An Interview with Joel and Trace

Steve Fritz at Newsarama.com interviews Joel and Trace and gets most of his facts straight, except when he says that the 20th Anniversary set comes with a Servo figure (it comes with a Crow figure).

Good interview. Well worth reading. I always like hearing background material on the history of MST.

And Joel was a real gentleman in refering to the CT Crew and the Rifftrax Crew collectively as “We”. Very nice, very classy.

    Quibbles:

Trace, are you sure you’re getting stipend checks and not residuals ?

South Park debuted in 1997, 15 months after Laserblast ushered out MST’s Comedy Central era. So it really couldn’t really have been the ‘new hit’ that helped drive MST from CC.

About halfway down, there’s a “that” that should be a “than”.

And the Crow / Servo misidentification thing that the Sampmeister already mentioned.

OH S*** and F*** ME. I misidentified Erhardt as Sampo. Oh the shame. Oh the ignomy. There is nothing worse that picking apart someone else and making your OWN screw-ups in the process. sigh. when will i ever learn.

    Sorry hardt-breaker.

  4. Well, if we’re getting “real” picky, Gamera is spelled incorrectly (“Gamora”).

Actually, that’s less picky than a “that” versus a “than”, particularly to the big guy himself .

I don’t know about the “South Park” thing — it’s clearly wrong, SP debuted quite a while after MST3K was off the channel, so it might just be one of those “old guy” things (we old guys tend towards revisionist history, mostly because we get facts mixed up, not due to malice of any kind :>)

hee hee, close… but Gomorrah was a place were you could get Gonorrhea, just as Sodom was a place where you could get… well you know.

In the article, Joel sez: We probably have about half the rights to all the movies that we did. Next year, we should be doing a lot of the old shows on iTunes, so then they’ll be readily available.

Did we know this? Is it confirmed, or just optimism?

  8. Wow, I’m That Guy from Dragoncon who does Cineprov! (yeah they spelled that wrong in the article too)

Thank you Joel for knowing we exist and mentioning us!

Anyone in Atlanta please come on out and see us. Half price if you mention Satellite News!

“Did we know this? Is it confirmed, or just optimism?”

In the initial Shout Factory press releases after acquiring the show they mentioned electronic distribution. So I’d say we knew, but specifics.

Cripes, I just wanna grab a red pen and proofread the hell out of that article.

“Ghoulardi was a legend when I was growing up,” Hodgson, who created MST3K recalls.

What are MST3K recalls? OH! Maybe you mean “Hodgson, who created MST3K, recalls”, or maybe “recalls Hodgson, who created MST3K”, or maybe even “recalls the show’s creator, Joel Hodgson”? See me after class.

(Okay, that was really nitpicky, but I don’t care, dammit, it was an awkward sentence!)

Robyn: ‘MST3K recalls’ is an out-dated term, we now refer to them as ‘callbacks’.

OK, I just made that up. I must be comma-tose.

Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are going the way of the Dodo in this culture, I think.

“MST3K recalls” is when an expired movie gets yanked from airing/distribution

Robyn, Medium, Crowschmo (and others): Oh, the places my red pen will go! I love reading a positive review as much as anyone, but the more spelling, grammar and factual errors I collected on my way through, the less I care about this guy’s opinion.

As Snoopy would say, “Bleah!”

On the other hand: Yeah for electronic distribution!! Bleah for iTunes.

Yeah, there was some major slacker reporting on this article unfortunately. This makes me sad. But old eps on iTunes? This makes me happy. Extremely happy.

I was chekking out a web-site by a chicago streat gang last knight and there was less gramaticle errors on it than this artical. Anyway, did anybody notice this: “convergence’s”? Was this article written in Wisconsin or does “apostrophe s” now signify the plural in other states as well?

  21. Ironic that the commenter talking about spelling mistakes made a spelling mistake himself, lol.

Anyway, despite the grammatical errors, I thought it was a wonderful interview which gave good insight in their beginnings.
