Weekend Discussion Thread: What Eps Will Joel Pick?

This Thursday, Joel will present six episodes on the web. Everybody tweeted him what they wanted to see. Joel announced on Thursday that he has made his picks. What do you think he chose?

So, this isn’t a list of what you would LIKE to see. It’s your guess as to what we WILL see.

One note: I don’t know this for certain, but I imagine that they are not going to be able to show anything that hasn’t been released on DVD. I could be wrong.

My guess:

Pod People
Warrior of the Lost World
I Accuse My Parents
Space Mutiny
Werewolf
Final Sacrtice

What’s your pick?

I’m thinking Mitchell will be one of them. I’m curious what Mike movies he might pick.

  2. Green Switch says:

I want to think that he’ll avoid the obvious choice of Manos.

    If I had to guess:

-at least one Gamera movie, because there were five of them and they’re a part of the giant monster genre that was a fixture of MST3K

-I Accuse My Parents, because it’s his favorite episode

-Mitchell, because it’s his last episode and a fan favorite

-Santa Claus, because it’s close to that time of year and it’s something different from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

-Samson vs. the Vampire Women, because it has great host segments and movie segments, plus it’s Frank’s last episode

-The Final Sacrifice, because it’s often mentioned as one of the best of the Sci-Fi Channel episodes

I Accuse My Parents – Joels favorite
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (holiday time)
    Mitchell – Joel’s last
The Brain That Wouldnt Die – Mikes first
Red Zone Cuba – no reason , just a hunch
Zombie Nightmare (this FIRST aired on a Turkey Day Marathon)

**I would like to add for a future a weekend discussion thread we should have a Guess the Next Volume. It should be around the time we usually have been getting announcements which tends to be when the current release officially gets released**
My guesses Untamed Youth, Rocketship XM, Outlaw and The Thing That Couldnt Die which were on the Shout Factory Forum but they removed it due to spammers**

I think Sampo’s list is pretty close if not dead-on. Joel retweeted most or all of the responses he got on Twitter offering suggestions, and the four that seemed to come up the most were Pod People, Final Sacrifice, Werewolf, and Space Mutiny. Based solely on the weight to votes, I’m guessing those four will make the final running. The other two will probably be Joel episodes to balance it out, and Parents will probably be one of them since it’s Joel’s current favorite.

No clue what the sixth ep might be, but Warrior of the Lost World is as good a guess as any.

Well here are the episodes I wish he would pick:
    Wild Rebels
    I Accuse my parents
    Mitchell
    Time Chasers
    Werewolf
    Final Sacrifice

Yeah, that sounds like a reasonable selection. Both for Turkey Day and Volume 29.

I would assume that the next volume’s selections pop up in Sampo’s mailbox this week, perhaps?

If it is fan response – I will go with Santa Claus vs. The Martians, although I agree with Green Switch personally, I still think Manos will show – as will Mitchell. I’ll go with Godzilla vs. Megalon because of the monster movie motif (and if none of the relased movies can be shown, it makes sense for that one.) I accuse my Parents (if it is Joel’s fave.) I’ll also go with Soultaker since it had everyone involved from the Comedy Central era.

Several episodes coincidentally became available on Netflix again/anew, including Gamera vs Guiron, Devil Fish, Werewolf, Beginning of the End, and I Accuse My Parents.

    1. I Accuse My Parents (a favorite of his)
    2. Teenagers From Outer Space (the gang had so much fun doing this one)
    3. Manos (cause it’s Manos, that’s why!)
    4. Soultaker (he’s in it!)
    5. Blood Beast (the Turkey Day connection)
    6. Final Justice (gotta have some Joe Don Baker, and Mitchell may be too painful for Joel)

Sampo’s list is very close to my own, although I wouldn’t mind if “Final Sacrifice” was replaced with “Riding With Death”. Then again, that’s only because “RWD” has become one of my new favorites thanks to that infamous failed line delivery. “This can’t be? It’s Turkey Day?”

The Shout Factory email said that Joel will be announcing the details for Volume XXIX during the marathon, so we may have to wait a few days longer than usual.

As for the episodes in the marathon, the Turkey Day version of Blood Beast is a no-brainer, right? (Assuming somebody reminds Joel that it even exists.)

I heard him at the recent CT appearance, talking about picking six episodes for a con appearance a few years ago–
He hasn’t actually sat down and WATCHED many of the episodes since filming them–“I mean, I remember this is what I had to do for work; it’s like putting a camera at your desk all day and coming home and watching that”–so he has a sort of third-party fan-influenced idea of what episodes are “classics”.
I wasn’t sure I heard correctly when Joel mentioned picking three CC episodes and three Mike episodes for balance, and felt he had to include the “hilarious” Final Sacrifice, and took it on good authority that Gorgo was a classic. Oh, Joel, my lad, you haven’t watched these, have you?

Although he did confess, “Can someone explain, what’s the whole deal with Mitchell, why does that keep setting the fans off?”
Got about an hour, J, and we can tell you but, sadly, in the meet-and-greet after the show, I didn’t take the opportunity to help.

Should probably add he’s not that up on Season 6, either–
During the Q&A session, the audience basically turned it into a MSTie-fan con appearance, and one fanboy shouted out “When will Girls Town go to disk?”
Joel looked baffled, as if the fan was on drugs and he’d literally never heard of it: “Wait, w-what’s ‘Girls Town’, are you sure we’re even having the same conversation, here?”
(But then, you’d be hard pressed to find any fans who remembered it either.)

    We’ll probably see…
Pod People, cuz it’s a fan favorite
The Day the Earth Froze, cuz there’s a Sampo,
    Mitchell, cuz g’bye Joel
The Brain that Wouldn’t Die, cuz h’lo Mike
    Laserblast, cuz bye Comedy Central
and finally Final Sacrifice finally, just cuz.

I don’t really have much of a list for what he’ll play. That Joel and Shout! are doing it at all is pretty awesome. However, something I would hope Shout! would A) think to do and B) get the rights to do is have one of the Joel-hosted episodes from Volume XXIX, the contents of which they could even have Joel announce “on-air”, as the final episode. How cool would it be to watch to the end and not only find out, say, Jungle Goddess or The Painted Hills is on the next set, but here’s the episode to enjoy now and whet your appetite for the next set?

I think this is all really going to depend on the audience Shout is trying to reach. As much as I love Manos, I think it’s just way too obvious of a choice and stands out most in the minds of the more “casual” fan. I also agree with Sampo’s list but I would maybe put a Gamera movie in place of WotLW. Joel said during the Q&A at Cinematic Titanic that Werewolf and “the one with Rowesdower” we’re his favorite Mike episodes, so I think these are safe bets. Then again, this was all supposed to be based on Twitter votes (and then probably whittled down based on episode availability) so maybe those didn’t align with Joel’s personal choice…

On another note, as per usual for me with the old Turkey Day marathon, I will miss it due to family obligations (and I can’t fire up the ol’ VHS this time!), does anyone think there will be any way to watch it again later?

That news about Volume 29 makes a ton of sense, now that I think about it.

I would be shocked and disappointed if they didn’t have the stream available all weekend, say, starting Friday at noon. Rifftrax did something similar last year and it was available til sometime in the spring.

If this is successful, this could be a tradition – get a former MST member to curate six episodes every year. Mike next year, Trace, Kevin… and so on.

I do hope that there are enough servers to handle the demand. I’ve heard enough horror stories about the live streaming shows Rifftrax tried to pull off. Hopefully Shout’s taken that into account.

The Shout Factory email said that Joel will be announcing the details for Volume XXIX during the marathon…
So what are the odds that after the fifth episode, Joel’s announcement will go something like “Here’s what’s coming up in Vol.XXIX: aaa, bbb, ccc, and this little number:” [cut to a live stream of an episode coming to DVD soon]…?

Sorry, #19 and 20, I tweeted Shout Factory with the same question, since I will be having Thanksgiving at a house with questionable internet access, and got this reply: “Sorry. It’s a one-day only live event.”
Cue rending of garments, gnashing of teeth. I really really really want to watch this. I love communal MST3k events and I wasn’t around for the original Turkey Day marathons! Could the new marathon segments or bumpers possibly be available somehow so I can re-create the marathon with my own DVDs?
For the episodes, I think Sampo is right on with his list. It was surprising to me that I saw a lot of tweets for WotLW. My list was not retweeted. :-( It’s a great episode, just didn’t know it was so loved. I’m really pulling for Riding with Death, though. Turkeys, hoooo!

@2, 22–I think people prefer something they enjoy to something with “historical significance.” Most of the starting/leaving/ending episodes aren’t as popular as many non-event episodes. (Okay, i’ll exempt Mitchell/Brain from that.)

    Hmm..

I’m pretty much on board with the one’s Sampo picked as being probable. I did, however, tweet Joel and suggested THE HUMAN DUPLICATORS. It would be nice to see that one, but I’m not holding my breath.

What I’m wondering about XXIX is if the trend of adding a bonus disc of OOP episodes will continue? (I hope so!)

I’m also very curious which Mike eps he will choose. Of course, the eps are chosen by the fans, but since Joel has the final word, it also means those are HIS favorite eps.
However, I really WON’T be too disappointed if the selection doesn’t necessarily span the entirety of the show. Permit me a moment of gooeyness, but there would be something very nostalgic, very warm, very comfortable about episodes like “Pod People”, “I Accuse My Parents”, and “Day The Earth Froze”. By the way, I think all three of the above episodes get chosen because they’re all Community faves with great host segments, so there’s more going on than just the movie. Great stuff.
Personally, I would also love to see “Warrior of the Lost World”, but I don’t think it would be an overall popular choice.

You guys have the straight angle covered very well and I can’t add to that. But- are there any episodes Joel might avoid because they didn’t turn out well in his opinion, or which features him too heavily? (I’ve gathered over the years that he was shy and not comfortable in front of the camera.)

So for fun we might run the existing lists through this filter.

  40. First of all, I’m proud to announce that Joel retweeted this tweet of mine in the thread where we were suggesting episodes for the upcoming Turkey Day Marathon:

@WalkingE @JoelGHodgson Quite agree. That shot of locusts climbing up a postcard — breathtaking. Bert I. Gordon was a friggin’ genius.

That done… seeing as how there’s no such thing as clairvoyance, there’s no way in hell we can really guess what episodes Joel will pick, so I’m going to list six that I’d like for him to show:

    1. King Dinosaur. I love how the incidental music mocks the characters in the final scene.
    2. Gamera Vs. Guiron. “Hello! Thank you!”
    3. Manos, The Hands Of Fate. Imho, the definitive MST3K episode.
    4. I Accuse My Parents. Joel’s favorite, after all.
    5. The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. Mike’s first episode as host.
    6. Space Mutiny. My all-time favorite SciFi Channel episode, narrowly edging out The Incredibly Strange Creatures Etc.
