I bought it to keep my complete DVD collection complete. But I really enjoyed the special features. Great job from Shout Factory.

I need to order this for the supplementals, plus the set that was released prior to. Big financial crunch this time of yr when the kids head back into the indoctrination system, ha, so my order will have to hold off ’til October.

This is great for people who came late to the party. I already have them, and have limited funds and limited space.

I’m interested in knowing if the set has improved video and sound. I’ve been looking around for that and so far am not seeing any mention of possible improvements. Does anyone have the set and can share their thoughts?

I agree, nice for people who missed out on the original Volume I, but my old trusty set serves me just fine. Man, I never get tired of Catalina Caper!

Yes, the new set has improved sound and picture quality over the original, and the bumpers restored.

For me, the best part by far is that these eps are now available on iTunes! I really don’t use physical media anymore. I have purchased every MST3K episode available on iTunes and always will.

So, Shout Factory – if you’re listening – please make every episode available on iTunes!

    Best,

Did these get new menus in the style of the other Shout sets?

Reissuing Volume 1 is one of the classiest moves made by Shout Factory in the MST3K time-line.

(And they’ve made a lot of classy moves.)

I hope countless fans buy the hell out of it and that Shout considers more reissues.

If Shout Factory has anything to say about it, MST3K will never die.

If you already own Volume 1, but can afford to double dip, please consider doing so. It’s worth it and you will bey sending a clear message to Shout Factory that we will support further reissues.

(Laterally, I would love to Shout take over the reissues of the mysteriously out of print Cinematic Titanic shows. No one wants to pay $100 for a Blood of the Vampires DVD.)

This would be classy if they follow the Rhino model (think: Rhino selling Gila Monster seperately to those who already had volume 10) of making the supplimentary material available to those who already have volume 1 seperately. It is not classy to force me to double dip when I already have something. (Yes I can live without the restored bumpers.)

Got mine a few minutes ago and watching Creeping Terror right now and I can tell the picture looks about the same as Rhino’s..As far as the menus go,just the MST3K logo and Play Movie on the left and Bonus Features on the right.I’m sure the others are the same way…It’s thinner, too, which is nice…Excellent job Shout!…Look forward to future box sets…

I agree. The availability issues that have plagued Cinematic Titanic for the past five years have really hurt the chances for a wider audience of fans to check them out. You’d think Amazon could at least offer all 12 of the DVD episodes on Instant Video even if they can’t keep the DVDs in print.

To be fair, I think it would be a bit difficult for Shout to try and verify whether or not we already purchased the original box set from a separate company 13 years ago.

Watching the rather disturbing extras on Creeping Terror, wow, I think Vic Savage may be the most whacked out MST director.

First, the suggestion to double dip was mine, not Shout Factory’s, and even then, I said only to consider it.

Placing your conditions (the Rhino model) on what would make it a classy move is irrelevant.

Their move remains classy, for several reasons. The main one being it was “the right thing to do.”

My “pie in the sky” thinking is that if sales are strong enough it may influence them to pursue more reissues for physical sets that are simply out of reach for the general fan. I was daydreaming out loud in the hopes I might push the, admittedly, few who are tittering to double dip, implying it is not just a purchase, but possibly a “vote.”

Shout Factory didn’t reissue Vol 1 in hopes of counting on double dippers. They certainly realize that most (logically) would be like you, and that you would resist doing that.

While I absolutely love Daniel’s/Ballyhoo’s work, I too, would hesitate before double dipping. (I think I would end up doing so, as like many here, I suffer from “complete-ism.”)

Shout Factory re-issued Vol 1 for the growing demand from new fans.

Sometimes I get the feeling there are people out their with their complete sets who resent the very idea of reissues (not you, Dan, I know that’s not what you said), especially if they paid a very large price to complete their sets.

Personally, I am hoping Shout Factory also did this as a kind of experiment as well, to see how well it sold, given that physical media is itself teetering.

Imagine yourself in the other position, let’s say you didn’t own Vol. 2 or whatever OOP set you really wanted that was overpriced on the secondary market. Then lo and behold Shout Factory releases that PLUS extras, for 30-40 dollars. Would you or WOULD YOU NOT then believe it was a classy move on their part?

    I think you would.

I can argue with you all day about why what they did is “classy,” yet I am on your side in understanding your frustration.

While I don’t disagree in theory that it would cool to release the supplemental material separately, the last thing I want is for Shout Factory to follow the “Rhino Model” in any shape or form. But that could just be your terminology and not that you really wish for them to become more Rhino-like.

Shout Factory consistently pulls these amazing rabbits from out of nowhere that impress the hell out of fans.

I’m not saying that as an MST3K fan boy blowing smoke, but as a shocked observer noting the success of their “model” in far more areas than just MST3K.

Their dedication is absolutely unreal. I’ve never seen anything like it, other than in some small publishing houses or extremely independent ventures. I could even say their mindset/model borders on “cult-like.”

And that’s some Kool-Aid I’ll drink any day of the week.

Bottom line, no one is forcing you to do anything.

Consider the fact you’re one of the lucky ones with the original Rhino version.

Don’t be so butthurt over what is, for many many fans, without question, fantastic news.

    Another point:

When Rhino offered to sell Gila Monster separately, Rhino was addressing a Rhino problem with Rhino customers.

With this reissue, Shout is not addressing a Shout problem with Shout customers, but addressing a problem with the market of OOP DVDs.

It is COMPLETELY different. There is NO OBLIGATION for them to dilute their product.

    NONE.

To fit the parameters of your argument, the conditions would have to be identical.

If, Shout offered a future volume in which later one episode was pulled due to legalities, and another replaced it on subsequent issues of said volume, and if Shout did NOT offer that replacement episode to purchasers of the original version of the volume, THEN and ONLY THEN could you cry “not classy.”

    It’s apples and oranges.

If I get some spare cash I think i’ll buy the new version, but it only seems like yesterday I bought it the first time. Will fill in the gap till the next release. I haven’t got any of the CTitanic or Rifftrax discs but I guess some of them are already out of my price range so perhaps Shout will do something about that too. I also seem to remember Rhino sent out a free disc to replace one in the sets due to quality issues, Leech Woman?

I would love to go digital with this series but I’m annoyed that Shout does not make the bonus features available on iTunes or any of the other digital stores.

The ONLY thing I could complain about that set is that the original Comedy Central promos are not included. I distinctly remember the one for Creeping Terror. Yes, it was really just a short version of a host segment but it still makes me laugh. Hell, I don’t even care about the quality of them. If you have to use the versions that fans have been spreading around, go for it. If you could get others from CC that are not being spread around, I would love you. But this could come down to a rights thing with Comedy Central. But if Shout could get Universal to license them films, what kind of excuse could Comedy Central have to not hand over 20 year promos? What are the promos to them?

You do realize that the same guy who’s produced and cleared titles for the Rhino sets is producing and clearing for the Shout Sets right? Plus the sets follow the same format (Four episodes per set, one per disc, ect.)

Considering how far The First Network Which Shall Remain Nameless has gone to disassociate itself from MST3K, I’d say it’s a very big deal to them.

I can’t speak to the archiving practices at Comedy Central or at Best Brains, but I know a little about the state of archival material at the big three networks. The preservation gaps, especially for high-profile programs such as the Tonight show, Today and the Huntley-Brinkley Report, are appalling. The emphasis simply was not on saving material for audiences fifty years in the future.

So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least that BBI or CC didn’t hold on to high-quality tapes of the promos once their purpose as on-air promotional material was served. It definitely wouldn’t surprise me that they didn’t hold on to them for two decades.

Thank you, Brandon. You saved me from having to post about the state of promos and they way that they are preserved — which is to say, they’re usually not preserved at all. For proof, check out the BluRays of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The included promos there are inferior VHS prints. My personal collection includes vastly superior prints directly from the satellite feed. Some of my MST3K promos and Turkey Day bumpers are at least equal in quality to the ones released on DVD by Shout (this is NOT a slam at Shout; they can release only what they’re given).

Vic Savage, a man who makes Charles Manson the safer person to be around. I rented The Creep Behind the Camera last night. As a general rule, I always hope for the best for the people who make these bad movies shown on MST3K, but if the ending of TCBTC is true then I’m glad Vic got what he deserved.

I bought my copy to stay current as well with the releases of MST3k SETS. But, when Boarders Books was going out of business, I went back the stores several times and checked out the dvd section. The MST3K section remained untouched for a while. Then they announced their 75% off mark on all remaining merchandise and I scooped up all the volumes the Milwaukee locations had that were out of print or close to being out of print to fill the gaps in my collection at a reasonable price… I consider myself lucky to have found them at that time, had the patience to hold out and luck to get as many volumes as I did, which were 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 ,7 and 9. Now my collection is up to date, 1- 33, but shout is doing a service for the newbies that have discovered this show recently, like my millennial cousin, so they don’t have to sell three kidneys just to get a volume!

Rhino didn’t invent the four pack.

You DO REALIZE that sharing a common employee does not the identical business model make?

Are you saying that Rhino Sets are equal to Shout Sets? I prefer to view them as different Very much so. The nice advantage of Rhino sets in my opinion are the volumes that included the full length unriffed film as a bonus.

You’re being argumentative over a simple comment.

    THAT I realize.

As far as one episode per disc, I recall some flipper discs.

    Correct?

Or did you mean to say “one per side”?
