Shout! Factory has created a new Mystery Science Theater 3000 “storefront” on iTunes. Shout! tells us that they plan to release episodes on iTunes as they come out on DVD, as well as provide “additional cool content” from time to time. Coming February 3: Volume XIV.
And don’t forget that the four episodes from the 20th Anniversary set (aka Volume 13) are still available:
First Spaceship on Venus
Laserblast
Werewolf
Future War

Very cool! Great to see Shout! putting in the extra effort to sell the show.

Now if they just charge a sane amount of money instead of $9.99 each episode then they might be worth getting. As it is I’ll stick with getting the full DVDs.

They should just make the episodes available for download through EZTakes.

I just got the Shout newsletter, and it has some additional info about the upcoming box set, including some of the nifty extras:
Returning To The Satellite Of Love – MST3K Style
The 20th Anniversary edition of Mystery Science Theater 3000 was so popular that we decided to release four additional films that have never seen the light of DVD. This round of “masterpieces” includes Mad Monster, Manhunt In Space, Soultaker and Final Justice. However, we didn’t stop there! The 4-disc set also includes four limited-edition mini-posters depicting the individual film’s art, a clip of Mike, Tom and Crow on ESPN’s Cheap Seats Without Ron Parker, brand-new interviews with MST3K faves Joe Estevez (Soultaker) and Greydon Clark (Final Justice) and more. The 20th Anniversary Edition is also still available, so order both!

They should have Jim Mallon travel the country, personally delivering DVDs of the KTMA episodes.

That is some asinine copy-writing.

It’s too bad the Mystery Science Theater 3000 fanbase has failed to grasp the power of the internet.

Why the roman numerals for Vol. XIV? None of the other sets were numbered that way.

I approve. Still, I prefer tactile media, but if this the avenue to a larger audience, I’m all for it.

I’m mostly surprised they kept numbering the sets at all. As TV shows reach higher seasons, sales decrease. I thought should might take this opportunity to got with titles that would make them seem a little more evergreen.
MST3K: The Films That Wouldn’t Die
That way casual fans wouldn’t see the number and think “Do I have to buy 13 other sets first?”

I think the MST sets are a totally different situation than any other TV show DVD sets. For one thing these aren’t seasons, the are just sets of four random episodes, and I can’t imagine that there actually is anyone who would think “Do I have to buy 13 other sets first?” when it comes to something like MST. This isn’t Seinfeld or The Simpsons we’re talking about where people who just casually watch reruns once in a while might see those DVDs in the store and think about buying them. At this point with MST being off TV for 10 years there are no casual viewers anymore. Anyone who is that clueless about what MST actually is would ost likely never consider buying any of the DVDs anyway. A person who still remembers it well enough from casually watching it so many years ago would likely know enough about the show to realize that it isn’t all that important to get the episodes in any particular order. I’m not really surprised that they are still going to be numbering the sets, and I think it was definitely the correct choice. It helps people collecting the sets keep track of them as they come out, and any people who for some reason don’t want to buy every set would just pick and choose whichever sets have episodes they really want no matter what number set it is.

As one of those people who started watching it the first season on Comedy Central, I want them all. Consequently, when they release them, I buy them because I sincerely want to collect as many of them as possible. I always pre-order, hence, I have Godzilla.
EZ takes is not the answer. (Neither is the Torrent network, although I approve for titles not in release.) Besides, EZ Takes will apparently only do new projects. (Licenses, and what have you. I smell lawyers working overtime.)
No, MST3K, forever consigned to television history, will see its future on DVD collections.
As a fan, at least we have that. And the happy memories.

Ya if we could just get this on the zune marketplace that would be great. (I still don’t like apple, my brothers two dead ipods are a testament to that)

This is good news, but if I purchase an episode on iTunes, does their app support burning that to DVD?

why not have a version for portable devices (zune, ipod, small mp4 or avi or mkv or whatever the kids use these days) on the dvd’s themselves?

Um….
Is everyone just sort of glossing over the fact that you can dump the dvd into your ITunes if you have a dvd drive on your computer and the proper software for transferring it? Just wondering…

I’m the only person with a computer without iTunes. This is the only reason I’ve ever seen to get iTunes; I still won’t get it but…almost iTunes. Almost.

I think I have an explanation as to why iTunes charges so much: because of the length of the show, even without commercials, is still the equivalent of the average full-length movie. The iTunes sight looks how the shows are labeled – that being with the name of the movie being riffed – along with the time length of the episodes, and identifies it as charging a movie fee ($9.99), as opposed to the fee of a TV episode ($1.99 to 2.99). It would be up to SF to clarify this distinction, which I don’t think they’d be willing to do.
