his thoughts on his own experiences in these situations. I don’t need any autographs – already have those from the CT 8X10 and the little cards inserted in the DVD mailers. My goal is to shake the hands of some of my favorite performers, thank them for their work, and actually come away NOT being remembered (as another one of those weirdo fans).

One thing I would like is a photo with the cast – if they are agreeable, the vibe is right, and it does not cause too much disruption for the rest of the line, this would be fabulous. If not – I’ll always have the pictures in my head.

Joel – if you’re reading these comments – thanks for putting me at ease. I am looking forward to the Seattle show on 3/14. Thanks for everything sir.

Great Q&A. He seems like a good egg.

I thought the leering at the kid’s leg scene was a Godzilla movie and not Gamera – and it was “Roxanne”‘s leg? (Unless they did it more than once). :?:

Thanks for answering this batch of questions, Joel! Some great insights in there.

Re: Question 13. I agree, I admit I am one who never adequately appreciated Josh’s short-lived contribution to MST3K, but who now thinks he’s the strongest riffer in CT (no offense, Joel!) :-)

  20. Thanks Satellite guys for using two – count ’em two! – of my questions, and thanks Joel for the excellent answers.

Although some people got their handles credited for the questions, and some didn’t (like me). I’m sure there was some reason for that, though, right?

Seriously, though, they were all great questions and great answers and it was a fun read. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next round.

Heh. Wow. My question was really more to the group at large than Joel… but I’m glad to see him chime in on the “was MST REALLY all THAT clean before?” issue with the same general befuddlement I do.

    A good Q&A.

  27. MikeK says:

Fascinating, Captain. I liked learning about the movie, the reasons why he left the show and the problem of Sandy Frank.

The leg leering thing was in Godzilla vs. Megalon, the one with Jet Jaguar.

Agreed. Excellent interview. The segment on the MST movie and the idea to produce a whole series of films was especially interesting. Thank you, Joel!

Has anyone seen the text file floating around supposedly written by Joel where he declares that Cinematic Titanic will now be released via Bit Torrent free of charge? It also says this:

    “IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL MISTIES!
Rifftrax SUCKS! Join us at Cinematic Titanic in destroying Rifftrax! Please post negative comments everywhere Rifftrax is mentioned! Only the true MST3K army can defeat this abomination of MST3K!”

Its gotta be a hoax, right? I’m ashamed anyone would try and frame Joel like this. There’s also a Jim Mallon txt file that states that MST3K will be coming back, and its just FILLED with anti-Mike crap. Just ridiculous.

Great to read Joel’s answers. I must be getting old but, when he mentioned Superchicken, I laughed! How many out there can still remember Superchicken? I miss humor like that…

    @Brimley 29…

C’mon… How often does Joel use the word “sucks”?

The thing I liked about this interview was how he treated all of his current and former co-workers with respect. Even the ones that he has had disagreements with in the past…

Loved the interview, and I now want “Movie riffing is too important to be left to the professionals” on a T-shirt. :)

And yes, those text files sound like classic (and mean-spirited) hoaxes. Unless it’s on the CT website (or the MST3K website for Jim), it’s some jerk being, well…a jerk. :)

Forget the tread-mobile; what about the WombMate?

Episode 412, “Hercules and the Captive Women.” Joel’s invention is a set of headphones that attach on either side of a pregnant woman’s belly with an attached tape player.

Fast forward ten or so years and they’re selling it. For real. Google up “Bellysonic.” That’s just one such version.

I used to work with A stand-up comedian named Scott Miller (he had to have another job to make ends meet They’re not all Joel Hodgsons or Jerry Seinfelds) He told me Joel was one of the best guys to work with on the circuit because he was so helpful and encouraging. It really comes across here too. Joel just seems to be a genuine calss act.

  38. FordPrefect says:

I found Joel’s description of a potential MST feature film franchise to be particularly interesting. In a way, it feels like this has happened with Cinematic Titanic. Due to the wait time between releases, Cinematic Titanic feels more like an independent feature film franchise than a traditional TV series. The difference is that the theatrical screenings are live performances, which are quickly followed by DVD releases.

    Good Q & A.

He avoided the many “what’s the chance of a MST3K reunion” type questions though.

Interesting that he proposed doing some actual MST3K instead of those web shorts.

I wonder why Mallon refused or didn’t like the idea?

  41. Red Hobbes says:

Jim Mallon probably was thinking of all the logistics and salaries that Best Brains would have to pay for a new series of MST3K. Now, if enough people demanded it, and Joel, Mike et al declared that they’d be back in a heartbeat, and we entered the Age of Aquarius, we’d probably get MST4K or something.

I’ll also go on record that I don’t think Jim Mallon is a jerk, or anything like that. I think he was just a small town guy who got over his head trying to run a business that suddenly went international overnight. Doesn’t mean he didn’t do questionable things, but doesn’t mean he’s not a nice guy.

I wonder if Joel and the CT gang will feature guest riffers, or even release CT as a box set at the end of their first year.

You’re right #23, it is “Time of the Apes.” Can’t expect Joel to have the kind of encyclopedic knowledge of the show that we fans do…he’s got a life, after all.

  43. Luke M says:

Man, I am dying to see those notebooks and photos. I want Shout Factory to scan ’em, have the gang add some commentary text, and put them up for sale as a downloadable PDF. Instant cool product, negligible production cost. Make it so!
(Of course what I *really* want is a full-on coffee-table book, but that seems like one of those “and a pony” wishes…)

Thanks, Joel, for answering my question.

The “leg-leering” was in both “Godzilla Vs. Megalon” and “Time Of The Apes.” Godzilla was especially creepy because the leering was done to a boy.

Great interview! That cleared up a question i’ve always wanted to ask, “Who was the Buckminster Fuller fan on the crew?”

I’ve been an admirer of Bucky’s books and inventions since my late teens and I noticed the use of geodesics in the old Gizmonic miniatures and the SOL design, it’s one of the things that instantly caught my attention in the early days of the show.

Great interview by one of entertainment’s good guys! Thanks to Joel and Sampo for putting this together. The information on the movie planning was especially interesting, as the major players were not those I would have suspected.

“I wonder if Joel and the CT gang will feature guest riffers, or even release CT as a box set at the end of their first year.”

I think they had a “rubber band boxset” or “cheap plastic bag boxset” around Christmas, all the movies so far held together somehow.

I have to agree that was one of the best interviews that I have read from MST3K crew. Many of the questions were really great, especially the one about the artwork and the planning and designs of the SOL set. I special thanks to Sampo and Joel from me for choosing my question about Frank’s hair. That literally put a huge grin on my face yesterday! I wanted to add some levity among my questions. Great job all around.
