Los Angeles — Actor James Garner, famed for his easy-going portrayals on TV series including “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files,” died at his home here Saturday, July 19. He was 86. MSTies will remember him described as “beef spokesman James Garner” in a host segment in episode 403- CITY LIMITS.
A full obituary is here.
My first thought was “Oh yeah, he was in Marooned” (AKA Space Travelers), but that was Space Cowboys like 30 years later. Weird how the mind works.
James Garner may only have been mentioned by name once on MST3k, but The Rockford Files was certainly a heavily recurring reference, especially during Mitchell. (I would’ve sworn the producers of Mitchell were ripping off Rockford, but looking at the dates it doesn’t seem possible.)

Just today I was watching an episode where Servo goes “I want Rockford dead!” and I cringed a little. Too soon!

That’s a shame. Garner was not just a good actor but also in my opinion was a leading man who played it cool, but at the same time never came off as smug or crass, not an easy feat. Loved him in Support Your Local Sheriff. Also been watching a lot of the Rockford Files on MeTV lately.
Speaking of which, don’t forget from Rocketship X-M the line “Goodnight, Rockford dad.” Yep, Noah Beery, Jr. who played Rockford’s father on the show was none other than the infamously insufferable Mr. Big Texas-is-the-center-of-the-universe guy.

Saw him in Grand Prix at the theater with dad and my brothers. Dad burned rubber in the family wagon and passed cars left and right on the short trip home. Thanks for giving my brothers and I a rare connection with the old man!

The theme from The Rockford Files alone looms large over the entire run of MST3K, so Garner has always been a presence on the show for me (even if sometimes only on a subconscious level). I also have fond memories of watching The Rockford Files when I was a kid.
RIP, Mr. Garner.

I always wonder if there’s a MST3K connection every time a famous one goes.
RIP Mr Rockford!

My father loved “The Rockford Files”. Some of my earliest memories were watching him watch it.
Of course, being a MSTie my first thought was: “cut out that Rockford music, I’m Mitchell!”

I never really watched Rockford Files. Went passed it a few times while channel surfing in the 90’s, but most of what I know about it I learned from MST. There was a funny moment when I was hanging out with some friends of a friend and someone mentioned that their car was a Rockford. I blurted out, “I want Rockford DEAD!”. Fortunately everyone laughed instead of looking at me like I was insane and forcing me to explain the joke. And we all know that nothing drains the humor from a joke more than it needing to be explained.

I have to watch “Support your Local Sheriff ” whenever it comes on. Goes for a lot of his work. Thanks Mr. Garner.

James Garner always came across to me as a very grounded individual, unimpressed with his own looks and unaffected by his fame; a straight -forward, genuine person.
A VERY TALENTED person.
Farewell, Jimmy…You were enjoyed.
TCM will be having a 24 hour James Garner Tribute this coming Monday ( and they have a moving’ TCM Remembers’ spot running now)
