Several people have alerted me to the fact that the DVD and BluRay for the Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy comedy “The Heat” contains “…hilarious audio commentaries featuring Melissa McCarthy, Director Paul Feig, the Original Mystery Science Theater 3000 Guys…”
I tweeted Feig yesterday and he confirms that refers to Joel, Josh and Trace.
If somebody gets it, give us a report in the comments, please.
The DVD is in stores now. I picked it up yesterday and will probably watch it tonight. On the back it says, somewhat ambiguously, Special Features: The Commentary Track In Which The Director Of The Heat Talks Endlessly About The Heat. Should be good!

My blu-ray is on the way from Amazon. I’ll let you know what I think.

I picked up the bluray as a gift for my wife yesturday- that was the only one that explicitly said the mst3k commentary. Cause i compared dvd and bluray when looking at extras at the store. I have to wait a few days to give it to her though (ugh patience)

So I have to buy “The Heat” now? Closest I’ll get to a Cinematic Titanic studio show, I guess…

Kind of an odd movie for them to be commenting on. Was the director a fan of the show or CT, or were they involved with the movie’s production somehow?

“The Original Lineup from Mystery Science Theater 3000 Comments on The Heat doesn’t quite rise to the highest levels of MST3K insanity, but there are some good punchlines scattered throughout this commentary.”
Sounds interesting, wouldn’t mind listening to it if I get the chance.
And @5, The Heat was directed by Paul Feig. Feig was a co-creator and show runner of the show ‘Freaks and Geeks’. J. Elvis was a writer on F&G, and Joel & Trace both had guest starring roles. I guess Paul is good friends and wanted them to add a commentary track just for fun.

Surreal. It’s like Joel and the robots have time traveled from the past to our present. Are we in a paradox bubble?
Joel: Come on, it will be fun. We can travel to a future where not only does riffing occur all the time on stored media, but it is considered bonus material. Come on! Let’s do this, guys! Gypsy, initiate project Tock Tick Tock.
Gypsy: Stat!
Servo: Will we be back in time for dinner? Get it? “In time?”
Crow: Will there be flying cars?

The Heat was good fun, though I didn’t enjoy it as much as Feig’s previous projects “Freaks & Geeks” or “Bridesmaids” (nor his 2 hilarious books “Kick Me” & “Superstud”, the great episodes of “Arrested Development” or “The Office” that he directed, etc.). My wife really got a kick out of it, though, & we both love MST3K, so this is a natural pick-up when the price drops a little.

Paul Feig also appeared in Joel’s “TV Wheel” special. I’m pretty sure he played the diabolical Vic Lawson.

Am I first?
I rented the Blu Ray last night. I think the commentaries (and there are several) are only on the Blu Ray – at least from what the video store had.
So, how was it? Ladies and gentlemen, what we have here is practically a new episode of MST3K!! (or maybe a ‘lost’ episode since it has J. Elvis with Trace and Joel.)
It was very funny, very casual, I wasn’t sure if they were going to actually comment on the movie, or riff it – it’s basically a full on riff. I really hope this catches on, it was always my fever dream hope that the guys could do DVD commentaries. I know the director for this is their buddy, which explains things, but I hope they get to do more of these.
In short: Yes, I’m buying a Sandra Bullock buddy comedy on Blu Ray!

I am ashamed to say this but I’m probably one of the few folks left that don’t have a Blu Ray player but this might be just the excuse for me to go ahead and get one now.

Beware, it’s on Blu-ray, but not the stand alone disc, it’s on the COMBO PACK version. Lost $20 finding that out.

Thanks for the shopping tips, guys! I’ll be sure to pick up the combo pack version… and then look into investing in a BluRay player. They’re getting more affordable these days, right?

WARNING WARNING WARNING
Careful! The commentary is only available on the Ultra Violet Triple Decker Combo Box Pack Special Edition Set. (Comes with a PVC rubber space-suited bendy mini-Sandra Bullock figure key chain. Her facial features can be seen clearly through the space helmet’s sun visor.)
Wait, I’m thinking of the future release of GRAVITY.
Never mind.

I got a cheapo Blu Ray player for about $40.00 I only own one Blu Ray, this will eventually be my second. That’s the rub though, and why I had to buy the player, they’ve started making all the DVDs barebones and put all the extras on the Blu Ray Combo packs. And I’m sure a lot of you are like me and actually are more interested in the extras than the movies most of the time!
and if anyone has a Family Video nearby, just wait a month or two, they put out used Blu Rays for only $5. That’s where I’ll be getting my copy.

I checked out a few minutes of this today and my only complaint is that the audio is mixed like most DVD commentaries…. The movie audio is always low in the background. It is not ducked like MST or a RiffTrax VOD. I am going to do some ripping tonight to try to remix i. I am hoping for the best.
