Vol. XXXI Reviews

The set comes out next week and the reviews are starting. Here’s one from our pal Bruce Westbrook.

Joe Corey at InsidePulse.com has a review. He mentions that the ’93 and ’94 Turkey Day bumpers were not included on the set, and kindly includes them at the end of his piece. Yes, that’s me and Erhardt in the ’93 bumpers. I was dressed as Washington Post TV critic and (then-)MSTie Tom Shales. Kind of an inside joke. Erhardt was dressed as Bavaro from “Crash of the Moons.” That was the first time we’d ever actually met. I’ve fallen out of touch with nearly all the people in those bumpers, and we’re all 20 years older (and a few are no longer with us). I hope everybody is well, and I do hope Debbie Tobin has forgiven us.

DVD Corner has a review.

Alex Biese, app.com’s resident MSTie, has a review.

John Sinnott at DVD Talk has a review.

What did you do to Debbie, you monsters?!

I discovered MST3K thanks to Tom Shales. We had just moved to the DC area and there was the big article in the Post about it and all I could think was “this sounds like the most amazing show ever.” We didn’t get cable for close to a year after that (newly built neighborhood) and the second we did it was the very first show I looked for. So I’ll always have a soft-spot for Shales even when he was very wrong. Oh, and he co-wrote that honking huge SNL book, so he’s got that going for him. Which is nice.

Oh, God, we meant well, honestly, but her house got kinda trashed and her kid caught some HORRIBLE cold from somebody and the neighbors were NOT pleased — she pretty much stopped posting in the message boards after that. :::sigh:::

By the way, Sue Schnieder, who you’ll see in those bumpers having won the “name the riff” contest or whatever it was, got a MASSIVE rear-projection TV that I assume she has long ago dumped. She invited a bunch of MSTies over for the weekend and, well, it was a bit worse for wear by Sunday afternoon… :-)

It’s weird thinking of this coming out next week, since I ordered it off of Shout Factory and got it 3 weeks early.

Anyway, they may not have the ’93 or ’94 Turkey Day bumpers, but I do remember them talking about at least the ’94 one briefly in the documentary feature. Man, Adam West is just a cool guy, isn’t he? Besides the Turkey Day stuff, I think perhaps Gumby and Clokey is the most interesting of the special features. It’s interesting how big of a name Gumby is and yet the riffing apparently got a lot of praise from Art Clokey.

The ’93 and ’94 bumpers aren’t included? Why? It’s the frickin’ Turkey Day set!

I love what Ballyhoo does with the extras, but whoever decided to put a scream in their production logo… Man, that gets annoying real fast. But I do love their extras, and I’ve already devoured the new set, and anxiously await the next one!

And strangely enough, the old Scrapbook tape has a far superior quality copy of TD ’91 Host Segs, but whateves, it’s still cool to have it on this set

One more thing, lest anyone think this set is not essential, it is. There are a few clips of the Turkey Day marathons that I had never seen before (at least on YouTube), and that alone is worth the price of admission. Conversely, there are a few clips left out, as you can view at this clip:

    Gotta love Turkey Day!
(if you can’t access the clip, search YouTube for “MST3K Turkey Day 92 Remastered”)

The skeleton image and sound in the Ballyhoo title screen is lifted from House On Haunted Hill, which I thought was pretty nifty the first time I recognized it. But, yeah, it could stand to be quieter. (As could all the menus on Shout’s DVDs.)

I can’t hear the name Debbie without Crow’s breakdown playing in my head.

I’m very sad that those two years of bumpers were not included! Especially as I was one of the Dr. Forresters (the taller one) introducing episode 420 at Debbie’s house. My 15 mins of fame washed away because they couldn’t transfer the rights we all signed for CC at the time, no doubt. :(

  12. I always get happy around official MST3K DVD set release time. It’s like a pleasant holiday ham of potentiality, glazed with expectation.

All political, religious, and economic arguments take a backseat to:

“Do you feel something funny and big about to happen in the Force?”

It says that Joel and the bots are doing intros. Anyone know who’s voicing the bots? Assume Trace is voicing Crow – what about Servo?

I’m happy to read that everyone is enjoying the NEW set… and the various extra’s. To comment on the ‘scream’ used in my Ballyhoo Motion Pictures logo, the name of my company (and the design of its logo) is comprised of several unique personal events. The logo itself dates back to my own childhood memories. Every Friday evening, one of the local television stations would host a horror show. Usually they would play a Universal monster flick or a poverty row chiller. But on this one particular night, they were slated to air William Castle’s 1959 classic, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. Well, blame it on an overdose of pizza and pepsi, but I passed out on the floor in front of the television set, long before the program even started. However, once that first pre-credit scream echoed from the TV, I immediately lept up off the floor. And for the next 70 minutes, my eyes were glued to the television set. That was my first introduction to William Castle, a cinematic showman whose influence extended beyond the movie screen. It was also my first exposure to the vast opus Mr. Vincent Price.

It was Castle who helped me understand the connection between motion picture promotional tactics… and the ‘ballyhoo’ found on the midway of any traveling carnival show. And since the history of both the circus and sideshows were another passion of mine, when it came time to identify myself with a company name, BALLYHOO was my first and only choice.

And, if you watch my logo closely, you will see an illustration of Castle on the right-hand side of the screen, gesturing to the ’emerg-o’ skeleton opposite him. The resounding scream you hear is the same scream that woke me up as a child. I guess, the ‘Ballyhoo’ logo is my way of saying, “WAKE UP! I am about to show you something unique!”

  17. Regarding the missing ’93 and ’94 Turkey Day bumpers, those were produced by Comedy Central, not Best Brains. Comedy Central did not have home video clearances for the various individuals that popped up in the ’93 bumpers, or the actors used in the ’94 bumpers. Tracking those individuals down would be a nightmare, with the exception of Adam West, who would likely charge a massive fee. Regarding the image quality, Shout! Factory and Ballyhoo tried to track down the masters for the Best Brains-produced bumpers and commercials, but they no longer exist. Sadly, Comedy Central did not keep them.
