UPDATE: More Press for the New DVD Set…

…this time in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and featuring a couple of quotes from yours truly.

Then there’s The Washington Post

And the always reliable Wired (featuring a big ol’ Werewolf trailer embedded).

And there’s McClatchy Newspapers

Sampo – there is also a good write up in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/artsandliving/movies/features/bonus-points/102808.html

Found a little blurb in the generic “out on DVD this week” section of today’s Charlotte Observer…so Shout!Factory’s doing a good job on national press releases.

(Not worth linking to, as it just gave factual info about what’s in the set; no “grade.” It’s probably in your local paper, too.)

Oh, yeah…and I have to say, this appears to be the best-researched review I’ve seen yet! Of course, I’m biased, ’cause there are so many Trace quotes. But I hadn’t heard the drink & riff story before. And didn’t realize Sampo actually had a real live career at one point…

Encore, encore! Wish there were more overall positive write-ups like this; too many of the “online only” reviews like to focus on a few of the faults.

That being said, wish I had had web access in 94-95 – are there any places where the great Joel v Mike flame wars are archived?

I’ve been having a little trouble getting it out of the store. Three Best Buys with a total inventory of four copies. Nobody’s been able to actually produce one yet…

Oh good – I thought I was the only one having trouble unwedging the DVD’s from the tin, too…and they wedged Crow in the bottom too and tied him to the plastic. Took quite some effort to get everything out. But worth it!

  12. happy says:

My wife (MrsHappy) told me to just keep the DVDs out of the tin so I dont damage the box set that holds all the movies…everything else stays in the tin. It is really difficult
As for Best Buy I hate them. I went there to get the Hulk DVD for the lithographs that they advertised and they ran out within hours. All they did was do an oh well. They never have what I want because they run out quick or never carry the titles I seek.

It was like that scene in Zoolander when I tried to get the DVD’s out of the tin. Also? Big huge scratch on the front of the tin, under the shrinkwrap.

The bonuses are worth any inconvenience though, awesome set!

I’m just glad to hear that everyone else had the same troubles I had in regards to Best Buy and getting the box out of the tin. I thought it was just me. I bought my copy at FYE after Best Buy had none. Even FYE did not have a copy on the floor. I had to ask a salesgirl, who was very polite, and checked stock and went and got me one from the storeroom. I wanted to say something about how they won’t sell if you keep em in the storeroom, but I was just happy to get my copy,,,,even though I ended up paying $10 more.

Same here … I still haven’t gotten Crow loose.

I really liked the 3-part MST3K documentary — EXCEPT FOR THOSE DAMNED SPAGHETTI BUMPERS EVERY THREE MINUTES!!

Remember whenever there is an MST3K releated problem – It’s Jim Mallon’s fault!!

Seriously awesome set, didn’t have any trouble with the packaging, of course I don’t plan on removing Crow in the first place. What can I say? I still have my boxer shorts packaged in the “Shorts Box” that Rhino offered.
Shout Factory has done a phenomenal job, I hope there is a limited edition tin offered for all future releases as well.

TVShowsOnDVD.com has posted a review (which also makes note of the tin’s rather tight fit).

Im keeping crow and those other sheets in the tin. The tin needed to be at least 1/4 of an inch larger, not very much , but just enough to… take the !@!#!! movies out of the box ! LOL :)
My plan is to watch all 4 and everything in one fell swoop over the next week, since this is Halloween I want to watch have a horror marathon…I guess I can watch Werewolf, that counts as a horror in 2 different ways…
The tin and the color is very beautiful, I like the shade of blue and the popcorn box design at the bottom is really cool too…

There’s also an article in this week’s Entertainment Weekly. The picture of Joel and the Bots takes up most of the page.

Got my set yesterday at Borders where it was 20% off the list price of $69.99 so not a bad deal at all. The tin is really cool although mine has little bends in it where the security strap-on-device-thingy dug into the metal. Loved the documentaries and seeing the KTMA theme song for the very first time.

Loved “Lazerblast” which I’d never seen before. The line, “If you could hear what I smell” killed my buddy and I. All in all a great set.

woo hoo, it was all I could do not to rip it open right there in the post office. One tiny ding on the back lower edge of the box. And christ yeah, that is one snug fit inside. Took me 5 minutes to get the dvd’s out ( without damaging the package too much ).

And the Crow fig is sweet!

I will give Crow a place of honor… I think I will use the extra space in the box to store my “loosies”: Giant Gila Monster, the CineTit discs and that replacement disc Rhino sent out a while back correcting some production error….. And my CT autogragh collection as well.

    @ #11 and #16

Same here. 3 Best Buy locations, 2 copies each per store according to their inventory status. All 3 stores had to go back in the back and look for them. One location never found them. (lol – after over an hour) Another brought them out after 20 minutes, and they literally looked like they’d been punted across a football field. Finally – the 3rd location found them almost immediately after I asked where they were – bought the best of their two copies (which is dent free, but has a few small scratches under the shrinkwrap – ah well). A heck of a lot of strife to actually get this set, but worth it, since it’s limited. I just hope the next one is more stress-free upon release.

I just opened it, and it’s beautiful. I love the tin! If it had a handle, I’d be tempted to carry it as a lunch box. No dents and no scratches. It was difficult getting the DVDs out, but I just slid my hand under and “rocked” their box back and forth. Part of me wants to order another one and put it away unopened somewhere, but I don’t think I want to get all Comic Book Guy about it.
Love the art, too. Nice to MST3K packaged so beautifully. Crow figurine is super-cool!
It’ll be a treat to see these episodes in focus finally with non-sludgy audio.
    Shout Factory, you done good.

I loved the documentary and the convention coverage! The theme song collection was missing the season 1 version, but that’s a minor gripe.

I am so glad I bought that 5 disc DVD player… made watching the Doc and Panel almost seamless :D and of course they were great. I may be all fan-boy here but I could listen to those cats talk forever.

And oh my god our own Sampo and Erhardt !! You guys are a part of historical record now, and you’ve earned it !!!!

Dunno if anyone else noticed this, but a slight nit-pick on the http://www.philly.com article: It says the show had its last two seasons on the sci-fi channel. AND WE ALL KNOW THAT’S NOT TRUE.

    But, yeah, great quotes there!

I’ll add my experience to the list of “Misadventures in Purchasing the DVD at Best Buy”. I looked online in the morning and saw it was listed as in stock at the local Best Buy. I left the house, drove there, and walked into the store about five minutes after they opened. I walked back to the DVD section and found no DVD set anywhere I looked. I asked a worker to assist me in finding it, and though she was nice enough, she definitely wasn’t the brightest bulb on the tree. I had to try and explain to her what it even was (A DVD box set in a metal box) about three times, and repeat the name of the show about ten times while she walked around looking not only in all the places I had just looked, but every other illogical place that it would never be in a million years (and all while I was repeatedly saying that I already looked everywhere on the shelves). Finally after the third or fourth time I told her it was listed on the website as “in stock” she decided that maybe she should check the store computer, which also had it listed as in stock. So then, as she started walking back to once again check the same shelves where we had already confirmed definitely WASN’T, I suggested that maybe it hadn’t been put on the shelves yet, to which she agreed in a very “oh yeah, I hadn’t thought of that!” way. So she went in the back to check and about fifteen minutes later came out empty handed, and said nothing as she walked over to the DVD shelves. She picked up a couple copies of “Volume 10.2” that were sitting there and started turning them over and looking at them with a confused expression on her face. At this point I was quite bored with it all, and so I just said “well thank you anyway” and walked away. I drove to the Circuit City up the road in a vain hope that they might actually have it in their razor thin DVD selection, which of course they didn’t. So I just gave up, used my money to buy Fallout 3 there to get a free $10 Circuit City gift card with it, and went home. I ordered my copy from Amazon, and it’s now in the mail on it’s way to me.

Well… I work at Best Buy but am on vacation this week so instead of getting it at my store I went to a store closer to my home to pick up a copy. It wasn’t on the shelf there either. I had to press one of the guys to check the warehouse because I knew they had it. After about 15 minutes he came out with it… I suspect, from what the guy said, that the trouble with getting this release out in time has something to do with the way the box was labeled, but i digress… The set is awesome! Shout! really did put together a great set.

Scott #31: Possibly their confusion came from the fact that Seasons Nine and Ten were each about half the length of Eight.

  33. Holly says:

That’s techically correct, the last two seasons were on Sci-Fi. I know what you mean though.

I got my copy from amazon yesterday, they said it wouldn’t be here until November 1st, but I live 5 miles away from where it was mailed out. I guess not even USPS could stretch delivery time out that long. I took it all apart, I’m a terrible collecter! The movies are on my shelf, Crow is on the TV, and I needed a new box for sewing supplies, so that’s what the tin will be for.

@ psyche-out #33… I frequent Best Buy, and have had other times where the DVD I was looking for wasn’t on the shelves, but the people were very helpful and found it for me in the back, but this time just turned into a big hassle. The Best Buy website still has it listed as “in stock” for that store even today.

Just wanted to say that despite what happened, I finally got a copy at Best Buy. For some reason it was with all of the stuff street dated next Tuesday. It obviously isn’t that date and I was able to purchase it. Next time you swing by, maybe have them double check that area.

    All to save $5.

Crow stays in the box. He seems wedged in and anyway, it’ll get dusty out to the box. Crow does not appear to an ‘action’ figure.

Hope in the future a Servo, Gypsy, Dr F, Bobo, TV’s Frank, Brain Guy and a Pearl doll (with action hips) will be offered.

A joel/mike doll too, the heads can be exchangeable.

 Had a hard time getting the dvd’s out, too, but finally managed.Left the Crow figurine in the tin.No sense of tearing up the tin or the figurine..By the way, since Entertainment Weekly gave the box set an A-,why not email them and ask them to do an interview/article on Cinematic Titanic??? The more exposure, the better, right???? Plus, buy the MST3K box sets and the Cinematic Titanic videos for your library and your friends. The more money they make, the more bad movies they’ll riff on from now on,right??? Just a thought..
