Proving that there are no ideas so bad they won’t still be had by network television decades later.

How did they get the rights to this? As far as I know, Universal owns this movie…

This is actually a surprisingly decent movie. Obviously nowhere near in the class of the original Psycho, but compared to other horror movies, it’s solid.

Yeah, you know the general storyline of the movie is decent, and it’s not completely awful. Still doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy the hell out of the Rifftrax release.

Psycho III would have been a better choice, though.

I saw this movie when it came out in the theater. At the time I thought it was pretty okay, actually. In the samples, though, Mike & company are good as usual at picking apart the flaws… or just being silly.

This might be the highest-profile VOD they’ve done. The film was surprisingly successful, and critics thought it wasn’t bad. Psycho III, on the other hand…

Kudos to RT for getting the rights.

Between Mst3k, Cinematic Titanic, Film Crew, and Rifftrax, this is the first movie the gang has riffed that I own. In fact, I just watched it last month. I think it is a terrific sequel made by people who care, but I will still get the RT version.

  8. FANTASTIC! I’ve been a big fan of the Psycho films for years, and contrary to popular sentiment, I find Psycho II to be the worst of the bunch (cheap story with a huge retcon twist, a comparatively wooden and inaccessible Norman, and Meg Tilly, etc. — eek). Glad they’re cashing in on the Psycho renaissance this year (with the “Hitchcock” film and the excellent “Bates Motel” series on A&E), and I hope they follow it up with Psycho III and IV (both a little rough around the edges, but much more interesting from a character perspective, and much more in line with the original Psycho). And, of course, Gus Van Sant’s 1998 Psycho remake is just begging to be riffed.

I am also a bit perplexed at how they’re able to offer this as a VOD, though — maybe they’re moving into new territory with their business model

So awesome. I love that they were able to get the rights to this film. I watched and loved the Rifftrax version. Psycho II is actually a very watchable film in its own right. I always found Perkins to be riveting as Norman even in the sequels. But, Mike, Bill and Kevin deservedly point out the enormous flaws and just make the whole thing so much more enjoyable.

I loved the Birdemic references. To me, Birdemic is the pinnacle of Rifftrax and I will always welcome callbacks.

I’d love to see them do Psycho III.

  10. Maybe they’re spending the money they got to buy Twilight on these VODs. I never could figure out why the makers of Twilight would want to sell their movie for riffing when they’re still printing truckloads of money off of it. They’ll come back later and say they couldn’t get the rights and what ya gonna do? That would be fine with me. I don’t give a damn about Twilight. I like these older titles.

I do better with really bad films. My favorite so far is The Guy from Harlem. The flubbed lines. The terrible fight scenes. The ridiculous premise that the CIA needed the Guy from Harlem’s help. The plot’s continuous encroachment into soft core.

RT had some many areas of opportunity, and they hit it out of the park every time. In my view, RT has never been funnier than on than on that movie.

I tend to get absorbed in the plots of good movies.

This was a really great one. It looks like the B-movies are far more worth their time than the Blockbusters these days.

I would’ve prefered they riff the failed BATES MOTEL pilot from 1987, but this looks okay. PSYCHO II is a good movie, but looks like it could be funny to riff.

I’d actually prefer they do Psycho III. That one’s a hoot & a holler!

I love Rifftrax, so I’m not grouch here, but the riff doesn’t quite work. The film is too static, too expository to riff. It’s really not a junky title. Unnecessary, OF COURSE, but it’s really not a terrible movie aching to be spanked.

And if Rifftrax has access to the Universal vault of craptaculars now, why not Xanadu? Jaws: The Revenge? Or even Cop and a 1/2 (they mention that one in the riff)? The B-movie nerds could list 100 more.

Psycho II is a weird choice.

Still, a fresh VOD is always welcome. Keep ’em coming, guys.

And, as always, Gymkata. Dear god, do Gymkata. It was Ray Harryhausen’s final wish. DO IT FOR RAY.

  19. I’ve always hated this movie because of the idea that the Vera Miles character, who was very sane and even tempered at the end of the original, is all obsessed and vindictive in this one. She’s an evil harpy who uses and endangers her own daughter, who ends up answering for the crimes of some batty old broad (Norman’s “real” mother-pfft) who wasn’t in 95% of the movie. This movie was completely misguided from page one. You could tell none of the cast wanted to be there.

So while the riffing was pretty good, all I can think of is how I’d really like to kick this movie in the balls.

@3 – It’s not that bad at all–Director Richard Franklin got his start working with Hitchcock, and writer Tom Holland went on to become THE mad genius of 80’s horror. And yes, III’s pretty pointless if not a downright well-meaning stinker for Perkins.

Oh man, Rifftrax should do a non-Psycho Anthony Perkins movie called Edge of Sanity (a weird, sorta smutty Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde knockoff). THAT one would be lots of fun to see riffed.

“Well meaning stinker”. I believe most horrible movie’s mean well. They are trying to send a message or simply just entertain. They don’t realize how bad they really are… until Rifftrax gets a hold of them. HA! I see crappy movies. They don’t even know they’re crap. Sorry, just had a Sixth Sense moment. :P

Chiming in a bit late here. Did anyone else notice that the kid in the diner is playing Ms Pac-Man, but the sound effects are from the original Pac Man? Or am I just that much of a geek? Or….

be found in the market. It has a 2-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing one.

Aided by the Pills rapidly getting best tablet pc all of the direct device

we should expect to witness it develop worldwide recognition for countless years.

Not to poop on the movie (after all, I’m not a professional) but I can imagine this being comparatively inexpensive to get the rights to riff. Universal has always undervalued Psycho II. In the early days of DVD, Psycho II was one of the movies they let Goodtimes Video license to release their own DVD. Rights now reverted back to Universal, they’ve released it as a 2 pack DVD with Psychos 3 and IV: The Beginning for under 10 bucks. Doesn’t seem to have even been released on blu-ray.

Meanwhile, the OOP Soundtrack CD and album is on the market for beaucoup bucks. Drag. I only have it on audio cassette.

    What’s an audio cassette, Daddy?

Shut up, I hate your youth, that’s what an audio cassette is.

Castle Monster @19, you are of course entitled to your opinion as to why you think Psycho II isn’t very good, but I just wanted to add this: If my sister disappeared, and I tried to find her, and stumbled upon a lunatic and the skeletal remains of his mom in a fruit cellar, I might hold some kind of crazy grudge, too.

Besides, your opinion of Lila’s sanity is based on the compressed events of a few days. Who knows what kind of crazy skeletons might be in HER closet?
