Odds and Ends

A few unrelated things:

First–If you live in Northeastern Pa., Thursday is Bad Movie Thursday with MST3K at the Scranton Cultural Center. The movie, natch, is “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.” We start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Reviews for Santa’s Village of Madness and Ghosthouse just popped up on dvdcorner.net.

He died in August, so it’s a bit late for a full obit, but RIP to Larry Pennell, who played Major Thomas in episode 906- SPACE CHILDREN and may be best remembered as Dash Riprock on “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

Yahoo.TV did one of those dumb slideshow articles: “Bots We Want to Partner Up With.” Guess who’s in the second slot?

With “Bots” in the title, is it a big surprise that they chose the magnificent Crow and Tom Servo to be high on the list? I thought they should have included Gypsy and Cambot in there

I actually did see an/the episode of Family Matters with Urkel bot. Whoever was in that costume did an AWESOME job with their robot movement. It was just so fluid, I found myself amazed. That was, until I realized I was watching Family Matters.
Wasn’t Screech star in an adult film with his robot?

LARRY PENNELL solidly nailed it in Bubba Ho-Tep and greatly impressed the film’s director, actors, and crew.

Bubba Ho-Tep is a surprisingly touching meditation on aging (Seriously!), and it might be Bruce Campbell’s only truly serious performance as an actor. He’s really impressive. The movie’s also profane and insane and hilarious, as you would expect from Don Coscarelli. I recommend it highly.

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned yet on Satellite News, but Amazon now has Volume XXIX listed for pre-order, with a release date of March 25, 2014. Sampo, if you still do the links that support Sattelite News, I’d love to use it for my pre-order!

The bonus commentary by Elvis on Bubba Ho-Tep is mind blowing and so on the mark that at moments it will have you wondering “what the hell?”

I am a decades long Phantasm Phreak, but with Bubba Ho-Tep, Don tapped into a completely different type of experience. The music is phenomenal. Bruce’s acting was as if he were possessed by Elvis. The story was captivating, thanks to Landsdale. The photography was beautifully executed. etc etc…

I saw it at the Angelika Film Theater in Dallas when Bubba first hit the screens. Blew. Me. Away. Glad I saw it on the big screen first.

When Pennell was confronting the mummy, I suddenly realized I was watching Dash Riprock.

There’s so much to admire about Bubba Ho – Tep. I’ve scratched the surface. An underrated and often unheard of horror masterpiece.

And, like Goshzilla stated, at times raunchy, gross, and irreverent as hell. Ultimately, human.

    Pure, elevated Coscarelli.

I really liked John Dies At The End,” but I loved Bubba Ho – Tep.
