Weekend Discussion Thread: A True Turkey Day Marathon for the Sci-Fi Channel Era

Alert reader “bad wolf” offered a great suggestion in the comments this week:

Here’s an idea for a Weekend Discussion–since they didn’t have T-day marathons in the Sci-Fi channel years, what would an ideal Season 8/9/10 marathon include?

Let’s do a 24-hour marathon–12 episodes. Which eps? In what order.

And any thoughts on what would happen in the bumpers?

Bumpers would be Pearl, Bobo, Ortega, and Brain Guy having a dysfunctional Thanksgiving in Castle Forrester, with maybe the Space Children sitting at a folding card table (kiddie table!!).
    Episodes:
    Giant Spider Invasion
    Prince Of Space
    Quest Of The Delta Knights
    Space Children (of course!)
    Final Sacrifice
    Invasion Of The Neptune Men
    Touch Of Satan
    Blood Waters Of Dr. Z
    Final Justice
    Soultaker
    Hamlet (I went there!!)
    Space Mutiny

Riding With Death (lots of turkeys)
Prince of Space (Krankor’s ship looked like a roast turkey)

    Ok, that’s all I’ve got…

As for the bumpers, Pearl would have planned to take over the world when everyone was in a too-much-turkey-eating-induced stupor, only to be foiled when Brain Guy and Bobo suffer the same fate.

Actually Sci-Fi had a sort-of Turkey day marathon during season 9. There were eight episodes.

    My choices for Turkey Day:

    Revenge of the Creature
    The Deadly Mantis
    Parts: The Clonous Horror
    Prince of Space
    Overdrawn At the Memory Bank
    The Puma Man
    Werewolf
    Soultaker
    Future War
    Bloodwaters of Dr Z
    Final Justice
    Diabolik

  4. Torgo's Pajamas says:

Thinking about the bumpers, one idea would be to use the breaks to riff on or otherwise mock the stable terrible Sci-Fi (a.k.a., Syfy) original movies. Another helping of “Dinocroc,” anyone? Maybe some “Mansquito?” I think some bad green screen effects would be in order.

It goes without saying on mine that both Bobo and Observer would be relegated to the kiddie table at some point, leaving Pearl and Ortega at opposite ends of a massive long table. Oh, and the babysitter (Candy? Cindy?) from Touch Of Satan should be there to add to their torment.

  6. Dark Grandma of Death says:

I’d choose episodes that had partying, entertainment, dancing, or lots of food; the first episode would be Track of the Moonbeast (with a handy recipe for stew, with corn, peppers, *sigh* onions…).

    After that, we could watch:

Girl in Gold Boots (dancing girls)
Incredibly Strange Creatures (more dance numbers, plus songs)
I Was a Teenage Werewolf (for that party with all the great food)
The Touch of Satan (meals in between murders)
Horror of Party Beach (let’s dance!)
Devil Doll (no-ham taunting is always fun)
Giant Spider Invasion (sun-baked chicken, yum)
Space Mutiny (let’s dance some more!)
Deadly Bees (more songs to enjoy while our food settles)
Riding wih Death (Jim Stafford singing, to encourage guests to leave)
The Undead (all the dead dancing girls to send us off to bed with weird dreams)

As for bumpers, Brain Guy preparing the meal, with Bobo’s help, while Pearl watches football. Steffi and Brian could stop by, along with Krankor, Ortega, and Adrienne Barbeau., (or the shapeshifting witch from The Undead).

  7. Professor Gunther says:

    Episodes:

    1) Ring of Terror
    2) Godzilla Versus the Sea Monster
    3) Cave Dwellers
    4) Master Ninja 1
    5) Master Ninja 2
    6) Fire Maidens of Outer Space
    7) The Brain that Wouldn’t Die
    8) Girls Town
    9) Zombie Nightmare
    10)Night of the Blood Beast
    11)Horror of Party Beach
    12)Mitchell

Nothing rings in the Holiday Season like Mitchell (the smell of stale cigarettes and empty Schlitz cans–I’m getting all nostalgic for depressing Christmas parties in small-town Alberta); it remains one of our favourite Christmas episodes.

Bumpers: Thanksgiving with the Observers. I’m still working this out, so I might return.

  13. bad wolf says:

Thanks Sampo! Longtime reader, first time suggester. My suggestions are mainly based on only seeing the Sci-Fi years on DVD, and trying to balance out the seasons:
812 – THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES (dancing, singing)
820 – SPACE MUTINY (the final Season 8 trilogy is just classic)
    821 – TIME CHASERS
822 – OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK
    904 – WEREWOLF
    907 – HOBGOBLINS
908 – THE TOUCH OF SATAN
    910 – THE FINAL SACRIFICE
1002 – GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS (more dancing, singing)
1003 – MERLIN’S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS (disturbing old man telling stories to kids)
1006 – BOGGY CREEK II: AND THE LEGEND CONTINUES… (Crenshaw)
1008 – FINAL JUSTICE (Joe Don Baker)

For bumpers, many people spend half the holiday on the road, so i suggest Pearl, Bobo and Observer riding in the space-van from Season 8 going to a Thanksgiving dinner. Along the way they check in with and pick up characters such as: Space children, Livinia and some Romans, Monkeys, Observers, Nanites, Ortega, Steffi the babysitter, the mad scientist inspector (Girl in gold boots), and the country boy (boggy creek 2). It becomes an overcrowded telephone-booth like gag after a while. Mike & the bots could be joined by dark Crow Timmy and the many, many Servos for a dinner of their own. And… Nuveena?

My version would be similar to Turkey day ’91. Pearl tries to take over the world while Bobo and Brain Guy set up Thanksgiving. Characters from various films during the Sci-fi era come to visit. Each episode would be from a different season, but 2 from season 5 with one Joel one Mike. (KTMA isn’t included since the movies were obviously licensed illegally).

    1. Moon Zero Two

    2. Wild Rebels

    3. Gamera vs. Zigra

    4. Monster A-Go-Go

    5. Eegah!

    6. Teenage Crime Wave

    7. The Violent Years

  17. ck says:

Well, it is a Thanksgiving feast, so:

    1) Start off with Overdrawn at the Memory Bank for some of mom’s good chicken soup
1a) For non-soup lovers Track of the Moonbeast’s southwestern stew
    2) Main meat dish take-outs from Dutch’s select beef from The Giant Spider Invasion of Savings
    3) vegetables to accompany 2) purchased at the supermarket in Time Chasers
(try to avoid the matchmaking lady— oh, and pick up some of the maple syrup. Hell, they’re
    giving it away).
    4) Then (after coming back from having your stomach pumped out from consuming Dutch’s select beef)cleanse the palate with cheese from Mike and Servo’s Co-op (Just ask a dude on break for samples)
    5) A selction of luncheon meats (ham, bologna, etc.) from Devil doll
    6) Enjoy some honey on bread from The Deadly Bees while downing some room temperature British ale.
    7) Call the kids in (it’s getting dark) from their picnic by the pond in Touch of Satan after they
enjoy their sandwiches and spearing the fish in the pond (they’re also Space Children)
    8) Time for some bird. Enjoy the well cooked chicken in Merlin’s Hop while relaxing with a few
brews purchased at the Renaissance fair (or whatever) in Soultaker.
    9) Food running low. Just visit the kitchen in Future War and borrow some from the large guys.
    10) Lots of canned goods available on Spider Island. One option for desert is Babs and Co.
    11) Alternate desert, try getting Horatio to get you some Danish, Hamlet’s more depressed then
Marvin the paranoid androis so don’t even go there. It will be hours before he finishes explaining his doubts about Uncle Claud-ass.

The whole banquet catered by Ortega, in Roman Times. Entertainment by Crow and Brain Guy’s
competing dances. And can they pony! Oh, Steffi sees that Mike and the bots behave while Bobo
wrestles a Solarite (it was a good and beautiful thing to do), to the accompaniment of Michael
Feinstein’s broadway piano songs and reminiscenses. A good time was had by all (except the dummy, who got ill when his bologna samndwiches repeated in his sawdust stomach).

  18. John M Hanna says:

The bumpers would be linked to the movies shown. They would also involve the many plans of Pearl going awry.

1: ‘Gorgo’ Pearl creates a gigantic, Godzilla sized turkey to crush cities with. Its killed when a sudden rain shower makes it look up and drown.

2: ‘TISCWSLABMUZ’ She resurrects zombie pilgrims. They end up too morally upright for Pearl’s liking.

3: ‘Werewolf’ She turns Mike into a were-turkey. Tom and Crow are delighted to no end.

4: ‘Devil Doll’ Pearl tells everyone they can’t have ham. So everyone has turkey instead.

5: ‘Horror Of Party Beach’ Pearl loads up Thanksgiving meals with lots of sodium. FDA stops her.

6: ‘It Lives By Night’ Pearl creates vampire turkeys. They only like drinking gravy.

7: ‘Agent For H.A.R.M.’ Pearl plans to release spore all over everyones meal. it only serves as a flavor enhancer.

8: ‘The Puma Man’ Pearl infuses Brainguy with the natural powers of a turkey. He flies like a moron.

9: ‘Prince Of Space’ Pearl allies with Phantom Of Krankor to take over Thanksgiving. He gets scared off by ambrosia salad. His weapons are useless against it.

10: ‘Overdrawn At The Memory Bank’ Pearl dopples Bobo’s fingle into sage stuffing. He asks her “My nuts?”

11: ‘Hobgoblins’ Pearl forces everyone into a very 80s Thanksgiving, complete with huge hair and synth-music.

12: ‘The Giant Spider Invasion’ The marathon ends with Pearl, Bobo and Brainguy having a backwoods Thanksgiving. Lots of booze.

(Why are the Weekend questions always about the Sci-Fi Era, and/or fan money-lines thereof?)

@10 – All I know is you have to fit Jack Perkins in somehow, if only for a moment before Observer zaps him out beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Is anybody here old enough to even remember Jack Perkins?
He only ended up as a running joke because it was 1990, they were picking on everything else the other cable channels were doing, and Mike was annoyed by the way he chuckled warmly on the A&E interstitials–That, and Biography, until Jack was replaced by Peter Graves a couple years later, and well, you know where the riffs went with that.
(I mean, when the riffs all sink into generational ritual, they just sort of lose something.)

  20. Bob (NotThatBob) says:

Ah, yes – your Turkey Day experiment. Sent from the Institute For Mad Science directly to your dinner table. The experiment? – how much tryptophan would it take to induce a zombie like trance state through which one could enslave mankind – with the assistance, of course, of 24 hours worth of trance enducing Movie-Sominex. Pearl would have a selection of people from the village and as she broadcasts the movies (using Brain-Guy’s omnipotence to hijack every TV station across the nation) she’d present them with a different turkey left-over based concoction she can think of – all the while monitoring them for just the right combination of tryptophan and movie. Bobo, of course, instantly becomes a zombie slave with the very first dish. She’d have Brain-Guy whip her up a kitchen set – it’d all be presented very “Julia Child”-ish.
The marathon would start off innocently enough, but then the movies would be progressively slower and more difficult to watch. They’d be…
    1. Revenge of the Creature
    2. The Undead
    3. The Screaming Skull
    4. Parts: The Clonus Horror
    5. The Incredibly Strange Creatures…
    6. Riding With Death
    7. Girl in Gold Boots
    8. The Final Sacrifice
    9. Invasion of the Neptune Men
    10. Blood Waters of Dr. Z
    11. It Lives By Night
    12. Puma Man
Though ideally #12 would be a premier episode – something new. If that were the case I’d take out “It Lives By Night” and have the final movie be “From Hell It Came.” Up on the Satelite of Love, the Nanites would attempt to synthesize Thanksgiving for Mike and the bots, all the while having Mike and the bots attempt to explain to them the meaning behind the holiday. At the end of the experiment, none of the villagers would be zombies, though they’d all be very ill and Pearl would have to have zombie Bobo take the van and anonymously drop them at the village emergency room.

Three years of MST on the Sci-fi channel means there are three years worth of Turkey Day Marathons to think about and (fake) plan.

Mine all have 14 eps each, just ’cause. Here we go:

(all Season 9 eps would air by the end of Sept., so this marathon will NOT lead to a premiere)

  22. Flying Saucers Over Oz says:

Bumper storyline: Pearl’s preparing to use her death ray, just out of the box from Fingerhut, to take over the world, but gets sidetracked when a bunch of visitors stop in for the traditional but this is the first Pearl’s heard of it Castle Forrester Thanksgiving feast. Unable to get rid of them, she’s resigned to cooking them dinner, with Bobo and Brain Guy’s help. As the last of the guests depart, Pearl discovers Bobo’s spilled gravy all over the death ray and short-circuited it.

Meanwhile on the SOL, Gypsy’s prepared an elaborate Martha Stewart-like dinner party and becomes increasingly annoyed when the boys have to keep interrupting it to rush in and watch the movies. At the end, the food’s cold, spoiled, coagulated, and re-heated into inedibility, but Gypsy worked hard to make it and she insists Crow, Mike, and Tom EAT EVERY DAMN BITE OF IT! NOW!

Smirkboy #3: Actually that was in 1997 during season eight, but yes I’m surprised I haven’t seen more people mention it online. I assume people find it forgettable because there weren’t any Turkey Day bumpers. Oddly enough they switched to a Star Wars double feature with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi during prime time before briefly resuming the marathon with two more MST3K episodes afterward.

I don’t know if I’d want any specific episodes to air during my hypothetical SCI-FI Turkey Day marathon, but I know I’d include a few episodes from Seasons 1-7. I think SCI-FI made a mistake to ignore the previous 128 episodes (plus the movie) and only show the 48 that were specifically produced for their network. It definitely would have helped during that period between October 1999 and January 2004 when they were just showing SCI-FI era reruns.

Any of season 8, 9, or 10 would be good.

But, for the Bumpers, I would love to see an extended version of Totally Public Pearl. Some of the funniest stuff they did.

Either that or extended version of Mike, destroyer of worlds, and his ensuing trial for blowing up three planets. Also, extremely funny.

Last but not least, how about the “gods” sitting down in Roman Times trying to explain how the “gods” have thanksgiving. The guests would be E-Pearlo, Brainguyus, Mad Goth, Puma Man Slab Bulkhead, Fridge Largemeat, Punt stinkcheese, Fist Rockbone, Rip Steakface . . . . and Rowsdowser!

(Only Rowsdowser crashed the party. No one invites Rowsdowser because when he shows up, guaranteed there are NO leftovers!)

And OF COURSE, served with the turkey would be a stew made with chicken, corn, green peppers, chili, onions . . . .

The first thing that occurred to me when I read this topic was that the Sci-Fi Channel did have a Turkey Day marathon one season and I see someone else here mentioned that as well.

Anyway, Space Mutiny, Werewolf, Merlin’s Shop, Revenge Of The Creature, Soultaker, Jack Frost, Terror From The Year 5000, Time Chasers, Diabolik, Quest Of The Delta Knights, Deadly Mantis and The Mole People are some of the better episodes from the era and cover a wide range of SF/Fantasy sub-genres for a marathon.

  29. I am sad that I never got to experience the Majesty of a Turkey Day–I didn’t come in until the Sci-Fi years . . . I did, however, wear my sweater with my GIZMONICS patch on the sleeve to my family dinner on Thursday.

My perfect Turkey Day would begin thusly.

In Castle Forrester, guests are arriving as if sent by an unseen force. Tanta Bobo reads “Dr. Blood’s Orgy of Gore” to The Space Children. Ortega has become an honorary member Pearl has nothing to feed them but cocktail onions and Rose’s Lime Juice, but luckily, Brain Guys conjures up some Chikin in a Biscuit crackers to snack on.

Let’s kick it off with my all-time favorite episode, HOBGOBLINS
    SQUIRM
    OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK
GIRL WITH GOLD BOOTS (featuring a dance-off between Brain Guy and Crow)
    JACK FROST
THE SCREAMING SKULL (only because I like “Robot Rumpus” so much)
    RIDING WITH DEATH
    THE UNEARTHLY
    MERLIN’S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS
    QUEST FOR THE DELTA KNIGHTS
    FINAL JUSTICE

On the SOL, Mike is trying to prepare a meal, but is failing miserably to appease all his guests, who include his wife Krankor and his cousin Eddie. Crow plays with his chicken puppet. Servo comfort rates the guests. Mike pleads with the Nanites to help and while yes, they do make a Thanksgiving feast, it’s microscopic.

At Castle Forrester, there are two seats empty . . . who could it be for? . . . there’s a knock at the door . . . and it’s TV’s Frank AND Dr. Clayton Forrester!

Meanwhile, who should appear in the Hexfield but JOEL to finish out the last episode,

1013 – Diabolik (Good night MST3K and may the flight of angels sing thee to thy rest)

@#31- I have made it through both. Devil Doll is a classic MST to me. Dreary, drab, great riffing, and, for the SCI-FI years, decent host segments.
Hamlet, well, I like it- but, I am in love with anyone who plays Ophelia. I called my girl friend Ophelia long before the MST treatment of Hamlet. And, every show I like (Star Trek TOS; The Simpsons, Hell- even Gilligin’s Island, did a tribute to Hamlet.
Yes, I have watched the entire episode of Hamlet too.

Narrowing down my favorite SciFi-era episodes isn’t that hard – I think this would make a fine Turkey Day indeed…

    810 The Giant Spider Invasion
    811 Parts: The Clonus Horror
    813 Jack Frost
    815 Agent for H.A.R.M.
    820 Space Mutiny
    902 The Phantom Planet
    904 Werewolf
    906 The Space Children
    909 Gorgo
    910 The Final Sacrifice
    1004 Future War
1005 The Blood Waters of Dr. Z
1006 Boggy Creek II: And The Legend Continues
1007 Track of the Moon Beast
1011 The Horrors of Spider Island

And because I’m the creative type, I’m gonna go one step further and create my own ideal Turkey Day lineup for 1996, the final year MST3K was on Comedy Central. Realistically, this would never work because CC had lost the rights to most of these episodes by the end of the year, but hey, I can dream.

    420 The Human Duplicators
    504 Secret Agent Super Dragon
    508 Operation Double 007
    510 The Painted Hills
    516 Alien from L.A.
    521 Santa Claus
    524 12 to the Moon
    605 Colossus and the Headhunters
    608 Code Name: Diamond Head
    610 The Violent Years
    614 San Francisco International
    620 Danger!! Death Ray
621 The Beast of Yucca Flats
703 Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell
    704 The Incredible Melting Man

I actually watched this particular lineup this year over the course of several days as my own personal Turkey Day. Ah, fun! :D

@31 – The lists are heavy on the Mike shows because the discussion is on possible Sci-Fi channel Turkey Day marathons, and as Mike was the only host on the Sci-Fi channel and the fact that Sci-Fi had no rights to any of the Comedy Central era episodes of the show, these fantasy lists are (or should be) exclusively from Seasons 8-10.

As for Devil Doll, yeah…I like it. It’s fun. As for Hamlet…I’m not a hater, as some seem to be,….but I don’t love it…it’s merely “okay.”

I also like Hamlet, and that ep has one of my favorite riffs of the sci-fi era. During one of Hamlet’s monologues, Crow (I think) after a brief sigh laments “Is there a word in the english language he HASN’T said?”
As far as host segments, KylesRedShorts put together a fine group of host segment ideas, though Dr. Forrester’s presence might be difficult to explain. Even by MST3K standards!
I’d also watch any twelve eps. I don’t care which ones.Somehow, this puppet show is better than most of the drivel shoveled to the viewing public.

    Tough one but here goes.
    1) Giant Spider Invasion
    2) Soultaker
    3) Squirm
    4) The Mole People
    5) Werewolf (or Warwulf, if you prefer)
    6) Merlins Shop of Mystical Wonders
    7) Prince of Space
    8) Riding With Death
    9) Boggy Creek II- Electric Boogaloo (I can’t have Thanksgiving without Crenshaw!!),
    10) The Deadly Bees
    11) The Touch of Satan
    12) Space Mutiny.

Man, I didn’t realize how many good eps. there were in the Sci-Fi era. I left out Puma Man, The Projected Man, etc. I am so glad Sci-Fi picked up the show for those three seasons. Imagine all the classic episodes we would have missed.

#32 And #34 from #31. On Devil Doll and Hamlet let me say I’m sorry for jumping the gun on those two movies. First of all I get mad when anyone dislikes any movie or even music that I like. Or to put it another way whenever someone dislikes something and makes it sound like because they don’t like it no one should like it. So I’m sorry for putting down something other people like, and I know we all have MST shows that mean something to each of us for our own personal reasons. I also want to point out that I thought it was if we could do our own Turkey Day Marathon {with all 10 seasons of shows} what 12 shows would we choose. But going back to the top of the page and actually reading it I see it was IN BOLD BLACK PRINT
A True Turkey Day Marathon for the Sci-Fi Channel Era. But I do see others kind of did a mixed bag using all 10 seasons so I wasn’t the only bonehead to go off on my own. It’s weird but Wed. night I was thinking about planing a T.D.M. for next year based on how many more movies we’d have on DVD from SHOUT and that I plan to get a bigger flat screen for our tiny apartment. There’s nothing worse than having 8 to 10 friends over to watch a MST3K Marathon on my tiny 12 inch Black and White TV with the picture that flips like a strobe light. It tends to give people headaches.
Only kidding I don’t have a 12 inch B/W TV it’s a 19 inch set with a flipping picture. No I do have a two year old 32 inch flat screen, but for MST MOVIES IT’S GOT TO BE BIGGER. Sorry for the long post my wife’s out and I’m lonely and I tend to be wordy. I’m gonna go watch my 12 er 19 umm 32 inch B/W, I mean COLOR TV NOW.

Captn Ross Hagen- like me, you’re the keeper of the flame. Last night, after catching up on Dexter and Homeland, I watched MASH (the film), yet, I wasn’t satisfied. I popped in Hercules Unchained, followed by The Rebel Set and the, Phantom Planet. Girlfriend giggled like a schoolgirl, I smiled ear to ear.

So you go get that large TV, and, keep the posts coming here.

The day after Thanksgiving this year, I was immediately sick with the flu. So how could I NOT include an illness theme on this post, ha ha, misery loves company.

For the bumpers between the episodes (no specific preferences, I think they’re all wonderful) Frank turns up–he’s on break from Soultaking. Pearl’s delighted! They prepare a poisoned turkey recipe to inflict on the world in order to take it over. They test this recipe by serving it to an unsuspecting Brain Buy and Bobo. Brain Guy and Bobo moan and puke out the windows of the castle and Pearl and Frank high five each other. Then a guy with an umbrella strolls in while that silly music plays, he touches his hat to them in salute before strolling away. Frank and Pearl exchange puzzled looks. The end.
