Many online retailers have sold out their supplies of the 20th Anniversary limited edition set, but mst3k.com is still selling a “Limited Edition 20th Anniversary Gypsy Signature Boxed Set” that includes signatures from Jim Mallon and Gypsy on the back. The set is available for $65 exclusively at the MSTie Mall.

I disagree that it’s weak, I just don’t know how they plan to sell any when pre-orders started months ago on Amazon. Doesn’t really seem like a good business decision to me.

What the heck does all this TOSHIBA stuff mean? The extra insert is a little lame at this time. Maybe add it to SHOUTS! second release?

I hope more sets are released in a “limited addition. Going to love my crow figure but want a servo one too…

Autographed by Joel H. and the entire cast it might be worth the high price. Autographed only by the one member of the group who also happens to be the one most responsible for the the other most talented members leaving the show, not worth it. I paid a little more than $40 for this set at DeepDiscount. I don’t think Jim Mallon’s signature without the other cast/production members is worth an extra $25.

Maybe… if I would have heard about it a month ago.

I had the pleasure of looking through the box set today. A video store I frequent and rent MST3K often from has it and he let me look through it because he knows I’m a fan. Very nice tin box, a lot thicker then I imagined (it’s about 3-4 old Rhino volumes of MST3K thick, almost a lunch-box). The Crow figure was way better done then I thought it would be and the DVD-box size cards are neat if not a little generic in appearance. I have mine pre-ordered on Amazon and can’t wait, although I think it’s weird that the video store has it (but not renting it yet) and I shouldn’t be expecting mine until early November….. I think I’m kind of in a lucky position, because I’m a HUGE fan but I’ve never seen these episodes on TV or DVD or youtube or anything. I’ve seen a lot and I own like 9 volumes (I’m late collecting but I’ve been watching since I was in middle school….though I didn’t have cable for many years). I thibk everyone should be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the set. Sorry if I’m ranting, but I’m hyped and it killed me handling the set and looking at everything and not being able to watch and own it yet. AHHHHHH!

Anyone who has been buying the CT DVD’s or any of their other merchandise gets an autographed insert anyway…for FREE!!! I already have a Trace, Mary Jo and J Elvis. Mike has put his signature on some of the early commentary DVDs
he has done.
Entertainment Weekly has a nice little review of the 20th Anniversary set in it’s latest issue. Check it out! Nice nig pic of Joel and the Bots. They rated it A.

UGGGGH! That should have been “nice BIG pic”
Sorry about that!

It’s going to be fun playing Collect All Five with the signed CT inserts. I hope/assume we’ll be getting a Joel and a Frank over the next few releases.

I know it’s Cinematic Titanic Live here in Minnesota tonight, but I still can’t help but wish beyond wish that they might have some tins there to sell too. (I know, not bloody likely). But I do hope they have episode 4: Legacy Of Blood on DVD there, I figured since I’m going I might as well wait til now to get it since the ordering, shipping and receiving time would have been about today too.

Interesting choice for Jim to be signing next to the bone which has a phallic appearance.

These things are overpriced enough as it is. You can get plenty of other shows’ entire seasons for $30. Here we have 4 episodes for more than $40. And now this? No thanks.

I preordered the Amazon version, and honestly I don’t see Jim Mallon writing on it in permanent marker as an upgrade. MAYBE if it were Joel.

I’m happy with my much cheaper order from Amazon.com. I also used the Amazon.com link from this website in order to support it.

Is Jim gonna actually sign a recognizable signautre, or is he gonna do his cheezy JM that he put on my calendar at the ’96 convention?

i was considering getting it cause i havent pre ordered yet but its already sold out. oh well saves me the money.

I don’t know how to post a picture here, but DVD Empire has posted Front and Back artwork for the collection. There is no information that we don’t know already.

Actually, I would have been more than willing to plunk down the extra dough for Jim’s autograph. But I pre-ordered on Amazon a few months ago, and just got my shipping notification this morning. If he is thinking of doing this with the next release, I’m all for it.

Having seen that these are all sold out, I pre-ordered on Amazon. (Plus I’d feel a bit funny paying for an autograph of a guy my dad produced telethons with back in the 80’s).
tvshowsondvd.com scared me into snapping up a copy now, as Shout! claims all tins have shipped and from what it sounds will be sold out within the coming month.

And what about Paul Chaplin? He works at MST3K.com now. He couldn’t sign a card too?

Gee I’m lame enough pay for a Gypsy signature. Is this the one I pre-ordered ages ago on Amazon? Probably not, talk about having a choice. AND I would have spent the dough!
CT sent me a card with J.Elvis signature with the Legacy of Blood dvd. I assume it was real; thought it a nice touch.

Agreed!! I don’t see the big deal with autographs in the first place though. You have someone’s signature…so what…??

I hope they don’t start going crazy like I’ve seen other movies do over the years and just re-release the same title but different extras and call it a “new release” just because of the 20th aniversary aspect. Granted, the msties are a smaller market, but they do continue to support the show and buy the movies. I hope they don’t try to take advantage of that.

Is there any news about the “standard edition” release of the set? I’m sure the Crow figurine is real nice but personally I don’t have any use for an oversized box and dust collector. I just want the movies. I thought it was originally annouced for November the the month is now nearly over.

Pretty much agree with everyone else here. I think everyone who collects MST stuff knows you pre-order and pre-order soon if you want to actually get the items. So I had this set on order for Christmas 2 months before this announcement. Anyway, it would take a lot of specials for me to buy something this expensive, try all the bot figures.

The point a lot of you are missing is that it is clear that Jim does not get a drastically cut rate on these DVD sets. If he did, I am sure he would sell them cheaper. He, no doubt, needs to sell close to MSRP to turn a viable profit. Look at the other sets. They are either $5 or $10 off the MSRP; a much smaller markdown than bigger online retailers who can afford to sell for less.
With the 20th Anniversary set, it is again marked only $5 off MSRP, but this time he’s given a bit of added value in the form of an autograph.
What’s wrong with that? He needs to give people *some* reason to buy from him if he hopes to sell any of these sets and a nice autograph is something he can easily do that adds value without raising his costs.
I think sometimes people’s irrational dislike for Mallon makes their heads go goofy…

BigZilla #32…
Does pre-ordering very early include ordering it almost a month after it was released? Because Amazon still has them in stock right now, as does my local Best Buy (though their copy was a bit roughed up looking when I was there the other day). And I bought mine in a store the day it came out with no trouble, and without pre-ordering. Pre-ordering has been very overrated in recent years, and was just turned into a way for stores to get people to panic and put money down on things they actually might not want when it comes down to it. I was in Best Buy the other day and they wanted me to put money down now to pre-order The Dark Knight on DVD. Like it will somehow sell out, and there won’t be fifty billion copies floating around in any store imaginable. And try getting your pre-order money back from Gamestop. Oh you get “store credit” and they keep your money whether you ever buy anything or not. Yes there are occasionally times when items are actually limited to a small amount and pre-ordering is probably the only way to go, but this set wasn’t really one of them. Yes, once the supply of the tin box version of this set runs out they are gone for good, but the supply was larger than people seem to think, and there are more than enough for anyone who wanted it right away to get it. Like I said it’s almost a month now, and they are still readily available on Amazon.com, and some other places as well. There is a difference between something truly limited (where there are actually far fewer copies than people who want one and you won’t be able to get unless you pre-ordered early), and something that you won’t be able to find anywhere only if you dick around for a few months after it’s release before even trying to get it.

Cronkite Moonshot #37. I can see your point when talking about “The Dark Knight”, the will be a gazillion copies available, and 6 months from now you’ll be able to pick it up for $5. On the otherhand, what BigZilla is talking about is correct. Good luck finding MST3K volume 9 or 10. I’m glad I pre-ordered both and have the original sets, becuase unless you are willing to fork over major cash, you won’t see those sets anywhere but Ebay. And until recently, the same thing applied for MST3K The Movie.

@Cronkite Moonshot:
I think his point is that with two sets out of print, one of them pretty quickly after release, MST3K fans are more likely to pull that trigger early. But, of course, many don’t and will never see Volume 9 or the original Volume 10.
Retailers push pre-orders not only because they get that sale early, but also because it guages interest among the much larger population that does *not* pre-order. Amazon is also able to give a larger discount for a pre-order, since it’s one copy that won’t sit on the shelves. (Though it was only $1 cheaper for MST3K20TH.)
I disagree with your assessment that something is only “truly limited” if there are “far fewer” copies than people would want. Limited to me just means they are only making so many and no more. How limited is another matter. If a company releases 3 Million copies of a “Limited Edition”, it’s still limited if they have no intention of making more, regardless of how it sells. An unlimited edition is one that will go back to press if there is a demand for more. True, said company could over-estimate or under-estimate demand, but that is irrelevant to an item’s status as a “limited edition”.
These sets clearly are limited, as they *will* be gone eventually and pretty soon. Amazon has them because they probably ordered a bazillion of them, but they won’t last forever. Then you will be stuck paying much closer to MSRP with the few retailers that still have it or hitting the secondary market where the price will only go up.

I agree with Philip Frey that people get a bit goofy in their dislike for Jim Mallon. I believe that I have absorbed as much info their is on MST and I think that any one who had his particular job could easily come off as a bit of a jerk. He handled the budget, the networks, the studios, and now the DVD distributors, I know that would suck the fun out of me. I imagine he had to be the “adult” of the team at times when he would rather have been one of the “kids.”
The end result of all this seems to be to blame Mallon any time any thing isn’t just right. I’d venture to say without him we’d be getting nothing in the way of commercial DVD’s. Also as he wasn’t the face of MST as Joel and Mike were, just like the lead singers of a band, we’re more likely to side with the face of the show over the producer. But it doesn’t take much MST history to pick up the fact that Mallon played an integral role in bringing our favorite show to life.
And yes, when it comes down to it I have my favorites amongst the cast, crew, and characters, but I’d pay to have lunch with my least favorite one if given the opportunity.

Cronkite Moonshot #37 – Trust me, I am not an advocate of pre-ordering just every random thing. Graboidz #38 made my point exactly. I rarely if ever ordered anything online, and certainly not pre-ordered. I just happened to pre-order MST3k Volume 10 when I had a little extra money. I’m glad I did as the Godzilla vs Megalon recall pretty much guaranteed you couldn’t get it. Volume 9 has also disappeared. Plus at the start of the year there were a lot of anxious folks hoping there would be enough single Giant Gila Monster discs to go around. I’m glad the 20th Anniversary edition is still around and hopefully it will remain so. Hopefully all subsequent Shout Factory MST3K releases will remain on the market for years so those who come late to the party can collect as many sets as possible.
In the meantime, I’ll buy Batman when it gets released at Wal-Mart. I plan to have all MST releases and will pre-order for the “just in case” factor.

I take what you mean about people pre-ordering MST3000 releases because of the history with those releases becoming rare, and just wanting to not take chances, but even with Volume 9 and 10 those who didn’t pre-order it could still get it for some time after the initial release. You didn’t HAVE to pre-order those to get them, just as you didn’t HAVE to pre-order this one, and usually don’t HAVE to pre-order anything to get it. Volume 9 was available for a long time, and I actually bought it quite a while after it was released (I actually got it about three weeks before it went OOP). I didn’t buy Volume 10 early enough, and learned my lesson, and that is what made me go out and buy up all the sets I didn’t yet have, including 9.
Yes technically something limited to only 3 million copies is a “limited edition”, but that doesn’t have anything to do with what we are talking about, and doesn’t mean anyone should rush out and pre-order it only for the purpose of guaranteeing that they can get one. BigZilla and Phillip Frey both give very good and legitimate reasons for pre-ordering, but none of them involve a situation of urgency, rarity, or being the only way to get something. The simple truth is that there are enough copies of this 20th Ann. set out there that anyone who wants it even a month after it’s release should have little problem getting it. And since they will also be releasing the DVD only version sooner than expected the second hand price of this set will probably not approach that of Vol. 9 or 10. The extra money would only be for the tin box and crow figure, not the DVDs, so less people would be willing to pay an exorbitant for it. I just think that the whole “rarity” of this set is being a tad overblown, and people who for one reason or another haven’t been able to pick it up yet shouldn’t be overly worried about it. At the very least they will still be able to get the DVDs themselves.

Also I highly agree about the overboard hating on Jim Mallon. Anyone who saw the Comicon panel on the DVD would see that there doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings between any of the CT Rifftrax or MST3K.com crews. Jim is probably not making much off the 20th DVD sets, and signing them is just a way of giving a little more to anyone who orders from his store. And missteps like the flash cartoons aside, he is doing a lot of work to keep MST alive and especially to get new DVDs released. Remember that we wouldn’t even have gotten this nice new DVD set without his hard work to keep MST3000 going strong. How many other 10 year old cult TV shows have a person who is still working full time to make sure that they get the good treatment they deserve? I think he deserves any money he can make in the process. He doesn’t have to be giving MST such loving attention. After all there are probably better and more stable ways he could be making a living.

My big question: Does the final chapter of Werewolf play? I watched it today on TWO different DVD players and it just wouldn’t run. The disc is clean…no scratches or anything. Chapter 11, I believe…which is where Shout Factory will end up, if this turns out to be a faulty product.
Geez. I shouldn’t have said that. Sorry. But it really is Chapter 11 that won’t play.
BTW, I LOVE the packaging. Although mine is NOT an autographed copy, I still think it’s great. Also, great to have First Ship To Venus on DVD finally. The Klack HS is TOO funny. I also love the Crow figurine, but would rather have a Servo, if there is one.

I’ve noticed that people have added comments about a month after news of this set first broke out. With all this talk about whether or not to pre-order, I find it interesting that now you’re seeing prices for this “limited edition” set on Amazon.com going for triple digits. (Sound familiar to anyone like me who’s missing Volumes 9 or 10?) One of those places was Newbury Comics, a chain in the northeast that sells all sorts of unusual items. While they were offering MST3K 20AE at a brutally high price online, I was able to get the tin edition at my local Newbury Comics for $50. After missing out on the other volumes, there was no way I was letting go of this!
At least they released this in a “dvd only” format as well. If nothing else, these four episodes will be accessible to MSTies who couldn’t get the SE release in late October.

Ok. Now we’ve got a problem.
Just watched First Spaceship on Venus and the end was cut off…again…on CHAPTER 11!
Of course, I tried a completely different DVD as a test, went to Chapter 11 and it worked fine, so it’s not my DVD player.
This is TWO DVD’s, from the SAME Box set, that won’t play after Chapter 10.
I’m going back to the store. I saved the receipt (I think) and hopefully, they’ll give me a new set.
This is a MAJOR blunder. Am I the only only one who’s experienced this? Please reply.
Peace in Jesus,

@Wisecracker:
I had no problem and I watched all four of the DVDs without incident.
If you can’t get a replacement at the store, contact Shout!, they may be able to replace just the discs.
Did the other two work?

RTR & all interested,
I went back to the store tonight and got a replacement set of DVDs and I’m VERY HAPPY to say, that all four of them play just fine. WHEW!
I apologize if my comments were a bit toxic, but, quite frankly, I was pissed! :) What a shock…an over-reactive MYSTIE! LOL!
Very pleased with the boxset, even though it’s not autographed. Love the tin, love the Crow figurine, love the episodes and love the extras, especially the ’08 Comic-Con segment and the 3-part making of…
Thanks for all the hard work that goes into making this stuff.
