Why all the VODs? I don’t have a DVD burner on my computer. I’d like the Rifftrax Live to be on a hard copy DVD. Then I could purchase more than one copy, one for me and one for my grandson.

Sigh, now we’re getting VOD complaints about things that aren’t even VODs…

This was also my feeling, until some of my Rifftrax DVDs started to disintegrate. Then I thought, “Gee, if I had this as a digital copy, I could just burn another one.”

(This is aside from the whole non-VOD aspect here.)

Funny stuff. What a bad movie.

I have a friend who’s been a professional music & film critic for decades and when he heard Rifftrax was doing this movie, protested, “But, but, it’s a satire.”

Maybe, but it’s a really crappy, stupid satire!

Gummo @5: Yeah, never understood the complaints that Starship Troopers was a bad choice because it’s “satire.” The original novel, sure, but this is just a big dumb action movie that sold itself as exactly that. Does anyone seriously believe the film-makers were aiming for a high-brow audience looking to appreciate a rich satire? They shoe-horned the occasional “Want To Know More” news bit as a nod to the source material, but aside from those few seconds of film this it’s wall-to-wall cheese.

Loved how Kevin responded directly to that complaint during the riff, in the middle of one of the many bug fight splatterfest sequences: “The satire, it’s so cutting!”

Isn’t this the MP3 version? I don’t think they were able to get the rights to release a DVD or VOD. I liked the Live version of Starship Troopers, so I guess I’ll grab the MP3. Maybe I can see the Live version again in 50 years when it’s public domain. Good reason to stay alive. :)

I think we all need to accept the fact that DVDs are going the way of the CD. It’s probably just not that profitable to release these on DVD. (actually Starship Troopers on DVD is a moot point anyway since they didn’t get rights for anything but a live show I think). For the same reason, I doubt that CT will release their final shows on DVD either.

Guys, not a VOD. Just newly recorded studio MP3. They couldn’t get the rights to release the movie as a VOD.

@5 I like the movie and generally every Verhoeven movie not named Showgirls, and when I heard this was the sub
for Twilight I was like “Cool!”. Heck, I liked Pyscho 2 and it’s one of the best VOD’s I’ve watched.

The circular firing squad with automatic weapons might by the best part of the film. Or is it that the humans were surprised that the bugs were intelligent after they’d already managed to harness an asteroid and hurl it at us across several light years with enough accuracy to not just hit our planet but a particular city.

Here are the thoughts on VOD vs MP3 from Rifftrax on their Facebook page:

Rifftrax – We have the mp3 of Starship Troopers coming first, and then next month is another Harry Potter riff! (VODs work better for us and for people watching our stuff who can’t sync up the DVDs, which is why we’ve done so many.)

Ronnie Slaughter – I do understand, but it kinda was the whole purpose of Rifftrax, to move on to more mainstream movies

RiffTrax – That’s true, and ironically enough, during those formative years we had a lot of people asking us to do the old, crappy B-movies like the guys did back in the MST3K days!
We are hoping to mix it up again, but we’ve been around long enough to know what works for our business, and unfortunately MP3s don’t always do so well. It’s hard for us to justify doing something that doesn’t allow us to continue making more – we are a business, after all. And the fact that the VODs are better for more people – we don’t have to worry about things like Director’s Cuts, PAL vs. NTSC, or syncing, or even asking people to embarrass themselves by renting a movie like Twilight – it just makes the whole product that much more appealing for the average consumer.
All this being said, there does seem to be demand for the last two Harry Potters, so you can expect Pt 1 in the next few weeks!

    @#1:
I had a simliar problem with my computer being too slow and outdated to burn DVDs too. It took several hours and was a huge hastle. Then I researched it for about 2 seconds and found a nice external DVD/CD burner for about 40 bucks….it works great and plays disks as well…it’s a nice alternative to burning out your computers internal drives and it’s a great investment! VODs are the wave of the future man, out are the hula-hoops and horse drawn carriages! There are ways to make VODs work…you just have to give it a try!

  19. I listened to the shower scene, now Gorilla Gram free, and cannot imagine why they didn’t just make that part of the live show. It was, after all, the LEAST VIOLENT PART OF THE DAMN MOVIE, and last I checked, nobody has ever been killed by a breast, except that Woody Allen movie, and that was a fictional giant mutated breast.

“Starship Troopers” has about ten to fifteen minutes of good satire, concentrated in the high school scenes at the beginning and some of the army scenes. Everything else is just big, dumb action.

And it’s big, dumb action WITHOUT THE DAMN POWERED ARMOR!

A “Starship Troopers” movie should feature dozens of guys in Iron Man-style armor dropping out of space in pods and then flying around killing bugs. At this rate, the best adaptation of the book is Halo: ODST, and at least that features the cast of Firefly.

Aliens is also frequently considered a better adaptation of the Starship Troopers book.
