RiffTrax on disc by studios outside RiffTrax? Is this a first?

Store has really been picked through, but there are some good bargains to be had. But, maybe I’ve been spoiled, those bargains are severely tainted by $16.40 as my cheapest shipping option.

Yeah, the shipping’s high but I spent money away. Hard to pass up.

That’s a helluva EVERYTHING MUST GO!-level deal on stuff.

The prevailing theory on Reddit regarding the big MST3K.com liquidation sale (which has been going since May 9) is that Jim has been in the process of selling the rights to the show to someone (Shout? Joel? Mike?) for the last few months.
They’re only interested in the IP and he will lose the domain and ability to sell his stockpile of merchandise afterwards, so he’s cashing in now.
Part of that theory being that no one wants to work with him anymore, and his continuing ownership of MST3K/BBI lessens the value of the brand and diminishes any chance of a reboot. But, if he sells it to an interested and well-meaning third party, those chances get better.
And he’s got another career now, is probably getting close to retirement and knows the brand can flourish better under different stewardship.

Alerted one of my FB friends to this, and his exact quote was: “I think I’ll literally buy everything if it is in stock.”
I bought two shirts since I’ve already got all of the DVDs left.

I ordered a bunch of stuff, then checked the site the next day and almost everything I ordered was already out of stock!

I think so… It’s interesting… I may have missed it, but I don’t think there’s been any kind of announcement…
If that’s true, I wonder if he’ll make a profit on what he paid US for it. WE made a 100% profit when we sold it to him, because Scifi.com (foolishly) GAVE it to us. :-)

Really? Sci-Fi just handed the domain away for free? They really must not have cared.
Bad business decision. Per for the course with them, though.

That’s nice of the Sci-Fi Channel to give ownership of something like that to fans who care about the show.

I ordered from the sale on 7/27 when the discussion thread made me aware of the sale.
I got 2 dvd sets, one of which I didn’t own and one to give my nephew. I got 3 t-shirts and a sweatshirt, and a few loose ends.
It was all delivered at 12:51 pm today.
Righteous.

This is all very fahscinating…
I read before about the MST3K.com sale, and indeed it does look kind of like a going-out-of-business sale, but the rumor about it being because of the rights being transferred away from Mallon isn’t something I’ve heard before. It’s interesting if that means moves are being made to make a reboot happen (as much as I feel that might be trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice), but I wonder if something like that might mean ominous stuff for the future of Shout Factory sets. Hmm…
As for the Rifftrax thing, is that for sure something that’s being released by someone who’s not Rifftrax? It does look interesting that it says Blu-Ray on there. I don’t think that Rifftrax has released anything on Blu-Ray that’s wasn’t a live show.

Yeah I don’t want to come off like some wise guy saying “sucker!” They foresaw no use for the URL, they saw no value in the URL and they were very nice to let us have it. But, objectively, it was a shortsighted business decision.

I doubt that Jim is so cashstrapped that he needs to sell the rights to the show. Maybe the website isn’t pulling in the profits to justify it’s cost and that’s why he’s shutting it down.
@14: That was originally my thoughts as well. Does that site get a lot of traffic? I almost never go on it and I wouldn’t be surprised if a simple shutdown is all it is really.

If it doesn’t get a lot of traffic, it’s because nothing new is ever put on it except new riffs. Nothing else is really updated, nothing new to see. Most fans have probably read everything on there already. Just seems sad, sitting there all by its lonesome. Nothing really going on with it.
I just bought another black ‘bot tee, the one I had kind of faded. I also bought a mouse pad, just for the hell of it, since this new tee will someday fade. Fade like a sunset going down forever. *sniff*
There’s barely anything left on the site. No single DVD’s, only one DVD set left, barely any shirts.
Looks like when Joel was packing up Crow’s limbs and putting them in a box. Where is that clown in the sky?

Yeah got my order of a few DVD sets to help fill out my collection. They threw in an episode XVI with the Servo Figurine which was autographed. I assume it is Kevin’s signature but can’t make it out for sure. Really cool for like the 12 bucks I got that set for.

Since Jim hasn’t really done much with the property it makes sense for him to sell the rights (hopefully to Joel). I’m sure he’ll still get some percentage of the profits.

Shipping was high as others mentioned, but considering the amount of loot I got for about $20 total, it was worth it. Even though things were picked over I still got some decent stuff.

Wow, good thing I got in there and nabbed one of the plain black T’s with the little “planet” logo on them, that I’ve wanted since the CC days but kept putting off. Eight bucks well spent.
The shirts with the Bot art and stuff are OK, but the plain black with the classic “planet” logo are my fave — simple, plain, elegant.
I’m guessing most of the single-disc DVD releases are gone? Crap, wish I had a little more cash lying around; eight bucks for a copy of Manos is a wicked sweet deal.

Damn wish I would have seen this before today. Everything’s gone, apparently the sale was a success.

As for “going out of business”, would I be alone in saying, I didn’t know MST3K.com even EXISTED??
I just thought the Brains, y’know, respected Sampo’s site as the main site of fan activity, that Shout Factory aired the streaming episodes, and the corporately-authorized site was just there to carry the domain banner and sell merchandise….Which we were all buying cheaper on Amazon, a bad bit of competition for the dollars of the few fans who did know the site existed. That’s sort of, y’know, how the Dot-Com Bust happened, fifteen years ago.
If they are going bust, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shout buy out the domain as a streaming site, and sell their sets.
Kino Lorber’s an indie company, so they can gather their extras from a wide variety of sources, so long as they’re not too tied up in studio rights, and wanted some “kitsch” backup to sell that title to its demographic–RT clearly wasn’t going to be sticky about holding their material back (surprise), even if it’s not the particularly most well-known RT.
Or even the most particularly well-known Two-Headed movie of the 70’s, as the Rosie Greer/Ray Milland version got more Joel-era refs, but that one’s coming out from Olive Films. Without the RT gags.

That’s Kino who’s putting it out? Sweet! I really like what they did with Metropolis, so this could be a good deal for Rifftrax.

I went to the site to try and pick up a couple of things, but I’m having a tough time signing in. And when I select something, it won’t register in the shopping cart. Is anyone else having this problem?
By the way, if the site does cease operations, any chance the clips from the KTMA days, including the clips pre-MST, will be archived somewhere else, like here?

UPDATE: Figured out the problem. Order went through fine. I was probably just hitting the wrong switch or something.

Not exactly. On 7/21 we just celebrated Rifftrax’s ninth birthday when it released Road House 7/21/06. But prior to that in 2005 Legend Films pre-released its colorized Plan 9 DVD with special commentary and other bonus material as well as autographed by Mike Nelson. If Road House was the birth of Rifftrax then think of this DVD as its conception. Granted that DVD didn’t have the Rifftrax name on it anywhere but Rifftrax used to sell that DVD on their website and that’s how I came by my copy.
This new DVD from KLS seems a lot like a cross promotion to me in the vain of that original Legend Films’ Plan 9.

I’m aware of the Mike commentaries for Legend Films. I wasn’t counting those since they weren’t exactly proper Rifftrax. I have the Plan 9 and NOTLD DVDs. Plan 9 is pretty close to riffing, but NOTLD not so much.

By the time I got to it last week the site was picked clean. I hope the rumors surrounding this that Mallon is selling the rights are true. I just wish I hadn’t forgotten to buy a Crow “You know you want me baby” T-shirt. Is there no way to get one now? How will I generate endless, next day watercooler chatter over my latest, often repeated and beloved chestnut of a catchphrase??

Has anyone actually seen this rumor anywhere? I see us speculating this possibility in this thread but I’ve never seen what I’d consider a rumor by someone in the know anywhere out there. Am I missing one?

“The prevailing theory on Reddit…”
It’s important to point out that this isn’t so much a “theory” as it is “wild speculation made without evidence.”

I almost never went on that site, because I couldn’t get there on my IPAD (“SORRY, you need the latest version of Adobe Flashplayer”.) Bought whatever was left. No DVDs remain, so beanie caps, T shirts & note pads will have to do. I’m not really a “beanie cap” kind a guy, but at $2 a pop, I’m there…When Joel appeared at last fall’s Chiller Theater Con, he said that the “new” MST3K would have a Kickstarter campaign, probably in “early” 2015. Although he wasn’t going to be the host, Joel was certainly a player in the new project. Perhaps the “fire sale” is a sign that Jim Mallon has been bought out. I just wonder if the SHOUT contracts to distribute old episodes limits or prevents production of any new series, or requires that SHOUT be a participant in one. Remember the Rhino/Shout dispute with “The Film Crew?”

@25 Kenneth Morgan-I had problems checking out, too. It wouldn’t let me pay with Paypal, saying there was an “argument” (?!). They wouldn’t take Amex either. It’s just Visa/ Mastercard apparently.

And the store is empty now glad I got a last order in
