LONDON — Francis Matthews, a veteran stage and screen actor who appeared in several acclaimed Hammer horror films, including “Dracula: Prince of Darkness” and “The Revenge of Frankenstein,” has died after a short illness. He was 86. He also starred as a mystery-solving crime novelist in 1969 TV series “Paul Temple.” And he is perhaps best remembered as the voice of the title character on TV’s “Captain Scarlet,” episodes of which were seen in episode K02- REVENGE OF THE MYSTERONS (although no fan copy of that episode is known to exist).
Thanks again to Duane for yet another heads up.
I’m beginning to wonder if Duane is in a Dead Pool.
I’ve never seen the “Paul Temple” series, but I know Matthews did a fine job in both Hammer films mentioned. And “Captain Scarlet” was a really good, if unusually dark, kids show from the Andersons.
I’ve always thought Riff Trax should do the Captain Scarlet episodes since there are no fan copies! Sampo..to your knowledge has anyone ever brought this up to the guys??
A very good actor I remember for his Hammer movie roles, since I never saw the Captain Scarlett episodes on MST3K. His voice sounded a lot like Cary Grant.
“Paul Temple on Malta” is on youtube!
A rare opportunity to compare & contrast how Francis Matthews and Joe Don Baker each engaged with The Pearl Of The Mediterranean.
He based his voice performance in Captain Scarlet on Cary Grant. Coincidently I started watch CS the other week. About 14 episodes in. It is very dark and nasty for a childrens show. Thank you Francis Matthews.
He didn’t have to base his voice performance on Cary Grant, that was his natural speaking voice. He sounded the same in his Hammer movies and in an interview he gave on a DVD extra. Being a big fan of Hammer horror movies he was always a favorite of mine.
