“Shouldn’t a bunch of stupid cops and a fake Bela Lugosi be hanging around here?”

I haven’t seen this movie in years. I might just pick it up.

Hey, this is a good movie! “Atmospheric”, like a Val Lewton movie, really good B&W cinematography, interesting “Psycho” type twist in the plot (the two movies came out almost simultaneously), probably pretty inexpensive but not at all cheap looking, well acted …

I would suggest that a lot of people would get more enjoyment from watching the real movie (check amazon or ebay, both under this title and as “Horror Hotel”, the US release title) than from the riffed version.

(For the record, I’m a big rifftrax fan.)

I can agree with #2 to some degree; although cheap, the movie has some well-built atmosphere. It’s obvious that the folks at Rifftrax thought the fog machine was overused, but there are a couple of scenes where it really does work. It’s a rather slow film, probably filmed over a very short time period, but if you like your horror films dripping with dreary mood, this one was made for you.

I do think, however, that the riffing is still worth it. There’s not a whole lot to work with, this being a straightforward film from a fairly competent cast and crew, but the hits vs. misses ratio for the riffs is quite good. I, for one, appreciate “sharp” riffing a bit more than “goofy” riffing. Here, I think, is a good example of that “sharp” style.

@2….agree….It’s always controversial when a “good” movie is riffed. ( This Island Earth, Carnival of Souls, etc)…I would hope that anyone seeing COtD aka Horror Hotel for the first time would watch it
Unriffed….I believe it’s in public domain, so you can probably find it on YouTube, etc. As a big fan of the pic, I bought both special editions on Dvd….they have good audio commentaries and one edition has a
Strange easter egg ( remember those?) with Christopher Lee making cracks about Forry Ackerman

This is too good a movie to riff.

One of my problems with Rifftrax is they often criticize movies for things they really shouldn’t. Technical details that actually worked well in the movie, but Rifftrax makes fun of anyway, just because they have nothing better to joke about. Their “riff” of Halloween drove me crazy because they were criticizing a lot of shots that were really good.

Who does the cover art for the riffs? They are really good. Wondering if they are using old posters or creating their own.
