It was thought lost to the ages but Scott found it at archive.org. Both Scott and Kevin gave us permission to go ahead and post it, but it was an old-style .swf file with a long forgotten video codec, and many tried and failed to convert it into something useable. Finally our old pal Freezer agreed to give it a shot, and succeeded. Our eternal gratitude goes out to him. So, saved from obscurity, here it is…. Aluminum & Beer.
Nothing I love more than seeing things saved from the depths of blurry memory, but all I’m getting is a gray screen with,
“No Video with supported format and MME type found”
in the middle. Any particular player I should download to view it?

When I right click on it and save it, then play it with Windows Media Player, it works. Otherwise, I was getting the same error.

Let me guess. You guys are using Firefox, right? Firefox doesn’t like MP4 files very much, but I’ve made a small change to make the two get along. The file should be playing for you now.

Kind of reminds me of a type of song Brendan Small would do on Home Movies using some weird character.

Somehow it doesn’t bother me that “Gillian Welch” is actually two people (GW + David Rawlings) but it pisses me off that “Iron & Wine” is just one guy. Maybe it’s that I feel I’m getting shortchanged, or maybe it’s just because he sucks.

@7: While Iron & Wine is really just one guy, he normally plays live with a full band.

The most significant thing I take away from this is that it’s easier to play a 120 year old wax recording than it is to figure out how to get an 8 year old digital recording to play. Some of the first DVDs in my collection are no longer playable; not because the disk is visibly damaged, the data has simply deteriorated. The digital age has it’s wonders, but most things recorded solely in digital format in the last fifteen years will be utterly lost in another fifteen.

@10 Some early CD’s went bad too. It all boils down to quality control in the factory cranking these things out.
Remember HD DVD’s? The format that lost to Blu Ray? A whole lot of discs went bad because one factory didn’t make them properly. The things are only several years old, and already turning into coasters.

Isn’t Scott Bateman the guy who does “Disalmanac”?
