I used up this year’s vacation budget going to the CT show in Milwaukee. I hope they’ll be taping this, like the Musuem of TV & Radio did for their MST3K event years ago.

The moderator, Steve Darnall, is also the publisher of Nostalgia Digest (they have a podcast) and the host of the radio show Those Were The Days.
I met him at a local convention during his writing days, and he’s an affable, funny man. He should do a great job.

Q: Why honor just these 4 guys? Frank wasn’t an original cast member … More like a promotion for the final CT tour…..not that there’s anything wrong with that….

#6: This event was initiated by the Museum. We had no control over who they invited and/or who might have declined. And since there’s only one more CT show after the event, and it’s in Philadelphia, I don’t see it being a very effective promotional event-even if it WAS one!

Well since someone else brought up CT’s final show. I was thinking it would be nice to have a nice article on this website after the final show with a brief overview of the history of CT with a definitive listing of every show as to venue, date and movie etc. Final thoughts from the cast would be nice too. I am so sad to see it end as it was top shelf comedy. But all things must end and I’ll just have to look forward to their next projects.

It does seem like Kevin should have been included, at least. But any publicity for MST3K/RT/CT is a good thing.

Nobody likes to discuss the falling out between the original cast and the ending cast of MST3K, but it’s difficult to ignore after this announcement. This is an MST3K-related event, not Rifftrax or CT so really the entire cast should be there. If nothing else, Kevin should be there as one of the original cast. The fact that he’s not there suggests that the two teams really don’t get along, which is unfortunate.

Mary Jo doesn’t seem upset with the list of those invited.
I do agree about Kevin, though.

#11: Just because certain people aren’t there doesn’t mean they weren’t invited. People have their own lives and commitments. Besides, the museum is likely not paying them to attend. They’d probably have to pay their own travel and expenses to get out there.

#11: We’ve all had a falling out? Wow, I didn’t know. Wish someone would have alerted me so I wouldn’t have gone to Coast City Comic Con with Bill and Kevin. Again, none of us had any control over who the museum invited, or who was able to attend. The fact that some folks aren’t there suggests nothing of the kind.

  15. I’ve been talking with the organizer for the event, and he told me everybody was invited, and this was the best way to time it so the most cast members could attend.

I just suggested a post-event screening of an episode and he liked the idea, so that may happen.

I had my fingers crossed that maybe they would do something Friday night somewhere since they’ll be in town (presumably Friday night, but of course I don’t know that for sure) since I have to work on Saturday. :( Otherwise I would be there for sure. The ONE Saturday out of the month I have to work no less.

My apologies Mary Jo, fans are wont to speculate about their heroes and sometimes cause offense in the process. I’ve always known that you’ve got along well with the Rifftrax crew and recorded some Riffs of your own in addition to performing on CT, but it seems like the rest of the CT crew never have anything to do with the Rifftrax crew and vice versa. Anyway, I apologize for saying anything inappropriate.

    Hey #18

Remember that when you “speculate” you make a “spec” out of “u” and “late”. Or something. Anyway, it “seems like the rest of the CT crew never have anything to do with the Rifftrax crew and vice versa”. Is simply not true.

Why do you want there to be this so called rift with the riffers? There is no war. Stop suggesting one. We all get along.

In fact Bill Corbett just appeared in a video I made.

  22. Trace, and Mary Jo, I have to assume the talk of a rift is intended to provoke you to work with each other more, and while I won’t pile on, I’d be lying if I said I admit sympathetic to the cause. I’d love to see a Rifftrax featuring any or all of the CT crew, and one can only imagine the speculation about infighting is to either prompt it to happen or to justify the fact that it hasn’t.

Maybe if you and Joel popped by when Kevin, Mike and Bill re-riff Santa Claus Conquers the Martians at the Belcourt next month, all this speculation would die down…

  23. Hey Cabot! says:

Trace, I apologize for coming off as though I’m trying to create a rivalry. ChicagoMSTie Mike has it right; we all just want to see a large-scale collaboration between the MST3K cast once again and we can’t understand why there hasn’t been such a collaboration in the many years since MST3K went off the air. The only conclusion left to many of us is that there has been a creative falling-out. Such creative differences happen, they’re nothing unusual, but they still make the fans sad just the same as when a great band like The Beatles break up. It would be great to see some of the CT cast make an appearance for Rifftrax’ treatment of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, but I won’t hold out hope of that; instead that CT makes a return in one way or another. I look forward to seeing you this Saturday!

#23: I think much of it is due to logistics and money. There are very few ops for everyone to all get together in one place, make money and still have the creative freedom they had back in the day. Even CT is calling it quits because the logistics are tough with everyone in different cities. They still cross paths through conventions and such, and if they’re happy with that, all power to them. It’s rare for people in the entertainment industry (or any workplace, really) to work with the same group year after year after year. We’re lucky the MST cast were together as long as they were. Besides, I think there’s more MST-type activity going on the last while than there’s been in some time. Sure, we can dream. But enjoy the riches, I say.

  25. ITT: people from the affectionately-named “Quitter’s Brigade” (CT) gloss over their possible cold war called “RiftTrax.”

Meanwhile, I’m in the audience @ this and I was surprised to see a bunch of mike clips just now. I always assumed that the show died when Joel left…. methinks I’ll have to put aside my “#MikeHijackedTheShow” twitter/campaign and maybe for the first time in my life acknowledge that there were “MST3K” episodes after 1993!

    /me parties like it’s 1994! Woo!

Also man this setup sucks (no elevated stage, and the clips are on an overhead projector that ought to be displaying higher up cuz its hard to see the whole screen thru ppl’s heads.

  26. btw if anyone wants to have the cheap seats experience @ this panel check out http://imgur.com/BSsL448 >> I’m pretty sure you can make out the tip of Frank’s head under the “iv” of NBC/Universal on the back screen. Gee I wonder who sponsors this?

Thank you to the cast for making the trip out to my hometown. The panel was fun and hilarious. I really couldn’t see much from the seating too, but it was mentioned that this was being recorded for broadcast/podcast. If anyone finds a link to this, please share. Thanks again.

Wish I could have made the event, but just couldn’t work out the trip. I did watch on the live feed, which was pretty difficult due to some broadcast issues. The moderator let us on-line viewers know that they will be posting the entire event next week (I think he said on Youtube). I’ll definitely watch again. It sounded like the guys were having fun.

  29. I was, quite naturally, at the show. The seating arrangement was a little clumsy; I wasn’t far back but I managed to sit behind the tallest person ever, so the lack of elevated stage was felt. I’m a little sympathetic about this, though; John Geiger, who organized the event, was unable to do much work on this until Monday because he was overseeing the National Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony last weekend, so a lot was left undone until today (unfortunately including some A/V prep work, for which he took a little playful ribbing from the cast).

The show was good overall; Joel, Trace and Frank talked about the history of the show, including what prompted each of them to leave it. I would have to say from my perspective there is nothing even resembling a rift, at least not between Joel and those who stayed after his departure. He had nothing but respect for Mike and even said that he made a point of watching the Sci-Fi seasons of the show and felt that Mike, Kevin and Bill made an excellent show (so suck it, haters!). Also, I got the sense that Joel really does look back on all this fondly, specifically because during the clip montage, I noticed him singing along with “He tried to kill me with a forklift.”

Technical and logistical issues aside, I think the show was a great way to spend two hours, and I’m not just saying that because I got a special thanks from the museum for all the work I did spreading the word about this event. Although, yes, that was totally me they were thanking.

I got to make my apology to Trace and it was a relief. I thanked them all for their comedic work and when I told them they all looked great, Joel asked if I was coming on to the group to which I responded “Would you like me to?” I got to ask a question about laughter on the show (particularly Trace’s hysterical giggling in Danger Death Ray and Deathstalker) and what the laughter was like making such jokes in the writing room, which Joel got to answer. Frank also clarified that the laughter in the William Conrad Fridge Alert sketch was actually staged. Joel really skewered some poor guy who asked a question about Joel’s audition for UHF, because the question was supposed to be about MST3K. However, it was all in good fun and everyone had a great laugh.

During the signing, I asked some questions about the show, in particular about a mystifying joke in City Limits and Escape 2000: “There’s got to be a cash machine around here somewhere!” However, they had no recollection of the joke at all. I think most of the finer details of the making of the show are a total blur to them by now, since it’s been so many years since the show ended. My fiancee couldn’t even speak to Joel because she was so overcome with emotion, so I goaded her into a picture with the guys. I wanted to get a picture with them too but they wanted to leave by that point and I didn’t want to delay them. I did however get to shake their hands and thank them individually for a great show.

I’m glad I finally got to meet some of the guys. I only hope CT can make a comeback someday.

I was in the middle section but in the very last row. I saw Joel’s hands only, the top of Trace’s head including eyes but then nothing of Trace, and I could see Frank’s whole face when some guy got up to go to the restroom. It was marvelous being there. I did get close up pictures when they were signing autographs. Be still my heart! I am looking forward to seeing the show again so I can see what I missed as far as their facial expressions and comments which made people laugh but I couldn’t see/hear.

  35. Fantastic fun panel. I could sense the rift between Joel and the audience members… I just wish that Frank and Roger Waters would get over their feud and perform together again. (because who DOESN’T have a feud with Roger Waters, amirightpeople?)

I could occasionally see Frank from the left side of the audience. Once in a while I’d catch a glimpse of Joel’s head. In all though, it was a well presented event, despite the problems with the MacBook. I will also admit I was a bit surprised by the amount of Mike clips on the montage. It made me happy though, because I had been worried they would keep all clips to the era with the 4 (actually 3) who were slated to be there.

I have a thought Joel’s appreciation for Mike as host has a lot to do with “reverse bias” how most people would feel weird seeing themselves on screen. But then again, who cares and why does it matter?? It’s all just one big show with jokes and styles for everyone in the 10(+) year run.

Too bad Mary Jo absolutely loathes the other CT members, which of course was definitely the reason she wasn’t there. No doubt about that.

I would find it apropos to have Mike (Touch) Connors induct the cast since his show “Mannix,” may be the most riffed-about reference and that it preceded “MST3K,” on KTMA-TV 23’s schedule!!
