It appears that some of these will feature movies that will have had full-length riffs — such as “Best of RiffTrax: Villains” — and some will feature movies they have never done — such as “Best of RiffTrax: ’90s Cyber Thrillers.”
Something New from RiffTrax…RiffTrax has something new for us, and I’m guessing they’re an outgrowth of the “Talkin’ RiffTrax” videos (like this one, if you haven’t caught any of them). They’re being called “Best of RiffTrax” and they’re essentially a collection excepts from three movies and riffs from Mike, Kevin and Bill.

Purchased them last night. Hope to watch tonight. Looks like fun.

Got the email for this. Confused as to how they cleared the rights for these.

I’d buy a full length VOD of The Lawnmower man, but I wouldn’t buy a clip show.
And yeah, I wonder if they are using very small bits to somehow fall under Fair Use , or actually licensing them?

To clarify, there are actually two similar but distinct things going on here:
The Best of Rifftrax: Villains is truly a best-of, in the sense that it’s old material which has been turned into a clip show.
However, Rifftrax Special: 90’s Cyber Thrillers is entirely new material, not a best-of. It’s still shorter segments of a few movies, so that part is similar, but the names are different for a reason (“Best of” and “Special” each indicating something a bit different).
Just to avoid any confusion.

Bought these, but I’ll be skipping any in the future that involve material that I’ve already purchased. It’s fun to hear them sitting around the table and bantering about the films, but not enough to pay for the clips again. Having said that, the “90’s Cyber Thrillers” was fun.

Hmmm, interesting. Will definitely buy any and all “specials”, probably buy the first “best of” just to see what its like. I do enjoy the Talkin’ Rifftrax, so we’ll see.

The 90s Cyber Thriller special was the first “meh” thing I’ve seen from Rifftrax in a long time. Can’t really get a rhythm going and it just wasn’t that funny (IMHO).

This would be a good best of for me because I have a really hard time figuring out which VOD’s to watch otherwise.
Speaking of – is there anything close to a consensus top 10 or so rifftrax VODs? I rather liked Prisoners of the lost universe and Abraxas, but there are just so many at this point that i’ve really fallen behind.

@#8 Are you asking for consensus in a community famous for its highly varied tastes?

More seriously, I can say for myself that Crater Lake Monster, Frankenstein Island, Buffalo Rider, Guy From Harlem, and Breaker, Breaker are among the better ones. I can also say that Galaxy Invader and Curse of Bigfoot were very weak, and various others were sort of middling.
Then again, I thought Prisoners of the Lost Universe was weak, so who can say?

@8- Ghosthouse is our favorite but rest of top 10 in no particular order is:
Breaker Breaker
Crater Lake Monster
The Guy from Harlem
Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny
Viva Knievel
Mutant
The Galaxy Invader
Tourist Trap
Troll 2 (should be noted that Bill & Kevin aren’t on this one, but it is still really funny and an incredibly dumb movie)

Bought the Cyber special, but not the “best of” show. The Cyber special was good, but sadly it had me wanting to see the full riffed movie. As for the best of show I agree with others that have said it’s not worth it to repurchase material.
Plus (I can’t believe I’m criticizing RT as I rarely do) I think it’s sort of a waste of energy when they could be putting out the Batman serial quicker. Regarding the Batman shorts I think we all were happy when the project was started, but I seriously have to question the logic of putting them out at such sporadic intervals. It’s now gotten to the point that with each new one I have to search my memory to go “what the hell happened on the last episode? (and yes I do know there is a quick back story on each one)” Like I said I rarely complain but in this one case… yeah, not too happy.

…and realized I spelled “Lombardi” wrong in my previous comment. So maybe RT shouldn’t be listening to my rantings… :-P

@ #11: I imagine the reason for the slow release of the Batman serial is so that they don’t experience the burnout they had Way Back in the Day with the Commando Cody serial.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone!

The VODs we keep going back to (in no particular order):
The Guy From Harlem
Buffalo Rider
Viva Kneivel
Future Force
Galaxy Invader
The Brainiac
Cool As Ice
Bermuda Triangle
Psycho II*
When A Stranger Calls Back*
The Apple*
*These as much for the jaw-dropping stupidity of the movies themselves –movies with real budgets and professionals behind the cameras and even with actual stars — as much as the riffing.

I’m pretty sure all the movies in these two compilations are all part of the Sony library. And Sony of course owns the rights to Starship Troopers. I’m guessing these are toe-dippers in the relationship between Rifftrax and Sony, and if sales are strong and people seem to like ’em, Sony might allow a few titles to be riffed in their entirety and sold as VOD.

Re: My previous post #16.
Meh, I should have looked first. Looks like Highlander & The Happening are Fox titles. Of course, Sony may have acquired them recently for video distribution, but probably I’m just wrong.

I bought the Cyber one and liked it, but could they please, PLEASE finish off the Harry Potter films?? I had to sit through the last one with my nieces and nephews at the theater (under strict instructions from all that I was NOT to add any commentary), and the whole time I wanted to hear the guys riffing it.
You finished the Twilight series, so do the same for HP – PLEASE!!!

@Sitting Duck – Good point. I didn’t think of that.

I second a ‘consensus list’ of some sort..or even a comparison list–“if you like this MST title, you will love ______.” It would help many of us out who are way behind on VODs and want the best of the best. My personal favorites (in no particular order):
Galaxy Invader
Birdemic (Live Riff)
Devil’s Hands
Laser Mission
Guy From Harlem
Jack the Giant Killer (Live riff)

#15 – Do you really think Psycho II is that stupid? I mean, it’s not GREAT by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not AWFUL either, in my humble estimation. Psycho III is stupider (but still, does not drop to the level of godawful HORRIBLE).

#21 – Yeah, actually, I do. “Let’s return the barely functioning serial killer to the childhood home where all the horror happened and leave him there alone to stew in his demented memories.” I mean, what social service agency on earth would DO that!??
And how the hell was the motel open all that time? And, and…
I hate horror/sf movies where you not have to suspend disbelief, but all logic and simple common sense, to make them work.
