Joel Will Be ‘Riffing Myself’ in Tucson Tonight

I could swear I checked Joel’s site a couple of days ago and there was nothing there… but now it says Joel is doing a “Riffing Myself” show at the Loft Cinema in Tucson, Az. TONIGHT at 7 p.m. local time. Sorry for the late notice.

Get tickets here.

He seems more comfortable by riffing alone. That explains a lot.

What an awesome show! Joel did the story of his life through a slideshow, and it was thoroughly fascinating. The real highlight of the night was witnessing Joel’s dad Bill riff a slideshow about Tucson! An intimate Q&A session wrapped things up where Joel revealed more tidbits about himself and the show. When asked if CT might come to town, Joel said that they are all booked up for the year.

I finally got to ask Joel my question about Sidehackers, and yes, it turns out that nobody at CC was paying attention to what they were doing back then, and that’s how that messed up movie got through. I was always curious since CC provided them that movie if CC would have been okay with it coming back for air uncut. Joel said that the Brains were always good about removing offending parts from the movies. But it sure did sound like they could’ve just turned it right back in uncut. You got to love those crazy early days of cable tv where almost anything goes (or went, I should say).

Wow, I’m very jazzed up coming home from that performance. And I tell you, if ANY of the other Brains decided to do a one man show, I’ll be there in a heartbeat. Gypsy, I’m looking at you! Time to get your one-woman show back out there on the road!

#4 – Oh YOU were the guy who asked about Sidehackers! Okay, finally putting some (hazily remembered) faces to names. For the record, if the Brains HADN’T been well behaved editors, and HAD submitted an unedited Sidehackers as a master for broadcast, I’m pretty sure they would have earned the Comedy Channel’s great wrath. I THINK that’s what Joel was implying with his response.

I asked Joel about his appearance on Soultaker, and once we get round to that ep in the rotation I will write about what he said.

And I agree, watching Joel’s dad riff was great, really the highlight of the evening, because it shows you where this wonderful show really comes from at the deep heart’s core.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I like Joel.

Yeah, I think you’re right. It probably was the Brains responsibility to remove what needed to be from any R rated movie they did. That makes sense.

And it’s nice to know I wasn’t the only poster on this site who was there! Good to informally meet you, schippers!
