RiffTrax Kickstarter Has a New Goal

Having made their “Godzilla” goal in less than 24 hours, RiffTrax has now announced a “stretch” goal (a new term for me): If they get to $250,000, they will do “Anaconda” on Oct. 30.

I don’t know that this was the best way to handle this. Most people will likely have donated as much as they wanted to this campaign, and with few added rewards, there’s not that much incentive to add more.

I think it’s tough to tell whether a separate Kickstarter would have been better than the stretch goal or not. A second one so soon would have meant putting together a whole new set of rewards for pledgers and that might not have been a viable option in the allotted time. I think that given the amount already raised, too, a stretch is easier to keep the momentum going and have the funds raised in 15 or so days instead of starting over at 30. Clearly they now have an in to the/a studios that they didn’t before and they want to capitalize on it as quickly as possible and waiting that extra time could have impacted that.

Hopefully their end game is to not have to raise these funds by Kickstarter for much longer but to prove to the studios that this is a viable source of secondary revenue for their films. If ticket sales are enough to offset the rental and licensing fees in a proven model, an enterprising studio might allow them use of a film a quarter at a reduced rate or on the back-end. They’re just obviously not at that convincing point yet, so everything is cash up front and we end up with Kickstarters. I think the most important thing is that people go to the shows. Sure, they need to reach the goals, but something tells me that these next two movies are the real indicator of their future direction.

Plus, they are reaching new people. I haven’t pledged at all yet and I think I will now, so it’s certainly working on those that were thinking of skipping this Kickstarter or dragging their feet.

TLDR; One Kickstarter is prob better than two and hopefully success at the box office will make it so they don’t have to do more Kickstarters.

Upped my pledge today from 20 to 30, so I guess it worked in part on me

I went to the $25 level since I’ll get 15 of that back as a gift certificate. Even if this stretch goal isn’t met, hopefully the extra money raised will mean that the next Kickstart only needs to be 50 instead of 100k.

I don’t like Kickstarter, but if I were to like it, I would like this project. But I do not. So I cannot. But I still somehow like this project.

There! I just proved Nomad is IMPERFECT!

    Now, you must sterilize.

Sterilize, you hunk of junk narcissistic probe!

(Well, right now would certainly be the opportune moment to have access to a smiley Nomad figure to insert. Let’s Kickstart for a smiley menu that reflects the interests of this site.)

God, does this need to happen. I saw this movie when it came out. To this day I can’t help go off on a rabid, hateful tangent about it (much to the amusement of my friends). This movie needs to ache like I ache.

Kismetgirl: They got enough money to get serious negotiations going with Summit Entertainment, but unfortunately Summit still said no. Fortunately Sony is a bit more open to such negotiations, even if they aren’t interested in giving them VOD rights.

They’re now less than $3K away from reaching their goal for Anaconda, with about 24 hours to go. This one will be a nail-biter …
