Thinking about going to Chiller Theatre to see Joel’s show, which I keep missing the other times he was nearby. I’ve been to Chiller Theatre once before, and I gotta say, it’s kinda sad. Lots of semi-forgotten pseudo-celebrities – most of them perfectly nice people I’m sure – desparately hoping you’ll give them twenty bucks for an autographed 8×10. I vividly recall trying not to make eye contact with Carol Cleveland because I didn’t want to tacitly reject someone I admire. Yvette Vickers (The 50 Foot Woman and Liz in The Giant Leeches) was there, too, just a couple years before her mysterious death, and while she clearly seemed to be enjoying the attention, it’s not the way I like to remember her.

It’s a little weird to see The Brains attending these sorts of horror fandom conventions. While they’re adored at Dragon*Con and the like, the folks at your Chiller Theatres and Scare-A-Thons tend to despise MST3k for mocking their most holy schlock. Maybe the horror fans are finally coming around?

I saw Joel at Monster Bash in June, and I’d say he was very well-received. Standing room only for Riffing myself. There is definitely a big cross over audience for MST3K and classic horror/sci-fi.
