In a true testament to the staying power of our favorite cowtown puppet show, guess what visual pops up in Nicki Minaj’s new video “Anaconda” (it’s apparently completely coincidental that RiffTrax live will be riffing a movie by that name in October). Oh, the video is soooo NSFW (“not safe for work,” because when I put in a NSFW notation, somebody invariably asks what it means) and parental guidance is suggested for young viewers.
well that was interesting….
She’s like the living embodiment of those trucker mudflap silhouette girls, except not as classy.
Not really the type of music I listen to, but I thought it was a fun cameo. Loved when they started jamming to the tune at the end.
MST3K lives on in pop culture!!
Soooo…..how does Nicki Minaj eat and sleep?
I would have felt a lot better if they had popped up in a Mumford and Sons video.
For those who don’t want to sit through the whole thing (heh), reference starts at 3:05. And even if the music drives you nuts it’s worth it for the moment at 3:50. Well, unless the music drives you insane, which is highly possible.
This may be the highest profile pop-culture shoutout MST3K has received (I smell a weekend discussion thread)
Well that was…interesting. ?:-)
Seriously, great shoutout. But I think you should add a NSFW warning for the link.
Haven’t gotten that much headache tryin to see MST3K since Vol 10…!
Purely coincidence …with a purpose!
Deadly Beez in the Trap
Awesome!
So apparently this isn’t the “Official” video, but a lyric video. The “official” video drops (I’m young and hip) on Wednesday. You’re seeing more and more songs that have regular videos and different videos featuring the lyrics to the song. So take that for whatever it’s worth.
@Travis: “So apparently this isn’t the “Official” video, but a lyric video. The “official” video drops (I’m young and hip) on Wednesday.” I’m old and nerdy :nerd:, what does this mean then; who actually made this video, just some random fan? And who the @!^#%$ is Nicki Minaj (I’m afraid to look her up, as I’m at work)?
“You kids with your big pants, and your colored chalk, and your Neve Campbell, and your fanny packs, and your nerf balls and your listenin’ to the No Doubts, and your Pong, and your Volkswagon Golf leases, and your notebooks, and the kids with the pierced I-don’t-know-what’s, the roller skates and the 23 Ski-Doos, and the listening to the Becks,” as well as, (apparently now) your Nicki Minaj’s…..
Anybody happen to know if she’s using an ‘officially sanctioned’ silhouette, and whether or not she had to get the proper clearances to use it ??? ?:-)
My own speculation here: This is just the lyric video. A lot of bands/artists have been releasing these ahead of the release date of a new album or single to drum up support and give fans a taste without spending a fortune on an elaborate music video but something more than just a logo. Since this isn’t being sold, won’t be broadcast, and no funds will come directly from it; the silhouettes didn’t need to be licensed.
@Turquoise
Don’t worry about not knowing Nikki Mirage, or whatever her name is. You’re really not missing out on anything. ;-)
Regarding the idea of Minaj being a MSTie, I think it’s far more likely that Jeff Osborne, the editor/creator of the video, is a fan. I just asked him via Twitter (his handle is @JOsborne32) so I’ll let you folks know if he replies.
Somebody cleverer than me joked on Twitter: “This explains Jim Mallon’s new gold tooth.”
The AV Club describes the situation well:

The biggest surprise to me is that music videos are apparently still a thing…
“who the @!^#%$ is Nicki Minaj?”
She macks the dudes up, backs coupes up, and chucks the deuce up. I mean, duh!
Dat a$$.
So, what I’m hearing is that her posterior region is quite large. I see. Or wait, no I don’t!!! The hell?
Tork_110 #21 – She’s also rockin’ Jordans but she ain’t a jumpman, and other young ladies play the back cause they know she’s the frontman. So, there’s that.
My anaconda wishes he could unhear this song. Ugh.
Hope they sue…
What a crappy, tacky excuse for “music”.
25: I’m totally not a fan but just remember how subjective taste is. Many would call MSTies crazy for finding riffing funny (…I’ve seen it.) Disliking something doesn’t make it any less legitimate nor deserving of legal action, especially given what I said above.
Casey #26 – Exactly, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
By the way, these people who call Msties crazy, you wouldn’t happen to have their addresses and/or license plate numbers, would you?
“She macks the dudes up, backs coupes up, and chucks the deuce up. I mean, duh!”
What!?!? I’m confused! Well as long as she stays off my lawn… where’s my Jello?
Dr. F: Mike your music video experiment this week is a poopie of a video called “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj. Send him the video Frank.
Frank: Baby got back.
If they’d forced Joel or Mike to watch music videos instead of feature films the Mads would’ve been prosecuted by the Hague for crimes against humanity. Nobody’s that evil.
I think the funniest part is how Mike seems to sulk way down in his seat out of embarrassment. I bet I’d feel the same way.
Why does she look like one of those adult inflatable dolls???
Everyone may be entitled to an opinion, but that doesn’t mean that everyone’s right. This doesn’t qualify as “good music” by any rational definition, and anyone who thinks it is has very questionable taste in music. Sorry.
I predict that, long after Nicki Minaj is forgotten and gone, MST3K will live on.
Spot-on, jaybird, although it actually doesn’t offend me, because for me it’s not even an example of music. It’s a commodity, a product of a late-Capitalist society. (Yes, much — if not all — of the music we like qualifies as commodity, but we’re all entitled to decide what we think counts as music, and what doesn’t. :)))
And I think you are SO RIGHT about MST3K and the promise of its longevity! THAT’S the most important think of all (here).
That is, it’s the most important THING of all. Like the THING.
Got a response back from the director today via Twitter:
Jeff Osborne ?@JOsborne32
@runfellow the viral version has a lot more 80/90s references (I’m an mst3k fan tho) http://vimeo.com/102513413
And he’s correct; that version is quite different from the version we’ve seen, and is chock-full of 90’s stuff. So that sort of explains it: The original video had tons more allusions and references, one of which was MST3k, which our director probably remembered from back in the day seeing as he’s a fan, but it got trimmed down for “wide” release. The MST3k silhouettes got left in, and so it sticks out a lot more than it would have will all the other stuff in there.
And for the people arguing the merits (or lack thereof) of Nicki Minaj: Repeat to yourself “It’s just pop music, I should really just relax.”
It stinks!! ;-p
Does anyone else feel like this video borders on defamation? Okay, maybe that’s a stretch. I just really don’t like MST3K being associated with this woman.
Yeah, I know, all you old people making fun of Lady G – but just a reminder, way back when, old people said the Bay City Rollers sucked, and today they’re recognized as …
Hitler was a Mystie and we are ashamed of him as well.
People I feel sorry for:
1) The nice folks at Best Brains whose life work has been funneled into a music video about some tacky woman who boffs drug dealers.
2) Sir Mix-A-Lot.
3) All of us.
4) The families of Nicki Minaj fans for whom there needs to be a support group.
I’m not so sure this is what BBI would care to be associated with. I have a daughter and this would so NOT be good for her self-esteem. And society wonders why women are treated with such dis-respect.
