No services will be held because Nichols’ friends are either deceased or live far away and “an actor needs a full house,” his wife said.
Robert Nichols, RIP OCCCIDENTAL, CALIF. — Robert Nichols, a singer, dancer and actor who enjoyed a 70-year career on stage, television and in movies, died at his home here March 21. He was 88. MSTies will fondly remember his earnest performance as nerdy Joe Wilson in “This Island Earth,” which was featured in “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.”

An actor needs a full house.
It says so much, yet I’m speechless.

He delivered one of my favorite lines, and one that I surprising find a lot of uses for: “All that jerking around must have caused a flame out.” R.I.P. Nerdy Joe.

DAMN DAMN DAMN. You know, just the other day I discovered this guy was still alive. I toyed with the idea of writing him, just to say he was remembered fondly. But I don’t write letters to celebrities, and where would you send it, anyway, and then I had to go to work and stuff…
I got a big batch o’ Perry Mason DVDs earlier this year, and the other day I saw Nichols doing a very small part in a season 2 episode. “Dude!” I thought. “You were in The Thing and then in This Island Earth, and now you’re doing this tiny part? Is there no justice??” Well, no, there isn’t.
His part in The Thing wasn’t very extensive, but he really sold it. (This was also true of his tiny part on Perry.)
Goodbye, my friend. You were enjoyed.
