CT Reviews

“Luigi Bastardo” — if that is his REAL name — has a nice review of the latest release from Cinematic Titanic.

So does Brian Orndorf at eFilmCritic.com.

His real name is Adam Becvar; it said so at the bottom of the review.

Mary Jo Pehl as the MVP? Wow….I couldn’t disagree more. I am an enormous fan of Joel, Frank and Trace. J. Elvis has grown on me. But, I’ve never, ever, ever understood Mary Jo Pehl’s comedic appeal as a performer. As a writer? She’s clearly terrific. But, her delivery has always killed me. It’s always been the antithesis of MST3K-esque humor to me. Pearl is the worst thing that ever happened to me as a fan. And the fact that host segments spotlighted her significantly more often than they used to feature Dr. F and Frank hurt…a lot. Now, her CT persona is SIGNIFICANTLY less offensive than Pearl’s. But, I still desperately wish that Kevin, Mike and/or Bill was sitting in her chair.

A team of Joel, Mike, Trace, Frank and Kevin would be a gift from heaven. All MVP’s. All responsible for my devotion to MST3K.

Wow. Sorry for the venting. It’s just frustrating to read that the one thing that prevents CT from being a home run for me is being considered the MVP.

I guess that’s why comedy and art, in general, is subjective.

While i’m not a huge fan of Pearl myself, i’ve grown to love Mary Jo in CT. She’s delivered some my favorite lines in the few i’ve seen. I was worried that she and Josh wouldn’t be able to stand up to the triple threat of Joel, Trace and Frank but i’ve been, happily, proven wrong.

Her Pearl was no Dr. F. or Frank, but she’s pretty good on CT.

Nothing says “take my review seriously” like the name Luigi Bastardo

Seriously though, that’s great he gave CT a positive review.

I love Mary Jo’s delivery and it’s great that she is getting some much do recognition. Awesome. I’m so glad that Cinematic Titanic is getting such good press.

I really do agree with most of you. Her delivery on CT is worlds better than her Pearl persona. I just was shocked to read her described as the MVP.

Other than Joel…I think the MVP so far has to be Frank.

If you can go see them live, people do! You will love them all.

    Back to topic.

These guys understand Movie Riffing 2.0.

As far as another MVP, it’s Josh!

Really, you have to see them live to understand.

I have to admit…I was kind of bummed out that Josh was a part of CT when I first heard about the project.

For me, my love for MST3K has always been about Joel, Mike, Trace, Kevin and Frank. I liked Bill too, but, those guys were the Mt. Rushmore of the show for me. (I’ve made it clear how I felt about Mary Jo/Pearl).

I had tried watching Season 1 eps and they did NOTHING for me. It was clear they were still getting their sea legs and Kevin IS Tom Servo to me.

However (and man, this was a long winded way of getting to my point), I have to admit that Josh has been awesome. His delivery is terrific.

I think Mary Jo is doing a great job. One of my biggest laughs was of a riff done by her. Five people and five different styles – something for everyone. :!:

Thursday night in Chicago (Santa Claus Conquers The Martians) we were in the second row, right behind her, and she and Joel got to know our laughs. She is WONDERFUL live. She’s just a little nervous, and needs to get used to riffing the film live.

Watched Frankenstein’s Castle Of Freaks the other day. Geat show, maybe the best CT DVD yet. The only thing we couldn’t figure out was why they bothered to cover up the brief topless nudity if they were going to have a few bits of foul language in the jokes. It’s not like there was any outright graphic sexual situation in the film, just brief shots of female breasts, and if you’re okay with hearing or letting your kids hear “the s-word” in the jokes, you’re probably okay with having a few seconds of toplessness as well. Next time they can save money on production costs by skipping the “breast blimp technology”. A brief, innocuous view of female breasts is much less to worry about psychologically than the behavior of the characters in the film.

Luigi Bastardo’s Russian mother, the singer and tree rights activist, Luana Bichka, is more well known than her son, though perhaps not as well know as his legendary sister, softcore actress turned professional bingo meistress, Little Sooka…

I’m surprised Sat. News didn’t know any better!

Wow, everyone sure has different tastes.

Pearl was my favorite during the Sci-Fi years, followed in order by Crow, Brain Guy, Mike, Servo, and Bobo. I think MJ is great on CT. Didn’t like Josh as Larry, liked him as Servo, like him on CT. Like Joel and Mike for different reasons; no pref of one over the other. Trace & Frank are the best.

Liked Freaks. Thought the blimp concept could’ve been executed better. Didn’t mind it though. Seems like they’re trying to keep it PG-13, which explains inclusion of language, exclusion of nudity.

  16. I'm not a medium, I'm a petite says:

Loved MJP on MST ( as Pearl and as all her incidental characters ). Really fun and funny ( and not unattractive ).

However, I think she is horrifically unfunny on CT. I don’t like CT ( as I’ve made clear ) and she is one reason for that dis-like. Sad to ssy, same story with Frank. Loved him ( as did we all ) on MST; I can’t figure out why the heck he’s on screen for CT.

With sincere regrets to Ms. Pehl and Mr. Conniff. sorry guys.

“I just was shocked to read her described as the MVP.”

Of the episode, not the “series” or whatever CT is calling their run.

The same critic has been highlight efforts in every episode within his reviews.

Relax. Besides, MJP actually is funnier than usual in the FRANKENSTEIN episode.

I always thought Mary Jo was, let’s diplomatically say, not that well utilized in front of the camera on MST3K, but I think she’s extremely funny in Cinematic Titanic. Her jokes and her delivery are top-notch and I think she’s hilarious. With CT, she’s really found a niche that suits her style. I think she adds a lot of really good stuff to CT. That includes the DVDs and the live performance we saw in Minneapolis last October.

I’m way into Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax – it’s as though MST3K were an amoeba and divided itself and now I have two of it to enjoy!

And Josh is cool because he brings us back to the beginnings in the eighties. He made a great second banana to Clayton Forrester and he’s great on the Titanic. I’ll be writing my own review soon, so I won’t waste all my compliments on this little comment post.

Oh, just viewed “freaks” – not laugh out loud, but keep a perpetual grin on my face. CT is the sum of its parts, each one is valuable to the riffing- personally, (for those who object to MJP) and I like having a woman’s touch.

I have also found that repeated viewings help with CT, as they did with MST3k- one generally picks up on the more obscure riffs along with the miserable film making. Bring on the next one!

  21. Hey all, glad you enjoyed the review (well I’m glad that those of you who enjoyed the FILM enjoyed the review). I just wanted to let you know that (providing the screening copy makes its way to me on time) I’ll be posting a review for the next CT entry as soon as I can. There are also some older CT reviews at DVD In My Pants.com. I also submitted a two-fer of Legacy Of Blood and Santa Claus Conquers The Martians that they STILL haven’t posted yet (the lazy bastards!).

Now then, as for my name…it’s “Lord God Emperor Luigi Bastardo, Esquire” to be precise. Thank you. Good night.
