Short, but good article. And Joel gives soms nice props to Mike. Only nitpick is that Mr. Penhollow says Mallon is still making cartoons at mst3k.com. But that’s one journalistic error I can take pleasure in, ya know? Joel talks about the split with Mallon. Basically “things started to be uncomfortable” for Joel on set after Jim refused to stay producer and allow him to direct the movie. That was new to me. I’ve heard it more in terms of general creative differences that built to a head. It refers to Joel’s decision to keep the peace by departing as “one of his great personal tragedies.” Article says Joel was “shut out of anything MST3K related by Mallon for years after (as Dr. F says at the end of MST3K:TM, “Every party has a pooper.”). It refers to Joel and Mallon’s current relationship as a “shaky truce.” So, if anyone on here is still even remotely tempted to pay extra for the ultra lame Jim/Gypsy signed boxset, that ought to help put things in perspective. More clear than ever why Trace was uneasy to work with Mallon again as mentioned in the podcast from a few weeks ago.

Yes, Joel has taken a number of opportunities to be a gent with respect to Mike. Not that I had any reason to believe he wouldn’t be, but it’s nice see anyway.
